He shook his head. "It happened last October," he said, finding it easier now to remember to keep breathing and keep himself level. They couldn't both go to pieces, because that would solve nothing, and he'd had time to react. Now it was time to play the big brother role like he knew he hadn't in past, but under the circumstances, it was not something he enjoyed doing.
He pressed the heel of his hand to his forehead, trying to keep his facts and timelines straight, to be clinical with the information, though he'd never had to deliver it to family in such a way before. "I found out about it three weeks ago. She's been—she's just been living there, like everything is untouched since that night. It was—" This was the part that choked Derek up the most, the part where he could see how his little sister had been broken, "—the worst thing I've ever seen, Dar. Filthy. She'd just been living there, the whole time, not saying anything. Living with that every—day—of her life."
Derek's voice started to hitch on the last note and he walked away and stood at the window, staring quite unseeingly through the pane. Sometimes he couldn't believe how careless he was with the people who should have been closest to him. "She's been with me since, I just—couldn't tal—" His jaw tensed firmly as he tried to keep himself calm. It was somehow worse reliving it a second time, in this way, than just experiencing it for the first time. "But she's your—so you should know."
