Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
open to Joshua (family backstory - about a year ago)
Things in the Prescott home were often hectic. Jessica was not the type of woman who ever really allowed herself to love anyone, and sadly that affliction stemmed all of the way down to her children. She'd never really gotten love from her own mother, and she left home when she turned sixteen. She got involved with drugs and drinking, and she really had no care for making something of herself. When she'd met Jackson, she'd felt a strong pull and connection almost immediately. At first, it scared her, and her initial instinct was to run. But eventually, she grew curious, and soon enough the two had become involved. Jackson was a sweet man. He wasn't the strongest man in the world, in fact he gave into Jess a lot, but he loved her. And when she had Joshua, he loved her even more, and he loved his son very much. Jessica seemed to know his secret from day one, and that was a comfort to Jackson who didn't have to be afraid she would judge him for it, or think him crazy. For a while, it was just the three of them, and though things got hard sometimes Jackson seemed to hold things down. Jessica, still full of bad habits, would leave for weeks at a time. She'd run off with friends, or even other men, and drink.

It was a while before she settled down enough for Julian to come along, and the stress of another child was hard on her. She never really learned how to be a mother, and it showed ten fold with Julian. Jackson took the lead, as he had when Josh was born, and this time Joshua was right there to helpe his Dad. Jessica took off again, this time for a few months, and when she came back it was obvious she was not in good shape. She'd gotten addicted to heroin, and Jackson had to help ween her off of it. For a bit, things were good. Things were mellow. But when Jeremiah came, she took off and ran again. The stress of not knowing how to properly connect with her kids was like a failure staring her right in the face and she just didn't really know how to deal. Over the next year of Jeremiah's life, she was very painfully absent. She would come and go as she pleased, and over the past few years Jackson noticed the scent of other wolves on her. He started to wonder if she had some sort of a past, or maybe something in her genetics that drew her to his kind, and that's when he started to seek out her father. With their father gone, the kids were often left on their own, and it was up to Joshua to look after the little ones. By Jeremiah's second birthday, Jackson left on a tip of where to find Jessica's father, and he never came back.

By the time Miah was three, Jessica was around more, but mostly because Jackson was gone. She started to date other men, favoring humans this time around. She felt that wolves were to complicated. Her father had never stuck around, and now Jackson had left her. It was a while before she figured out that he was dead, but to her it was no different. He was gone now, too. The type of men she consorted with weren't the best kind, either. Drug dealers, mostly. It was easy for her to get what she wanted out of them. The boys went ignored, and when they weren't ignored, they were getting in trouble for things they didn't quite understand.

Today was no different, and the second Joshua came through the door from school, he was greeted by the sound of Julian crying as he was sent up to his room. Jessica was standing by the stairs, obviously drunk, and the moment she heard the door open she turned to look at Joshua with blurry eyes.

"Good, you're home, you can deal with them now," she said as she went over to sit on the couch.

Their home was modest. It wasn't too big, but Julian and Miah had their room they shared, and Joshua had his own. A bathroom connected the two rooms, and downstairs, away from them was their mother's room that she shared with Rick.

Joshua hated having to go to school. All day, he sat in class fidgeting, worrying about what was happening at home. It didn't help that he wasn't exactly the academic sort and school itself was incredibly boring for him. He had more important things to do at home. Knowing better than to just toss his book bag down on the floor, Joshua kept it slung over his shoulder as he carefully approached his mother.

"Do you want some coffee? I can fix you some," he offered, trying to make it sound innocent. But he only offered her coffee when he wanted her to sober up, when he could tell that she was trashed. Sometimes, he thought that if he made her enough of the strong black liquid, she would magically start acting nicer to all of them. He loved her very much, as all boys loved their mothers, and he wanted to help.

Jessica settled Joshua with a look before she reached out to slap the boy across the face. "Don't be a smart ass, Joshua," she said angrily before she went over to sit down on the couch. She grabbed a cigarette to light it up as she turned her head to look over at Josh as she took a drag. "Sometimes it astounds me how ungrateful you and your brothers are," she added before she noticed Julian peering around the corner at the top of the stairs. "I told you to go to your room, Julian."

"But my hand hurts," Julian said softly as he looked at Joshua and he had his right hand against his chest. It was obvious he was hurt, his face red and his body was trembling. He wanted to go down to Joshua but he stayed put at the top of the stairs.

"Well," Jessica said as she exhaled a cloud of smoke. "That's what you get when you steal. Rick was just showing you what happens to people who steal," she added before she looked at Joshua. "Jeremiah has been fussing and annoying me all day, he finally fell asleep, and Julian better not wake him up."

Joshua was always surprised by how strong his mother was. He felt strong, stronger than the other boys at school, maybe even stronger than Rick sometimes, but his mother could always make him smart. He didn't dare put his hand up to touch his cheek though, no matter how much it burned. It was best if he didn't draw attention to his ailments for fear that it would make her more angry.

Casting a furtive glance up at Julian, he tried to see exactly what had happened to his hand so he could quietly gather what he would need to help. There would be some things up in the bathroom, and some things he'd hidden in his room, a first aid kit and the like. "I'll go upstairs and make sure he doesn't wake anyone," he said obediently. Sometimes, he went so far as to say she was right to punish the boys in some situations, but never in front of them, and not because he believed it. He just thought maybe it would quell her anger and save them all from more wrath. But as he got older, he did so less and less, becoming more defiant and protective. Still, he was smart and knew when he was needed elsewhere and when not to pick a fight.

"Good, you do that," Jessica said as she poured more Jack Daniels into her glass so that she could have a sip. Rick was out on a deal, and he'd be home soon. They'd probably go out for the night and not come back until morning, or maybe even the afternoon. Jessica never really worked, Jackson always provided money as best he could for the family. And now Rick was the one who paid for things, which was probably why the boys had to do without so often.

It was easy for Jessica to put Joshua on ignore as he headed for the stairs, and Julian waited anxiously for his older brother to come up them before he held out an arm so that Joshua could pick him up. The moment he was in his big brother's arm, he tucked his head down and pressed his tear streaked face against Joshua's shoulder as he sniffled back the urge to cry some more.

It was easier to hate her when he didn't have to face her. But being confronted with her presence always made him wish she would just love him.

Once upstairs, he gathered Julian up and carried him into the bathroom. "It's all right," he said quietly as he smoothed his hand over the back of his little brother's head. After sitting him up on the counter, he ran some cool water over a washcloth and then pressed it to his cheeks to quell some of the heated pink that was splotching Julian's face from holding back tears. The bathroom door was shut and he didn't think their mother would be able to hear them. "Lemme see your hand," he said gently.

Julian sniffled and tried to stop himself from shaking once they were in the bathroom. Their bathroom was in between the little one's room and Joshua's, and Jeremiah could be seen curled up in Josh's bed. When his big brother asked for his hand, Julian hesitated before he forced himself to uncurl his arm from his chest. His little wrist was red from being forceably held, and it took him some effort to open his hand up. His face scruntched up with the urge to cry and made a soft whimper as he held his hand out to Joshua. There were tail tell burn rings that were raw and told Joshua Julian had gotten a hand to the stove, something Josh had gotten before.

"Miah was hungry he said his tummy hurt bad and I was just trying to get him something to eat," he said in between little cries. "I was hungry, too."

He knew far too much about first aid for someone his age. He was, at the very least, thankful that they healed faster than normal boys. Still, at their young age, Julian and Jeremiah were more susceptible to severe damage. "I have some cookies in my backpack from school," he said as he ran the cold water again. The skin was still hot, even though the burn had probably happened a couple hours ago. "We'll get them after we're done in here, okay?" Whenever he got some extra change, he saved it so that he could stock up on treats at the vending machines at school. It was an easy way to sneak food into the house since neither his mother or Rick ever thought to go through his book bag for cash.

Putting Julian's hand under the cool water, he hoped that it would make the burn feel a little better. "Hold it under there a little while," he said as he got into the medicine cabinet to take down some Children's Tylenol. He looked at the expiration date, long past, but it was all they had for now. Their father had always said that when they got older, medications wouldn't work on them much at all. But the tylenol seemed to help a little with the boys and maybe it was just placebo, but Joshua wasn't going to question it. He gave Julian a little dixie cup of water. "Have you had much to drink today?"

Tears sprang to Julian's eyes as Jodhua put his hand underneath cold water. He bit back a whimper and pressed his face against the front of Joshua's chest for a moment before he pulled back to take the Tylenol. He sipped at the water, then finished it off before he shrugged at his brother's question.

"Mama put Miah in the ice bath for crying too much," he said softly. Jeremiah exhausted himself and had finally fallen asleep.

"I can't wait until you're both old enough to go to school," he said with a sigh. That way, they'd be safely away from the house during the same time that Joshua couldn't protect them. Not that he ever did a perfect job when he was actually around either. Sometimes there was just no stopping it.

He glanced over his shoulder and opened the door to his room so that he could see Miah curled up on his bed. After putting some burn ointment on Julian's hand, he wrapped it very loosely in gauze so that it was covered but could still breath. He picked him up and went to sit on the bed next to their brother, covering him up tightly in the covers to make sure he kept warm. They would save some food for him for when he woke up. "Maybe we can get some pizza when Mom and Rick leave," he said as he tugged out a couple of the cookies he'd stashed and handed them to Julian.

Julian was silent as Joshua fixed his hand up. He didn't say a word, but he winced a few times, and when Josh picked him up to carry him to the bed he tipped his head forward against his brother's shoulder. Once he was settled on the bed, he looked at Miah as Joshua covered him up.

"I dun wanna go to school, Miah will be all by himself here," he said softly. "What if they hurt him even worse?"

"Maybe we can say that you're the same age," he said, trying not to show the worry that that brought to his face. Julian was right; Miah would be left home alone with them for at least a year and that terrified him. "Or you can start a little later when Miah's ready and then you can go together." Joshua resolved himself to start working on the arrangements for that now.

He opened the bag of oatmeal cookies and put one to Julian's mouth. He knew how the boy could get so worked up worrying about his little brother that he wouldn't want to eat. "Come on, you need some food."

Joshua's words seemed to do the job of calming Julian down, and he moved to crawl up onto his brother's lap as he took the cookie and bit into it. He chewed slowly, and it was obvious that he was absolutely exhausted as he looked down at Miah.

"How are we gonna get a pizza?" he asked as he tipped his head up to look at Joshua.

Reaching out to touch Jeremiah, he smoothed a hand over his hair, hoping to soothe him even in sleep. He could almost feel the malnutrition radiating off of them. "I got some money," he said. It wasn't a lie, but it was far from the whole truth. He'd had the opportunity at lunch to go through someone else's unattended bag and he'd stolen the money. But he didn't want to tell Julian that because he didn't want the boy to think less of him and he didn't want to set the example that stealing was okay.

"We'll have them deliver it. What do you want on it? I'm sure Jeremiah will want whatever you get."

"Pepperoni," Julian said as he finished off his cookie and then curled up on Joshua's lap, holding his injured hand to hid chest. "How come you have to go to school? I don't like when you leave. Can't you just stay home with me and Miah?"

"If I don't go to school, I can't grow up to be an architect and then I won't be able to have enough money to take care of you and Miah," he explained. Part of him just wanted to run away, pack the boys up and take them with him to some place far from here. He could work as a carpenter or something, make a living that way.

But hope for his mother kept him here, hope that she'd come around someday. That, and fear, though he wouldn't admit that part.

Julian shifted off of Joshua's lap and settled down next to Miah so that he could sling an arm around his little brother once he'd crawled beneath the covers. He wanted to make sure Miah was warm. He looked up at Joshua and smiled softly, though it was a sad smile, it had some hope. "I just miss you when you are gone, that's all. So does Miah," he said quietly.

Joshua scooted down so he could lie with them as well. The ice baths were bad for thee little ones and it always seemed like forever until their skin was warm again, even with wolf blood pumping through them. He knew that Mom and Rick would have killed them had they not been what they were and deep down, he pretended that that was why their mother let it happen so hard, because she knew they'd survive.

"I miss you guys too. Vacation time is coming soon though, and I'll be home more often so we can play."

When Joshua laid down with them, it put Miah in between them and Julie wiggled closer so that he could be snug against Miah and Joshua. He tipped his head up to look at Joshua with big blue eyes the same color as Josh's and he lifted his good hand to curl around Joshua's shirt. "You and Miah are my favorite," he said softly.

Joshua stared at him for a good long while, gaze full of adoration. He was always surprised how much he could love someone else. "You have two favorites? I have two favorites too," he put his hand on Julian's hand and rested it there. "Take a little nap and when you wake up, mom and rick will be gone for the night, okay?"

Julian lifted his head up and leaned over Jeremiah to give Joshua a little kiss on the cheek, then he kissed Miah's cheek too before he settled back down and closed his eyes. He curled up close to Miah, arm still slung around his brother's little body so that he could be as close to Joshua as possible. It wasn't long before he passed out, completely exhausted from the day.
