Who: Tatum and Sera.
When: Morning of December 24th (Christmas Eve), after Tatum comes out to their father.
Where: Donnelly-Rousseau residence. Portage Lake, Maine.
What: Tatum comes home to pack her stuff, she’s freaking out, Sera freaks out too.
Rating: Probably some swearing but otherwise SFW.

When Sera woke up that morning it seemed like any other Christmas Eve really. She had naturally been done her shopping weeks ahead of time, and all her wrapping was done too. Unlike Tatum, who was constantly scrambling to do everything last minute. Which Sera never really understood, when at least her sister could do magic outside of school now. She still had a few more weeks to go herself.

She spent the morning helping to clean up the living room and kitchen, and organizing presents under the Christmas tree while Madeline ran into the office for a few hours. Tatum and their dad had been home in the morning but had headed into town.

Not too long after they left and with everything done downstairs for the big night ahead, she retreated upstairs to her room to curl up with a good book. She wasn’t sure if Rath was home or not, but if he was it didn’t really matter to her. He was probably asleep and as best as she could hear the house was completely quiet. Piling up a few pillows against the headboard of her bed, she propped her self upright and settled into her book, shimmying down a bit on the pillows to let herself get comfy.

When Sera heard Tatum rip through the hall and into her room a few minutes later, she knew something was up, even before she heard her sister's door slam. It shook through the silence of the house and the brunette instinctively jumped up, dropping her book onto the bed next to her. She took a few quick steps towards her own door. She might have thought she was being robbed or something if she had not heard Tatum mumbling to herself and fumbling around somewhere.

As far as she knew Tatum was supposed to be in town for hours, and checking her watch she realized not much time had passed at all. They would have been lucky to even make it to Portland in that time, it wasn’t exactly a short drive on a good day and it was Christmas eve. She took a few steps back to her bedroom window and peered out. Maybe they just forgot something and turned around to grab it? Maybe Tatum was just in a hurry.. but their father’s squad car was no where in sight.

Tatum, from what she could hear over all the banging and crashing around coming from her room, didn’t seem like she was in a very good mood. Whatever her reason was for being home so early was. She made her way into the hall and walked a bit closer to Tatum’s door, carefully listening. Maybe dad finally busted her for weed or something?

She stopped just a few feet from her sister's door. If Tatum was upset, she’d probably only make it worse. Maybe now really wasn’t the best time to nag her. She was just about to turn back around and go back to her book when among the noises coming from Tatum’s room, she heard what she knew had to be crying.

Getting to Tatum’s door, she did something she normally wouldn’t have done at home and reached out to knock. She knew how much it drove her sister crazy when she just barged in. Waiting for a few seconds with no answer, she knocked again. She knew she was in there, she could hear her. Tatum either couldn’t hear her over the racket she was making or was just ignoring her. She wasn’t sure which but figured it was probably the latter. She knocked yet again this time just a bit louder.

After another knock, she spoke up, just loud enough so she knew Tatum could definitely hear her. "Hey! are you alright in there?" she asked kind of apprehensively. She was sure she could still hear her crying. If she didn’t answer this time she was just busting in, there was nothing else to it.

Tatum didn't even know how she got back to the house. She had walked and walked and walked along the highway for almost twenty minutes, just crying on and off and occasionally cursing herself for not having a single joint with her. She had eventually given up and apparated right home, standing in the end of the driveway and just staring up at the house. Her dad always put the exact same Christmas lights up on their front step, the same lights in the tree in their yard, his favorite nativity scene too. They flashed obnoxiously even in day light, left on from the night before, and the redhead pulled the extension cord out of the side of the house on her way by once she had willed her legs to move again. Their dad was always getting pissed at them for leaving lights on, even if those ones were his fault. Outside lights were his jurisdiction. It was just automatic to her, the simple motion. It could be the last time she got to do something as simple as turn off the lights in her own house. Everything had to count, she had to remember it all.

She had been glad to see Madeline wasn't home, and that the house was silent as she entered. It was still kind of early, and the only sound seemed to be a dripping tap and the gentle hum of the furnace downstairs. That was better, actually. She had half been expecting to return home and have her step-mother waiting for her, to kick her out even faster. Madeline would probably wanted to kill her for dragging Sera into this by-proxy. Whatever bad things happened to her, it was just a matter of time before Sera was next and they'd all have to realize that now. There was no underestimating her father's stance any longer. He wouldn't tolerate it for one daughter, and Tatum had doubts he would ever give Sera a free pass over this trouble either. They were both screwed, but at least Sera could still hide. Why had she opened her big fat mouth? She was always blurting everything out at the wrong time.

With the house seemingly empty, or at least otherwise occupied, Tatum had been hoping for a quick and painless escape. She didn't know when her father would be home, or when her step-mother would be, and avoiding confrontation was a must. Rath was probably still asleep, early as it was, and this was the last thing she needed to wake him up with. He needed to stay with Sera, and Sera had to stay put. She had already decided that. There was no way she was going to let all three of them lose their parents over her dumb mistake. Why had she felt the need to come clean, to be honest? Living a lie wasn't pleasant, especially a lie you had to keep up everyday, but the life before had been the real lie. She just wanted to be herself and be loved for that, but it was obviously a bit much to ask for.

She had plans to be quiet, silent even, but between the panic and the upset, she sounded more like a pack of elephants trudging up the stairs. Reaching her room, she barely got the door slammed before she began letting herself cry all over again. Her cheeks were cold and rosy, and the warm tears felt tingling slipping down them, but she quickly swiped at her eyes with her sleeve while she worked. What did she pack? There was so much, her entire life packed into her bedroom. She had never left home for long before, other than going away to school. Her whole being was in the room, shelves and drawers and a closet all full of her junk. Under her bed, in her desk, there was all sorts of things she wanted to pack but what took priority? She just started crying harder as she tried to decide.

She honestly didn't hear the first knock, as she was down on her hands and knees in the closet, trying to find a backpack she wanted to take. She'd put an extension charm on it, just a little one, enough to get some stuff back to school. She could probably sneak back later days, if she was absolutely positive Mick was out, to gradually get the rest. Her siblings would help her, she figured, but she wasn't sure it was worth the trouble they might get in to do so. She was on the outs now, after all, the family pariah. She had a feeling that staying away from the whole family was an unwritten rule to being kicked out. No one was going to be able to help her, or at least not openly.

Finally hauling out the bag that she wanted, she tensed up when she heard the second louder knock and her sister's voice outside. Speak of the devil, she thought, quickly trying to stop herself from sobbing so hard. Crying in front of Sera was the worst. "I-I'm fine," she lied, sniffling a bit and just sitting on the floor, staring toward the door. She knew the brunette would let herself in to investigate, and that was good. She wasn't sure she had to energy to get up and let her in. "C-Come here, we s-should like.. t-talk for a s-second."

Sera was already standing with her hand on the door ready to let herself in. She hadn’t been expecting Tatum to answer, not at all really. Especially once she spoke, and Tatum knew for sure it was her. She thought she’d be the last person in the world her sister would want to talk to, especially as upset as she sounded. They weren’t exactly the type of sisters to share their feelings, at least not with each other. Sera was pretty sure it had been at least a couple years since she’d last seen Tatum cry, probably not since Frankie had died.

When Tatum finally started to speak, Sera had expected things to go a whole lot worse. She'd been expecting to be told to 'go the fuck away' or something, so when Tatum actually told her to come in, it kind of caught her off guard. She almost thought she must have misheard her. Something definitely had to be wrong. If Tatum wanted to seriously talk, it had to be something bad.

She hesitated outside for just a moment, bracing herself to deal with whatever had Tatum so worked up. She pushed the door open and looked around. It took her a moment to spot Tatum, until her eyes glanced the room and made it to the closet. Tatum didn’t seem to be crying anymore, at least as much as she had been but it was clear she had been. She would have known by looking at her, even if she hadn’t already heard her from the hall. As first she wasn’t really sure what to say, or how to start. Tatum didn’t seem ready to burst right out with it, not that Sera had expected it her to.

"Um.. I just wanted to know if you’re okay? What do you wanna talk about?" she hesitated for another for seconds, just kind of looking at Tatum. She wasn’t exactly sure what to do, she couldn’t just treat Tatum how she normally would have, it’d just make the whole situation much worse. She looked at Tatum’s desk chair, considered sitting, but walked past instead and took a seat next to Tatum on the floor.

"Seriously, what’s wrong?" she asked suddenly, noticing the bag in Tatum’s hand and the few things she’d already stuffed partially inside. She couldn’t help but wince a bit at the mess of it all but kept her feelings to herself. Now probably wasn't the best time to pick on Tatum's terrible packing habits.

When Sera initially entered the room, Tatum didn't know if she was going to be able to keep it together. She had ruined it not only for herself, but for her sister too. Swallowing thickly and clearing her throat, she glanced down to stare into her lap when the younger girl finally came and sat down beside her. She was surprised for a moment, biting her lip as she began to try to think of where to start.

"W-Well," she tried slowly, trailing off almost immediately. She fidgetted her hands with the bag in front of them. "You d-don't have to worry about being the first o-one to come out to dad anymore."

"What do you-- you didn't? I thought you weren't even. Why would you tell him?" She reached out and grabbed the bag from Tatum's hand, pulling it in towards her. Mostly to stop her sister's fidgeting, and hopefully force her to turn around.

"Here let me help." She sat it down in front of her crossing her legs. Leaving the wrinkled clothes already in the bag she picked up the next shirt from the closet and stuffed it in too. She knew if she folded the top she'd just end up redoing the whole bag and Tatum seemed to be a rush.

"Okay tell me what happened, look at me please. It was bad wasn't it?" She almost didn't need Tatum to answer, Sera wasn't stupid. Her sister was obviously packing her things in a hurry for a reason.

Tatum hesitated for a long moment of silence, letting Sera take the bag and the lead, as she usually did. When the younger girl asked her if it was bad, she found herself hesitated even further. There was really no sugar coating for a situation like this, and if Tatum didn't just out and tell her how it was, it'd be an even worse shock when their parents got home later.

"P-Pretty bad," she began slowly, before correcting herself shortly there after. "Badder than bad, like.. b-bad," the redhead added in a mumble. She still couldn't meet her sister's eyes, and she kept watching her pack the bag instead.

"Y-You knew I was, you.. you don't get to act s-stupid now," she muttered. "Why would y-you get on my b-back all the time like that if you didn't know I was.. y'know, gay. Well, n-now dad knows and he's p-pissed.. I h-have to go, like now. L-Like before he comes home, and I dunno.. I dunno even w-when that's gonna be," she explained, casting a semi-terrified look toward her bedroom window. The yard was quiet, but she was waiting for the roar of an engine at any moment.

"W-We just.. I'm s-sorry, okay? I just w-wanted him to love me f-for me, for w-who I actually am and I just thought.. it was w-worth a shot. Obviously it w-was the wrong idea."

"What do you mean badder than bad? Tatum just tell me what happened?" Sera practically bagged, pushing the bag to the side for a second, she scooted in a bit closer to her sister.

"I was joking. Of course I knew, I always knew. I never understood why you tried to pretend with me in the first place. Why would I care?" When Tatum starting to go on about being in a hurry, Sera could see the fear on her face. "Calm down, just sit okay." Sera offered, picking up the bag a again.

"I still don't understand why you'd start with him, and not like me or mom, she would have kept your secret too you know? But whatever what's done is done I guess now. Just tell me what happened and I'll pack. If we hear him, just apparate and we'll figure it out."

Tatum almost recoiled a bit as Sera scooted closer still, all of the physical closeness and serious words weren't exactly their usual territory, but she merely stayed rigidly still on the floor instead, staring down at her lap. "I just thought-- I didn't think you'd care, I j-just.. if I could just not a-act on it, if I could just n-not think about it and push it aside, but it's not.. dad is an idiot, h-he's a fucking idiot. It's not a c-choice! It's never b-been a choice," she explained hurriedly, raking a hand through her hair.

"I j-just wanted to explain myself, I thought he'd.. we're his kids, h-he's not supposed to be like this. I thought if I e-explained that I tried, like r-really hard, but I just couldn't.. I thought he'd understand, but h-he just didn't care. He wouldn't even listen he just.."

She trailed off, chewing her lip anxiously, her ears still waiting to pick up any sounds around them. She didn't want to be interrupted yet. "He h-hates me, I think. He made me g-get out of the car and I just.. w-well, I apparated home, but if I hadn't been able," she trailed off again, not really needing to say it. If she hadn't been able, she'd still be stuck out there somewhere. "Lucky I'm eighteen, huh?" she sighed. "I'm an adult, and I.. he d-doesn't think I'm m-making a very adult decision. But he's w-wrong, like I can't d-do this anymore. I'd rather go than n-not be me, than not.. b-be with Mack. I guess."
