Shop Until Somebody Drops (Hopefully Not Me)
There were, Stevie Barton reflected, any number of better things she could be doing today.  Working on her hot rod, for one.  William Blake, for another.  Dirt biking for a third.  But Marie Claire Pym (otherwise known as MC, but only to Stevie) has asked her to go shopping with her today and had reminded Stevie that "One does not refuse Marie Claire Pym."  It was a shared joke between the two.

...At least, Stevie assumed she was joking.

Though the daughter of the famous and wealthy Antonia Stark, Stevie did not usually venture out to malls.  Or at least, not the upscale kind that MC preferred.  The one downtown with the biker apparel store was just fine by her.  But she endured.  And she had managed to let MC talk her into buying a few things.

"We've been at this for three hours," she told MC.  "Our next stop is either the food court, or I'm picking you up and carrying you out of here."

Marie Claire was in the process of matching bras to the twenty separate pair of Cosabella thong underwear that she'd bought when Stevie voiced her complaint.

"Has it already been three hours? Huh. And we still haven't hit the shoe department. You're starving?"

"We were here when the mall opened," Stevie informed her. "And yes, I'm starving. All I've had to eat today is a powerbar and coffee."

Dramatic sigh.

"Fine. I suppose I can always come back. What do you want to eat, Starvin' Marvin?"

Victory!

Three chili-cheese dogs for Stevie, two for MC, a couple of orders of onion rings, root beer for Stevie, MC's drink of choice for her, it was a good, if messy lunch they had going.

"So, ballpark, how much do you think you've spent today?"

"Probably at least five grand and once we get to the cosmetics department I'll drop at least three more. It's a light shopping day for me." Even if lunch should have been messy (which it probably was for Stevie) Marie Claire was doing a really good job of being neat about how she was eating. Exceptionally so.

Stevie had used up a considerable number of napkins by this point. But then again, it wasn't good food unless it made a mess.

"...I should really say something about that, but given what I spend on car parts, I'm not sure I've got any room to judge."

"I actually have a list of what you've spent on a spreadsheet if you ever want to play that game with me, punk." MC grinned. She was cute indeed, but she also had quite the brain in her head.

"Doesn't make you less of a weirdo. Hey, don't get all bummed out about you and your mom not having a huge common ground. It's cool. My mom gets all weird when I'm in Dad's lab."

Considering Stevie was occasionally sure the fights over her and her future had been one of the major factors in her parent's divorce, well, it made her already tricky relationship with her mother even trickier. Having some kind of common ground was a good thing.

"Heh. Never did count on two mega brains, did she?"

"Actually I think she did. I just don't think she knew what that would mean for her. Dad didn't either, for that matter."

MC's parents were perfect for each other and there had never been any doubt. Once they'd gotten together it was a done deal, which had made her an anomaly amongst her friends. She was okay with that, though.

"Well, seeing as how I can't figure you out either sometimes, maybe we all ought to start a club," Stevie said, jokingly.

"Think the only person who does have you figured out is Mike."

Stevie laughed. "Sorry, yeah. Too busy having no strings attached sex here. I keep forgetting people like relationships."

She was probably joking. Mostly.

"You want me to drop some hints around him?"
