gabriel l. corner ([info]coverstory) wrote in [info]valesco,
That surprised him. Gabriel couldn't stop himself from turning to face Rachel, and he most definitely couldn't stop the smile the slowly slid on his face because of the comment. That was---different. It was positive, it was optimistic, it was certainly out of character for Rachel. Maybe it had to do with the traumatic event the two women shared, but it was one thing for Rachel to have such thoughts. To voice them was something entirely different, and Gabriel appreciated it. It felt like an improvement of their daily conversations, a bit like going back to the near-gossip-like ways before the accident.

"They are good for each other," Gabriel agreed, continuing to watch Rachel, hoping to catch another flicker of this positive shift in deposition. She looked simply beautiful, ravishing, and he'd wished to tell her so before the left for the ceremony but all he had managed was a smile before he put out his arm for her. If he had managed any more it may have pushed things into an area of discomfort, and the whole night would have been ruined before it began. Gabriel managed to peel his eyes off of her bare shoulders to stare down at his hands, "Complications aside."

He felt like such a fool whenever he had to avert his gaze from her. Rachel was his wife! He knew that she didn't exactly recall her time as his wife, which the logical part of him accepted and understood, but it was a pain, literally and physically, to know that he wasn't...allowed to touch her like he wished. Like a husband should touch his wife. It was upsetting. It was infuriating.

"Would you care to dance?" Gabriel said, standing before he could think, putting his hand out to Rachel. He couldn't bear an entire evening sitting here beside her in a miserable state, but it would be even worse to wander around the room and put distance between himself and her. A dance could solve a few problems he was facing.
