Her mom always worried about her eating too much candy. Her father liked to say it was because Althea's grandfather had been a dentist and her mother was just trying to make sure she grew up as miserable as she was and snuck his daughter bags of M & Ms and packets of Reese Cups whenever possible. Her mom just told her that her smile was important because it was the first thing people saw. Althea honestly didn't see the point of worrying about her teeth when she was seven. She had lost two already.

The candy was almost always in her mother's purse, something she had been told not to go snooping around in unless someone specifically said so, but she was out shopping so Althea didn't see the harm. Candy deprived in her early years or not, her mother had a sweet tooth now and always kept something handy. Lifesavers weren't her favorite, (her mother usually stuck to chocolate) but she could hardly afford to be picky. She tore some paper of the already opened roll and knew she had to be careful. If she took more than the one already in her hand, she would have to tear off more and that would be a dead giveaway.

It was butter rum flavored and stuck to her teeth one it had gotten had gotten thin enough to bite. She stuck a finger in her mouth, trying to get a bit of it off one her mother came in, plastic K Mart bags in hand just in time to see the torn off bits of wrapper (and her purse) in her daughter's lap.

"Thea!" she scolded. "Have you been eating candy?"

"Dad said I could have some?" she offered with what she hoped was an innocent smile and a shrug.

After that Jenna started hiding things in the glove compartment of her car. Her daughter figured that out a couple weeks later.

Everyone told her that she would miss suburbia once she got to New York, but she's never looked back. She still needs absolute silence when she's working. The only sound she needs or wants to her is her guitar as selfish as that might be. There's too much going on in her head at any given moment, but at the end of a busy day there's only one thing that can calm her down.

She usually makes a cup of tea first, peppermint or vanilla before slipping into her most comfortable pajama pants (the ones covered in snowmen that she really should only be wearing during the winter months) and heads out onto her balcony. It needs a new chair. The green striped cushion on hers is missing a button and the stuffing has settled into a permanent lump, but it hardly seems to matter after a while. The city's even noisier than any number of scattered thoughts in her brain. The couple down the street screaming at each other have problems that seem much more complicated than hers, drowning them out completely.

It's a strange little symphony that's always been comforting because on some level, even back home, organized chaos is all she's ever known.

I really love this, I feel like it said a lot about her. The imagery in this is beautiful, I could really sense how at peace she was, despite being in the middle of the cacophony that's New York City!

Althea was starting to wonder if she was the ultimate cliche. New York was full of artists, dancers, singers, actors who swore they were just biding their time waiting tables because they had bills to pay. Then something that was supposed to be a temporary thing became your life, your career if you were too proud to pack up, head home and admit that you had failed.

She had been working at Carmella's for about six months now and was already a pro at scooping gelato for tourists who barely even looked her in the eye. Last week she thought about going to back to school, kicking herself for leaving when she only had a few years left until she remembered her scholarship had walked out the door when she had.

There were no pity parties today. Okay, so maybe a gig at a crappy bar that held about ten people wasn't Madison Square Garden, but it was something. She had a show. A light at the end of this dreary tunnel of a day. Or she would if time stopped playing tricks on her.

"Hey, Jamie. What time is it?!" she asked eagerly once her customer, a skinny blonde with dreadlocks shoved a straw in her iced latte and headed out.

"5:37. And for those of you playing the home game, that's exactly seven minutes after the last time you asked," he said dryly.

"Sorry," she said with a sheepish smile even though she was sure it had to be later. "Hey, are you coming to my show?"

Her coworker shook his head but there was a smile on his face. "Sure. But first I'm buying you your own watch."

Okay, doing virgin because I've been meaning to do this in narrative form but everyone's written a first time narrative so....

It hurts, but no more than she expected. When it's all over neither of them says anything, though a little voice in the back of her mind is screaming that he could totally tell that she didn't know what she was doing. When he falls asleep, she can't help but feel a little relieved.

She can't help but stare either.

Conor's more beautiful than handsome. He's also the resident manwhore on campus Tall, with pale skin scattered with freckles and cheekbones that even Bowie would envy. His lips were softer than she expected, pouty, girly even. And that stupid voice in the back of her mind kicks in again.

Of course he's androgynous. Of course she chose someone who wants nothing more than exactly what just happened after a few too many beers.

When he doesn't call, she doesn't mind. Seeing him around another girl a few weeks later stings, but only because she hears him whispering the same things in her ear that he whispered into hers. Didn't she even warrant some new material?

She doesn't feel different. Not at all. She feels nothing and that's even worse.
