She still couldn't believe it.
No matter how many hours Lily sat around and mulled over the terrible reality of what had just happened, she still couldn't believe it. She couldn't fathom how someone she had just talked to less than a day ago, someone she had been friends with for years (well, there had been that one rough spot, but--), someone she had loved like a sister, could just be gone. But even though she was in such a state of disbelief, Lily was still furious. Livid, raging mad, whatever you wanted to call this emotion that had her clenching and unclenching her fists every minute or so, imagining they were around Travers' sorry neck.
She had been at the Order house for a long while now, sitting in the same chair in the kitchen and just---being silent. Thinking. What else was she supposed to do? There was nothing that she, or anyone, could do for Marlene and her family now. The helplessness had to be the worst feeling in the world, because Lily---Lily was a doer. If there was a problem, she got up and did something to fix it, make it right again---but this, this she could do nothing to fix. This was a friend, a fellow Order member, who had been slaughtered without being given a chance, this was Marlie---
Just barely resisting a frustrated yell, Lily very suddenly shot up out of her chair and began to pace in the kitchen, ignoring the stiffness in her limbs. She had to get up and move, she had to do something, make herself feel like she wasn't as completely fucking useless as she knew she was at the moment.
She brought her head up for a moment to look up at the rest of the Order that was assembled there, but her eyes went instantly to James. Sitting there and just... sitting there, really, that was all. Miserable, he looked more miserable than most of the others there, which was no easy feat. Lily stopped and watched him stare at the ground a good few minutes, and felt her heart wrench; he and Marlie had been closer than she and Marlie many days.
She hesitated for just a second before forcing her feet to move, cross the distance between them, and without invitation Lily sat down next to her husband. She opened her mouth to say something, but realized quickly that she had no idea what to tell him, and closed it again. Instead, she reached out found his hand, squeezing it tightly for a brief moment.
