Donovan Rookwood ([info]impulse) wrote in [info]valesco,
Donovan didn’t know how he hadn’t lost his mind by now. When it wasn’t one thing trying to destroy whatever shred of happiness he and Danielle had, it was another, and every time he thought it was all over, he was proven wrong. He thought they were in a good place for a while – they were married, they had their own lives and they didn’t have to worry about his family ever trying to tear them apart again, and now they were expecting a child.

He should have known. He should have just known that something terrible was going to happen, because it was like clock work - for every 2 steps forward he and Danielle took towards living a normal live, someone had to push them three steps back. What was worse was that he had to be strong for his wife – when he had been removed from his family tree for loving her, for being labeled as a Death Eater because he had been loyal to his family, only to get thrown to the lions, when neither one of his parents showed up at their wedding, he tried so hard to not let Danielle see what a broken mess he was. She knew, of course, and she was the only one who could truly console him when he was barely able to work through it.

For the longest time, her leaving was the worst thing that had ever happened to him. He wouldn’t have been able to survive if he lost her forever. Even Gabriel wouldn’t have been able to pull him out of that deep a pit of misery. The thought kept plaguing his thoughts as he stared at that wall, trying to juggle all of the ‘what ifs’ with thoughts of how he was going to make whoever did this pay for almost bringing him to the point of being inconsolable – for almost breaking him into pieces small enough to fit through the eye of a needle.

Danielle was his lifeline. Danielle was his world. If she had died, he would have died right along with her. The only difference is he still would have had a pulse.

When the healer finally approached the two men who were waiting, Donovan couldn’t even find the energy to stand up when it became clear that they still couldn’t go in to see their wives. He looked away when the healer told Gabriel what had happened to Rachel, guilt turning his stomach like acid, eating away at him from the inside. Steely blue eyes did turn up when the baby was mentioned, knowing that he was now talking to him. For the first time, he felt some relief, but it was short lived after he found out what Danielle had been through. His lips parted, his mouth feeling dry. Even if he wanted to say something, he couldn’t. His heart was pounding, his head felt light, and sound seemed muffled, even as Gabriel started speaking to him.

Again, Donovan would swallow, his jaw tightening as he turned to look at his friend, never having seen him like this before. He had every right to be angry. Donovan was just as angry, if not more so, but his was a silent rage – the kind that, when it finally boiled over, made grown men cower due to his wrath. He was angry at whoever they were, he was angry at himself, he was angry at his parents, his brother, his society. It was too much for one man to handle.

“We are going to cause them unimaginable pain…and we are going to make them suffer. That’s a fucking promise.”
