The murder itself had been quick. Smith wasted no time when they got back to Shadow Falls. He hunted Elijah's step father down and he killed him, plain and simple. He hadn't deigned to drink the man's blood, but strangled him to death and tossed him into the lake to sink and rot. It had been nothing more than an extermination. He hadn't tortured the man, and he hadn't given him much of an explanation for why he was dying except that he deserved it and he owed Elijah a peaceful existence.

Then, he'd turned himself in. All of this happened before Whitney could do anything to stop him. Smith had been very careful about that aspect because the whole point of this was to protect both of the people he loved. Elijah from his step father and Whitney from the Council. After pleading his case, he was sentenced to six months in the dungeons. But he'd been granted the small mercy to leave a letter for Whitney and Elijah to be delivered after he was incarcerated.

It read: Whitney and Lij. Please don't be mad. I'm not running from either of you. 6 months and we can go back to normal. 6 months and all of us will be safe again. Let me do this. -Smith

Not much of a poet, but he got the point across. That was 6 months ago and now he was collecting his watch from the guard and heading home. There was scars on his back from where he'd been punished. Only very talented vampires knew how to hurt another vampire enough to leave scars. They were faint though and in another fifty years they'd be gone. No injury lasted forever, except maybe emotional ones.

As was common, the exact date of his release hadn't been publicized. So he walked himself home to Whitney's, terrified that Elijah (or maybe even Whitney himself) wouldn't be there. Instead of walking right in, he knocked before trying the door to see if it was unlocked.

The first three months, Whitney had been livid. Here he was, stuck with babysitting a claim he didn't even really want to take in the first place, but had only to get back at Smith - and now Smith wasn't even going to be around. A part of him wanted to unclaim Elijah, but he knew that if he did that, Smith wouldn't forgive him for a long time. So he kept Lijah around, and it proved to be a good thing because after the anger wore off, Whit was mostly lonely. Spending time with Elijah had gotten easier, which was saying a lot because Smith had always been the common thread between them. They weren't as close as they would be with Smith around, but they had formed a bond and that was a good thing.

Whit and Lijah both knew today was the day for Smith's release. They'd practically been counting down the day, though Whit did it inwardly. Lijah did it outloud. Elijah had fallen asleep on the couch, so it was Whitney who rose to his feet when he heard the knock on the door and the turn of the knob. He came out of the study where he'd been reading and down the foyer, and when he saw Smith he leaned against the wall for a moment.

"We were suppose to do this together," he pointed out.

He'd barely gotten back into Whitney's good graces and then he pulled something like this. He supposed he should have expected to be greeted with something like that.

"And then both of us would have been thrown in the dungeon and all three of us would have been even more miserable. Elijah would have had no one. He needed you." Smith glanced down at his clothes. He desperately needed a shower. "Besides, you couldn't have handled the dungeons. I'm pretty sure that they don't disinfect anything down there."

Whitney gave Smith an amused look. He was still upset, but he'd come to terms with the situation months ago so his reaction wasn't nearly as bad as it would have been in the beginning if he'd seen Smith. He pushed away from the wall and went over to close the door behind Smith, then he reached over to tug the other vampire towards him for a soft kiss.

"Lets get in the shower, then we'll wake Lijah. You need something fresh after all of those blood bags, I'm sure," he said quietly before he pulled away and led he way upstairs.

He was aware that Smith had only been fed the minimum amount of food, and he could tell by the way the other vampire looked.

He'd been very close to tearing into the first human he saw on the way home. Unfortunately, there hadn't been any foolish enough to be out on the streets at this hour. He didn't want Elijah to see him like this, wasted away, but he didn't have a choice.

"You promise to stop me before I go too far?" Smith was fairly young by vampire standards and he could still fall prey to bloodlust. He wasn't positive that he could control himself around Elijah right now.

Following Whitney into the bathroom, he paused, trying to process the fact that Whitney was being welcoming. "You forgive me then?"

"Yes," Whitney said simply, leaving it at that and deciding not to go into depth about it. Right now, he was just glad to have Smith back and he wasn't going to ruin it by being sulky or pointing out the things he felt Smith had done wrong. It was over, there wasn't a thing he could do about it. "And yes, I'll stop you before you go too far," he added as he opened the glass door to the shower and turned the hot water on. "I'll get you something clean to wear."

Smith visibly relaxed as soon as Whitney said yes. He wanted to act like he didn't care one way or the other, but at this point, he'd been so desperate to just see the man that he could not handle his rejection now.

"No," he said as Whitney started to leave to get clothes. "No, you can do that after. Come here." He didn't care about clean clothes right now. He just wanted Whitney in the shower with him. "Please?" Sometimes, even the smallest inch that Whitney gave him on some arguments was enough to make Smith go needy and soft. Now was one of those times. It was really starting to hit him that he was home.

Usually when Smith got needy and whiney, Whitney would tease him relentlessly. But not tonight. He'd missed Smith just as much as Smith had missed him, so instead of being snarky or throwing out a jab Whitney slipped out of his clothes and moved to climb into the shower with the other vampire. He stepped forward and wrapped Smith up, allowing one hand to slip up into the other's hair.

"You need your hair washed," he said softly, but instead of getting the shampoo he just tipped Smith's head back and brushed a kiss against the front of the other vampire's throat.

Always thankful for the snarky comments to snap him out of sentimentality, Smith was equally as thankful right now for the exception to the rule.

He didn't let Whitney kiss his throat for long because he needed something to do with his own mouth. Dipping down, he caught Whitney in a kiss, this one nothing like the last one. It was rough and demanding before he broke and laughed a little. "You know, they hosed me off before I left. But I suppose that's not up to your standards." He could still feel the lingering filth in his hair and he was convinced it would never come out.

Whitney welcomed the kiss because he needed it just as much as Smith did. He kissed back just as hard, a mix of teeth and tongue in the kiss, and when Smith broke it he kept a tight hold on the other vampire.

"Definitely not," he agreed softly before he reached over to get some shampoo so that he could work it into Smith's hair. "What did you do to him?" he asked after a moment, meaning Elijah's stepfather.

Letting Whitney lather up his hair, he closed his eyes to enjoy the feel of someone touching him in a kind way. He'd mostly kept his back to the shower wall, subconsciously hiding the marks on his skin. Never before had he needed or wanted to hide injuries--though normally his injuries only lasted a week or two.

"I choked him. Tossed him in the lake. Told him he owed Elijah this much." To die. "I didn't tell him my name, or really even talk to him. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to stop hurting him if I talked to him."

Whitney didn't say anything to that, instead he just helped Smith rinse his hair and then he got the soap to lather the man up. He was gentle, careful, as if Smith might break. He'd never been so careful with the other vampire before, not even when Smith was human.

"I wish you would have told me what you were planning, but I guess we both know that if you had, I wouldn't have let you do it."

It felt strange to be handled so delicately. He wondered if this was how he touched Lijah sometimes and he just didn't realize it. Dipping his head back so that the water could run through the lather and carry it away, Smith stared up at the ceiling.

"I was too easy on him." He had gone back and forth in the dungeons on that subject. Had he lost the opportunity for revenge? He didn't think Elijah would be pleased if he'd tortured someone, even someone who deserved it. Ultimately, he'd let Elijah's sweetness be his guide. The boy wasn't a vengeful person.

"You would have somehow taken the blame. You're my maker. I couldn't have the council thinking you were ultimately responsible for this. Elijah would have been alone and you would have been hurt. Not to mention, you can't keep your mouth shut. They probably would have killed you in there."

"I can keep my mouth shut," Whitney reasoned, though there was a faint smile on his lips as he dipped his head down to press his mouth against the front of Smith's throat. "Just not around you," he added honestly, his voice a quiet mumble.

He pulled back and grabbed the conditioner to start working that into Smith's hair next, and he took his time to massage the other's scalp as they stood there together in the steam of the shower. He liked that Smith was shorter than him, and he always had.

"Elijah will be happy to see you. He used your pillow as a replacement until it stopped smelling like you, now it just smells like him," he added quietly.

Smith had always been the two-in-one shampoo/conditioner sort. Whitney, of course, tended to prefer a lengthier approach and the feel of the conditioner being massaged through his hair made him laugh a little. "It's gotta be soft and fluffy, doesn't it. Forget manly hair." He teased.

The mention of Elijah made Smith tense ever so slightly. He'd abandoned the kid yet again and it sounded like he was still devoted. At least this time he'd abandoned him for a good cause and not just fear. "You two got along?"

"It probably needs conditioning after six months of being in that place," Whitney reasoned, and the funny thing was that he was being completely serious.

He went quiet after that, feeling the way Smith tensed when he'd mentioned Elijah. Six months ago, Whit wouldn't have understood why the kid had such a hold on Smith. Now, he understood a little bit better.

"We did," he said with a nod. "The first month you were gone, I avoided him. The second month, he avoided me. The third month, we avoided eachother. By the fourth, things seemed to come together a little bit more," he added as he started the process of rinsing Smith's hair again.

"He's ours." He reiterated the desire for that dynamic. He wanted Whitney to see what he saw in Elijah. The idea that they may be getting closer to that made a thrill run through his body that he couldn't hide with a stoic demeanor. Maybe that had been part of the plan too, the absence of Smith contributing to a closeness between the other two.

When his hair was squeaky clean and conditioned, he had to admit that he felt relieved. He reached down to turn the water off and shook the water out of his hair as he reached for a towel.

Ours. Whitney still wasn't entirely sure about that, at least not yet, but he was starting to see how it could become that. How they could get there, especially now.

Once the water was off, he reached for a towel as well to dry himself off. He slung it around his waist, and it rode low as he slipped out of the bathroom to go and fetch some pajama pants for them both to wear. When he reappeared, he was all ready wearing his and the towel went into the hamper as he handed Smith a pair of pajama pants of his own.

"He got really sick for a few weeks, some sort of virus, I took care of him," he said after a moment, his expression not really giving much away. "I just kept thinking - if this kid dies while Smith is gone he'll never forgive me for it. I guess knowing he means so much to you makes him mean something to me."

Smith had dried off and his towel was--predictably--on the floor by the hamper instead of inside of it. Tugging on the pants, he considered what Whitney told him. "That's saying a lot, actually. Time apart makes us sentimental." He smirked, though he liked hearing that very much.

"We're going to have to have very rough and unforgiving sex soon just so that both of us can save face."

Whitney was listening to Smith, but his eyes very slowly started to trickle down to focus on the towel on the floor as if he'd just spotted a spider. He pursed his lips together before he bent over to snatch it up, and once it was in the hamper he reached out to grab Smith's hand to tug him forward, and he dipped his head down to kiss him.

"Yes we will," he agreed, "But you need to eat something, you're all boney."

Glancing down at his waifish physique and groaned to think of how long it would take to get himself back to fighting weight. He'd go nuts if he couldn't get back in the ring soon. He'd be at the gym tomorrow. In the dungeons, it was nearly impossible to work out or train given the fact that he'd spent most of his time healing and just trying to stay upright.

Food meant Elijah and as he headed to the boy's room, he was thankful that he'd had a shower. He smelled much better now. "I should have lied and said it was an accident," Smith laughed a little. People got off easier for an accident. Slipping into Lijah's room, he scanned it for signs of the boy, still holding on to Whitney's hand, hald afraid he would just maul the kid, rip him to pieces. It was like offering a starving man his favorite food and expecting him to be delicate about it.

Elijah was curled up in the bed, which was much too big for his small frame, but Whitney was extravagent when he built pieces. He kept a hold of Smith's hand and gently nudged him on the door to go to the edge of the bed. Lijah stirred and rolled over to open his eyes, blinking against the small bit of light flooding into his room.

"Smith?" he called out softly before he pushed himself up to reach for the vampire.

During his many hours of alone time, he thought a lot about how Elijah would receive him. He had, after all, murdered a family member. Even if the man had tortured the boy, was there still a strange bond? He hoped not.

When Lijah reached for him, he took his hand and drew him up against him. His scent was profoundly intoxicating and he immediately pressed his nose to Elijah's throat. He wanted to rip it open and take all of what was inside.

Whitney stuck close by, and he moved to stand behind Smith as he sat down on the edge of the bed. Elijah easily sank against Smith, arms winding around the vampire as he pressed his face against his chest. He had no shirt on, and Lijah could feel how cool his skin was.

"Missed you," he said softly, his arms tightening a bit. "You're colder than usual."

"Are you sure you missed me? You know why I had to go away, right? Whitney told you?" Or somebody told him, anyone. Smith's body tensed, worried that Elijah would say he knew nothing about his step father.

"I'm cold because I'm starving. They don't feed you anything worth shit in that place. I need--" his voice drifted off, not wanting to ask out right.

"Whitney told me," Elijah said quietly as he held onto Smith even tighter. He squeezed his eyes shut and let out a quiet little sigh. "Still missed you," he added.

Yes, he didn't like the idea that Smith had killed someone, but his stepfather was a very awful person. Lijah didn't want to have to be terrified of him his entire life, and now he didn't have to be. He was thankful for that, even if the circumstances were messed up.

Pulling back, he swallowed hard as he looked at Smith, and he knew that the vampire needed to feed. He leaned in to press a soft kiss to Smith's lips, and Whitney sat down behind Smith.

"It's okay," Lijah said softly, "Go ahead."
