Rookwood Wedding! Open to Guests!
Everything had gone off without a hitch.

Danielle wanted to cry for more than their vows, she was just so elated that the ceremony hadn't been interrupted by someone angry at the both of them, anyone who found it wrong for them to be together. It felt like all these months of turmoil and tears had been pointing towards this day, and Danielle was going to love every second of this day.

Her hands rested behind her back as she listened to her father's story about his wedding day. Danielle rocked on her heels with a smile on her face, so happy that she was going to have stories to share with her family, their future children, and anyone else who was willing to listen. The party was small, just their closest friends and family (Rian had come! He'd come!), and it was just what Danielle had always wanted. The wedding was supposed to be about her and Donovan, it had always been Donovan, and to have her fantasy come true was astounding.

And it wasn't even the felix felicis they had given all of their guests as favors, talking.

She was about to comment on how her father seemed to be getting misty eyed when a hand rested on her waist. Danielle turned and smiled brightly at her husband, and excused herself from her family to pay some attention to him.

"Have I told you how handsome you look today?"

There was something to be said for understated and elegant, Rachel thought as she once more took survey of the décor. She approved, as the quiet, tastefulness suited the bride and groom very well, to her mind. Of course, Rachel had chosen lavish and over-the-top for her own, but it was to make a statement—a very loud one. Naturally, she knew it was also the utmost in style and glamor.

As she allowed her straightened spine to relax ever-so-slightly against the back of her chair, she felt a pang, and was not sure if it was nostalgia or regret, or perhaps both, for the fact that these days were long over for her. Though barely three-and-twenty, she had three children, whom she usually adored and always loved, but it sometimes gave her an uncomfortable flair of panic as she realized how settled her life was, how seemingly secure. There was still that struggle to be grateful for that, to find happiness in that when she'd known so little of complacency, security, and perhaps even happiness before.

What Rachel needed was a brisk shake. Life moved, and one, hopefully, with it. Reminiscing and nostalgia and regrets and all these pangs were silly. Silly, which she was not. With her iron will, Rachel brought her attention to Gabriel, where she thought it had been before her mental wanderings.

"I'm sorry, what was that you said?"

It was a happy day, in his mind. Gabriel had never thought he'd see the day; Donovan Rookwood a married man. Of course, they'd all joked about his best friend and Danielle getting married straight out of Hogwarts, but when she'd decided to go to Columbia, he had thought that was that. Gabriel was a smart man, he knew what his friends wanted and needed in life, and even with Donovan's few years of doubt, he'd always say (and loudly) that he knew it would be him and Danielle.

Of course, he'd never been able to figure out his own life quite as easily, but he was more than happy with what he'd come into. Gabriel smiled across the room as Jonas began to pick up his guitar, as he had promised to serenade the group of friends. His foot was bouncing, honestly excited that this day had finally come, and it was an evening without any worries at all. His mother had the children, Rachel was looking more lovely than ever, and he...

...well, Gabriel had taken a sip of the golden potion the Rookwoods had provided to their few guests. Merlin knew that the lot of them needed some liquid luck these days.

He pushed his chair out from under him, and put his hand out to his wife when she turned. Gabriel grinned his most charming grin, and bowed his head slightly, "I said, dance with me."

She looked at him, startled and perhaps a bit shy. There was no real reason to be, she thought. They had danced before, of course, several times. One would have thought Rachel would have grown accustomed to the activity with her husband, but the truth was that that was one of the times she felt most vulnerable with this man, as if all her secrets, thoughts, desires, even fears, were laid bare for his taking. Yet, somehow, along this mad and puzzling journey they'd taken, she'd gone from fearing Gabriel would never bother with them, to fearing he would, only to exploit them, to slowly, perhaps uneasily, trusting he would handle them with care.

That, in and of itself, terrified and pleased her. Contrary to the very last.

After being whisked to the floor, her hand in his, the other slipped
tentatively on his shoulder, she gave herself a moment to appreciate. The
music, the setting, yes, also the handsome man she was with, that her
children were safe at home... With the smallest of sighs, she settled against
him and smiled in a way she thought covered her hesitancy well. "This is nice."

Gabriel's arm wrapped around Rachel, probably a bit more tightly than was appropriate, and if he wasn't feeling so lucky then he would've sworn he'd get quite the scolding for it. He gazed down at her with a smile, a proud smile at that, and let out his own breath. His life was pretty wonderful right now, he could not deny.

"It is," he agreed, twirling them around a bit, earning some comments from the small crowd. Gabriel's grin widened even more, and he let out a sigh of his own. His wife was the loveliest woman he'd ever laid eyes on, and Gabriel was more than proud to call her his. Why, he should let her know that! "I love you."

They didn't say it very often, or at all, and in the moment Gabriel was really wandering why. He felt his ears heat up in the most pleasant of ways, "You're the first woman I've ever said that to," he admitted, smiling pleasantly, honestly. He liked talking this way with her, he liked catching Rachel off guard, like now with his words---and with the quick dip he dropped her into, holding her securely in his arms. Gabriel moved his face close to hers, "You're the first and the last."

It was difficult, to bite back the protests, the denials, the rejections, that immediately rose up her throat, nearly out her mouth. If she had learned anything in the last year and a half, it was that this man was hers, for better and most certainly for worse. If he'd stood by her side through their vicious fight the summer past and its aftermath, stood by her on the days she was simply the worst version of herself, there was no room for reasonable doubt that he meant what he said.

Never in her life had someone given her that so unconditionally, without reserve, or even expectation, and to her mind, it was a gift with which she risked being extremely careless.

And yet, even after all this time, those three words were the only ones Rachel could never seem to manage to Gabriel. Such a small thing, really. Three syllables, though they meant the world. Over the months, with no small amount of intensely private shame, Rachel learned it was not necessarily that she was afraid she herself would be hurt, but the certainty that she would hurt him. Trying to warn him, trying to make him see reason, had never worked, because he never believed that there was that side of her that deserved to be unloved, that deserved so much of the hurt she'd doled out in the past.

His arm was snug around her waist and though there was comfort in being so close to him, there was also that spike in the beating of her heart, that tingle along her spine that made her the slightest bit uneasy, threw her just off her stride.

Striving for amused, she laughed lightly as he lifted her out of the dip, trailed her fingers ghostingly across the nape of his neck when the two had straightened. "You know I simply don't know what to say when you talk like that."

"Tell me you love me," he said without hesitation, without considering how loaded the words were to come from him and to hear from her. Gabriel was not stupid, he was quite aware that his wife, though he knew it in his heart, had never actually spoken the words to him. There was no need to doubt Rachel's feelings, he felt how she felt and was quite content with how they lived their lives.

No, he had said it, requested it, really, for her. Gabriel knew that she believed him and his words, his feelings, but there was still that guard up around his wife that he couldn't quite break through. Strange, wasn't it? They were married, they had a child together and were raising two others, but he still was not able to convince her that it was okay for her to be in love with him. Or at least, admit out loud to herself and the world that she did. What harm would it do, really? Love only made things better, especially when it was reciprocated as fiercely as Gabriel's love for Rachel was.

The music had stopped, but he hadn't noticed, and Gabriel was an expert at ignoring the cat calls from his best friends. There was no way they'd be able to break his attention now, as he strongly gazed into Rachel's eyes.

He pulled her closer, pressing his forehead to hers so that their lips almost touched as he spoke, "Say it, Rachel, you'll only gain more happiness. I live to make you happy, to love you. Love me."

Rachel bit back a gasp as heard the demand, more impassioned than she could remember him being. When he'd greeted her from Ibiza, it was calculated coolness and tepid relief. When it was Benjamin, it was the absolute devotion to her needs. It was not, had never appeared to her to be, a so-called selfish thing from Gabriel, that he would need to hear these words as much as she needed to never say them; that she could give them to him, and he would derive happiness from it. "I—"

There was that hot sear of panic low in her belly, impossible to ignore. As much as part of Rachel wished to blame him, to cry out that Gabriel had done something to bewitch and ensnare her, he hadn't. Her body, heaven knew, had gone willingly. Her mind, with time, had been won. But it was her heart, that curious and soulful entity, which remained firmly out of grasp. It was a thing bruised more times than she cared to remember, acting purely out of self-defense. Without reason, without rhyme, having stitched itself back together in a senseless pattern with each passing wound. Yet even that most stubborn organ sighed and inched and fell into love when she'd least expected it, hadn't been looking for it.

It was cowardly, undeniably so, but easier to close her eyes and press her face to the crook of his neck, to not see him as she began to lay herself bare as she vowed she never would when he'd taken her to wife.

"I love you," she murmured against his shoulder.

Rian!

When Rian had shown up at her door in a suit and with a bouquet of flowers in his hand, Liz had been too startled to say no to whatever his request was. Thankfully it hadn't been something ridiculous like jumping off a bridge, and was only an invitation to his sister's wedding. Liz had remembered Rian going back and forth about whether or not he wanted to attend the ceremony, but she was glad that he had finally decided to support his sister and family.

It took Liz approximately ten minutes to get dressed and ready. One thing she'd never complain about was how easily manageable her boring straight hair was, and she'd had the dress hanging in her closet for months now, having bought it in a random, trying to make herself feel better but it was utterly pointless, shopping spree. At least she got some use of her money, and hoped that Rian thought she looked nice. Not that---he wasn't her boyfriend, or anything, they just sort of...saw each other. Occasionally. Maybe once or twice a week.

For lunch.

And sometimes dinner.

Whatever it was, Liz hadn't been feeling overwhelmed by it. Things were going remarkably slow, and she was glad for it; though how she hadn't realized that his parents would be at his sister's wedding, she had no idea. Liz felt shy around the close knit group of people and tried her best to just be the happy, supporting guest, but was so glad when Rian had wandered away from the central group so that she could follow him and not feel so awkward.

"See---that wasn't so bad," she said, nudging his arm with hers. Liz looked up at him and smiled, shrugging her shoulders. Everything had been really nice.

There were no words to explain how Donovan felt when he woke up that morning. He was already technically married to Danielle, and he hadn’t had any doubts about whether or not it was the right thing to do, but this whole thing – being married by a priest in front of friends and family, it made it all the more official. Today was the day he was going to be able to call her his wife in front of everyone, instead of hiding it like some dirty, shameful secret. He felt anxious, when he woke up – buzzing with anticipation of seeing her in a white dress, walking towards him down the aisle.

He knew for a fact that his parents would not be there – that thought still broke his heart, but he knew he was going to have Danielle standing there with him, and all his closest of friends would be there to support them both.

He had already taken to loosening the tie he had been wearing – undoing the knot, just to have it drape along the back of his neck, the top 2 buttons of his shirt undone so that he didn’t feel like he was being suffocated. He wore ties all the time, but the best feeling after a long day in court was coming home and taking off the noose that was around his neck.

That and seeing Danielle, of course, though she was often times helping him remove much more than his tie after particularly stressful nights.

He had been speaking with Rafe for a while when he spotted Danielle across the room. She looked so perfect, and she held his attention through whatever Rafe was saying. She seemed to do that a lot – make him lose track of everything that was going on around him, just so he could keep his eyes on her. Eventually, he excused himself to go find his bride. He gave his father-in-law (Christ, that was going to get some getting used to) an appreciative nod, turning to look back at Danielle once he was sure she had her attention. Along with his shirt being loosened around the neck, he had removed his jacket, and had rolled his sleeves to his elbows – overall, he looked a lot more relaxed and happy than he had in the last…well, year.

He smiled down at her.

“Are you trying to sweet talk me, Mrs.Rookwood?”

Merlin, he loved the sound of that.

Danielle tilted her head in teasing manner, feeling her slightly curled hair bounce on her bare shoulders. Everything felt like it had fallen into place, and it was a lovely, lovely feeling. Donovan looked so handsome, even if he was half out of the tuxedo, he looked so handsome. She had tried so very hard to find colors and a scheme that would reflect their personalities and she felt like she'd managed it. Though, really, with how happy she was they could have been wearing potato sacks and she would have thought they looked fabulous.

Mrs. Rookwood. Was that the first time she had been called that? They'd been so quiet these past few weeks, Danielle couldn't recall...it sent tingles up and down her spine and she pushed herself forward, lifting her chin to stare at Donovan with a serene smile on her face.

"Maybe," she let out, taking hold of his hands with both of hers. She didn't want to let him go, she wasn't going to let her go, and part of her wanted to just slip away and take him all to herself. Danielle had to control her urges, and she'd look forward to their honeymoon in the mean time. "But it's true, you've never seemed handsomer."

His fingers laced with hers as she took hold of his hands, and he moved his face close enough to bump her nose with his. He didn’t really care about the compliments he was receiving, seeing how he was too focused on her to really care whether he looked handsome, or like a hot mess. He would just inch forward until his lips were on hers, pressing a soft kiss there. It lingered, and then he kissed her again for good measure before he moved to look down at her.

“Everything went much better than we had anticipated, didn’t it?”

There was a hint of a smirk bordering his words, though it was less because he was amused, but just…thankful. Things could have very easily ended in disaster on their wedding day – the reason they had bound themselves legally before being married in front of their friends and family.

Danielle had figured out at least a hundred and six ways for something to go wrong at the wedding. She even wrote them down, figuring that if she had a list, she would be able to devise a plan to get out of whatever mess anyone threw at them. Why, she'd even tipped the doorman of their dining hall a bit extra to make sure that only their guests came down a certain hallways, not that Donovan needed to know about that or her other preventative ways...

"It was perfect," Danielle said softly, getting lost in his eyes and the close proximity. Would anyone blame them for breaking out into a very intense snogging session right now? She supposed it was something her parents and brother could do without, but it was very hard to resist the urge. Instead her grip on his hands tightened, hoping to convey how much closer she really wanted to be with him.

She let out a happy breath, "Rian came, can you believe it?" she let out softly, still amazed. Her brother hadn't conferred with her about his attendance, but she was so glad he'd shown. Danielle had been worried about her mother coming as well, as her father had really been her only family member that seemed supportive, but her mum had surprised her too.

Rose!

Thomas had decided he'd been to enough weddings in the past week (past two days, actually). Not that both events weren't lovely and entertaining, because they were, but he could do without the romance for quite some time. Though, it was good to see some friends from school that he hadn't in some time; Rose was Danielle's best friend, and she'd nearly clawed him into coming as her guest to the wedding.

"You look very nice," he said for probably the third time, because his head was swirling with the events of the past few days. Thomas was feeling utterly relaxed because of his night with Billie, but he was also feeling strange; he did not know what to do with the situation, or the arrangement, or what it even was! He itched to discuss this with Rose, who was his confidante with most things in his ragingly awkward life, but was worried that she might condone his behavior.

And he didn't particularly want to stop said behavior, so his position was troubling.

Rose smoothed out the napkin, making sure it covered all the fabric of her dress that was on her lap. It was too pretty to ruin, and she had made the firm decision earlier in the night to allow nothing to stop her from having a piece of cake. Call it a pity treat, because she usually ate very healthy, but after experiencing two weddings in two days with no semblance of a boyfriend, Rose felt she deserved it.

Not to say that she was upset or angry with Carys and Drake, or especially Danielle and Donovan. She was elated her best friend had finally married the man she knew she wanted to for years, and simply shocked that Carys had decided to invited her at all. It was good! But she was allowed to feel a little down in the back of her mind. Maybe a little bit jealous. But that was all!

She was just that kind of a person that experienced things later in life than normal. Relationships, career... sometimes she just got so wrapped up in something and then---- Rose blinked, Thomas' voice knocking her out of her own thoughts. Looking up from her hands, she tilted her head to the side. "Thank you," she smiled lightly. "I think we both look very nice, especially concerning we were in a completely different time zone this time yesterday."

Rose turned in her chair, pulling her plate of cake with her on the table to face Thomas better. As she spoke she dug her fork into the dessert. "Did you enjoy Hawaii?"

Juliet!

Rhys was pleased that he and Juliet had decided to attend Donovan's wedding. The trip was providing to be a nice change from their relatively normal monotony that the last few months had been. It was quite strange, actually. He had grown so accustomed to fighting and arguing that Rhys had forgotten it was possible to simply not.

Though, if he was going to be honest, he was starting to feel that this... mood around them was coming to an end. Eh, it had been relaxing while it lasted. Either way, tonight was still a night away from the twins, something always worth celebrating. Will and Anneliese would not doubt enjoy having four small children in their house. Rhys did not pity his friend.

For the past few minutes, Rhys had taken to fiddle with the small bottle of felicis they had received as favors. A rather impressive gift--- and usually Rhys suppressed being impressed purely on spiteful principle. This, he decided, deserved it.

Turning to Juliet, he let the bottle go limp in his hands. "What do you think we should do with these?" he asked, genuinely curious. Juliet had always been better at making snap decisions about things, even if it wasn't necessary. He supposed they could save them for the twins for when they were older, but... Rhys had a feeling they wouldn't need a great amount of luck in their lives to get what they wanted.

It was true that this---normalcy, or whatever you wanted to call it, since for the Notts it was certainly not normal--had been a somewhat relaxing change after the high-level disruption in her lives which had been Rhys running back to England, messing around with some floozy (or whatever, Juliet really didn't care to know what had happened--), and her having to chase him down and drag him back. After such an annoyingly traumatic experience as it had been to realize that she did indeed have a difficult time of it living in the long-term without his presence, for things to just somehow go to a period of getting along was more than acceptable.

Well, sort of. As low-stress as not consistently screaming at one another was, it was still a rather strange feeling. It felt precarious, even on a carefree night such as tonight when they were simply attending the wedding of a Hogwarts friend, not having to deal with either of their nearly two-year-old "bundles of joy" for an entire night.

Of course, it would be a ridiculous notion to admit to insecurity. --No, Juliet didn't like that word. To keep their lives described as 'precarious' was a much less stupid way of putting it.

Rhys's question reached her ears just as she was coming out of her own train of thought, and her hands in her lap unfolded to reveal her own tiny vial of the mixture to which he referred. Pursing her lips lightly in thought, she immediately thought 'to make sure the twins don't catch the house on fire', but that---mmm, no. No, the twins were something that she didn't feel inclined to think about for the night anyway. Too often lately had she been far too (silently) freaked out about the idea of them being toddlers already to think about them any more than was entirely necessary.

"I suppose we could use them to take down the French government, burn the country to the ground, and get away with it," she stated, not entirely certain herself how serious she was. "But as extravagant a gift as this is, I hardly doubt we need luck to be good at anything."
