SNITCH! PARTY IN THE PARK! OPEN TO ALL

She wouldn't say she flounced down the steps of the stage, but...well, okay, flouncing was a good word for it. Mattie skipped the last two steps and landed easily on the grass, feeling as if she couldn't stop moving because then the amazing feeling coursing through her would disappear and she'd never feel it again and it was just too exciting and good and awesome and she was here!

Nicola was here! In the crowd that was watching Mattie and her band perform. Her sister had come! Mattie nearly lost her place in the song when she'd spotted Nicola, but thankfully she was able to cover her slight slip up and finished the set. Food was now coming out so they'd taken an intermission and Mattie---Mattie wanted to go find her sister, she did, she wanted to go and hug her and nearly pass out from her exhilaration, but spotting Nicola from afar was a lot different than actually speaking to her and---what if she was only here because of her quidditch playing boyfriend? The one who wasn't playing anymore?

That didn't make much sense. Regardless, her sister was here, she'd seen her perform, and Mattie couldn't be any happier.

"Oomph--MAX!" Mattie let out in one big gulp of air. She had been too busy watching Nicola's head bob in and out of sight on the other side of the gathering (which was so fun and festive and just--springy) that she had not noticed her feet had kept moving and straight into Max Fancourt. Her heels sunk into the ground, still damp from the rain from the night before, and Mattie tugged her foot out. She fanned herself, feeling hot for a million reasons. "Hi, hi!"

Ever since her impromptu, and slightly over extended holiday to New York, Delilah had been working twice as hard to make up for the lost time. It wasn't that she had fallen behind, she didn't believe she had, but that she wanted to make sure she was doing her very best. And not getting to distracted.

Which was incredibly difficult as her boyfriend was incredibly handsome and sweet and kind and currently had an exorbitant amount of free time on his hands. She never minded as much before that the off season for Quidditch and Dueling never quite seemed to match up. It was easy enough to steal away a few days to make time for Charlie. Now that she was completely smitten with a player it was annoying. So very annoying that she had to go practice and duel knowing that she could very well be spending the day on Matt's couch watching his muggley movies and eating popcorn.

Now though, she was basking in the spring sunlight. She loved spring. It meant warmer weather. It meant her birthday was fast approaching. Yet another annoying matter, as it once again fell on the first day of pre-season. Again, more so than the year before because she had had plans which involved her boyfriend to not be working. But that was for another day.

Today she had no practice, no duels and was going to enjoy every moment she could. She grinned looking over to Matt hopping out of her seat. "Dance with me?" she asked holding her hands out to him, rocking on her heels. She loved dancing with Matt. It always reminded her of their first date, how incredibly happy she felt dancing the night away next to him. She had a feeling he was something special when he didn't even bother correcting her when she got the lyrics wrong to a song, letting her sing them loudly anyway.

"Do you know what today is?" Delilah asked once she coaxed him out of his seat and onto the dance floor.

Even with the whirlwind of media attention that followed after the world cup, Matt had never felt so relaxed. After moping about the final match for approximately two and three-quarters hours, he was able to appreciate the experience, learn from his mistakes, and revel in the fact that he held his own against the best players in the world. That he was one of the best players in the world. A few years ago he was riding the bench, jumping from team to team until the Cannons finally gave him a chance, and now here he was. Happier than he'd ever been.

"Hmm." Matt pondered Delilah's question. Her birthday was not for another week, he was pretty sure all talk of quidditch returning was to be avoided...He looked down at her and shook his head. "Ten days until the anniversary of the Spectacular Spinnet Twins' Birth?"

He didn't know. Matt did not think that Delilah would be so smiley and cheerful with him if he was forgetting something important, so he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her closer.

"Or perhaps it's a holiday in honor of the most sort-of-successful goblin revolt?" Matt grinned, his good mood unwavering.

Delilah grinned at Matt's answers. "Both probably correct, but still wrong." She tilted her head as if considering actually telling her boyfriend. It was something he should know after all. Delilah should be all indignation that he forgot, but being as she forget herself until she found the old invitation lying around yesterday, she really couldn't be mad.

"Today is a great day. A fabulous day," she started dramatically. "Today marks seven months since I first got to dance with you." Delilah punctuated it with a quick kiss. With all the excitement with the world cup, she had some how missed that she had been with Matthew for half a year. Which was fine because she didn't need silly trinkets to mark every month they had manage to stick together. The only reason she had brought it up was because if it had escaped her notice that they had been together so long, Matthew probably didn't realize either.

"Well technically its in two days, but here we are dancing, at a party. So I figured it was close enough."

His eyes widened in honest surprise. Seven months? Matt thought back to their first date, the blind date. He had been so terrified that the evening would be filled with awkward conversation and his mental construction of an escape route through the loo's window. When Delilah had shown up and completely knocked him off his feet--well, he was certainly glad he'd listened to Kendall Broadmoor.

"Seven months, huh?" he said, sounding quite proud of that number, that length of time. Matt hadn't had a relationship that lasted this long in quite some time, and he and Delilah had already shared so much. He was able to open up to her about his past, she helped him look toward the future, and he found life to be so easy with her. "That's quite some feat."

Matt had fallen head over heels for girls before, but the relationships had always hit bumps in the road that they could never get over before they could find their footing. He and Delilah worked, their synchronization was remarkable. He really couldn't put into words how much she meant to him and how glad he was to have her in his life.

Well, actually, he supposed he could---

"Delilah," Matt began. He smiled widely, feeling really blessed. The music stopped around them and it felt like a rather perfect moment to--someone tapped him on the shoulder and Matt turned. He didn't recognize the bloke, but he frowned at his horrid timing.

"Matt Summerby?" the man said. He was young, he looked only a few years out of Hogwarts. Matt's eyebrows went up. Was he asking for an autograph on the middle of the dance floor? "You don't know me, but---I know your brother. Caleb, I know where Caleb is."

His heart stopped. Matt's hands dropped from Delilah's waist as he turned to face the man.

"What did you just say?"

Delilah nodded wrapping her arms around his neck as they swayed to the fading beats of the last song. Seven months was quite the feat. She beamed at him as the music stopped, her heart racing (in a good way) as Matt said her name. With how he was looking at her she felt like, she was almost certain he was about to say---

Delilah blinked as suddenly as the moment was there it was gone. Hands no longer on her waist and boyfriend no longer in her arms. What was he going to say? It was important, and now some random had his full attention. Frowning, Delilah peered around Matthew's shoulder to tell this guy to get lost, there would be time for autographs later, or not, if she had her way.

Her mouth promptly snapped shut though as the man repeated what he had said before. He knew where Matthew's muggle brother was? How was that even possible. Delilah knew though, that with this information she had lost Matthew for the night. There was no way he was going to ignore it, and even at her most selfish couldn't blame him.

"How?" She asked filling the silence that seemed to stretch on. Glancing between Matthew and this guy who seemed to be only concerned with her boyfriend. She should be happy, that this guy knew where Caleb was. It was all Matthew really wanted, but she couldn't help but feel slightly annoyed that their moment was ruined.

It was as if he was on the pitch, his eyes going into the tunnel vision used to grab the snitch. Matt grabbed the man's arm and led him off the dance floor. They ended up in an empty gazebo a little bit outside the event.

"How--how could you? How did---how!" was all he could manage to say. Matt shot Delilah a look of strangled confusion before turning back to the man. "Who are you?"

The bloke put his hands up, looking quite terrified. Matt wanted to shake him, how, how had he known his brother's name? There were only a handful of people that could have possibly known!

"I was reading your world cup profile! And---and I'm muggle-born, I went to university after Hogwarts and--and my roommate was adopted and--I had always thought he looked just like you--can you let go of my arm? I think the blood stopped flowing."

Matt hadn't realized how deeply his fingers had been gripping onto the bloke's arm. He let go and stepped back, putting a hand to his head. If his heart wasn't racing so fast, he was sure he could've passed out from shock. This surely--it surely wasn't enough to truly believe this man. But if he was right. Matt felt his chest clench.

"Give me--give me your information, give me--what's your name?"

"J-John. Er---" John reached into his cloak pocket and pulled out a flyer for the Snitch! event and conjured a quill and began writing. "Caleb's my flat mate, we live in Manchester."

"Manchester--" Matt exclaimed, feeling ready to faint. He lived in Manchester? Caleb had been minutes away, just--just--- "Right, get---I have to---I---" He stuffed the flyer into his pocket and stalked out of the gazebo. He had to think, he had to think.

Everything was moving too quickly, Delilah could barely keep up as Matt practically dragged this stranger off the dance floor. Her confused words tangled into something of a yelp as managed to follow her boyfriend to the gazebo. She had never see him like this before.

"Matt!" she tried to get his attention but he didn't seem to hear her as he demanded this blokes information. Her eyes flicked between Matthew and this John---John what? Couldn't he even bother with a last name? She wasn't sure who to watch. There was something about all of this, that had her on edge. Maybe it was just that this John had bad timing, or maybe it was something else. Whatever it was, she didn't have time to think on it as here boyfriend was moving again. She hesitated half a second, studying the bloke who had just handed over the information before turning to follow.

"Matthew, wait." She called trying futility to get him to slow down. Finally she managed to grab his wrist. "Matt. Slow down. You can't--- you can't just-- what if--" You can't just go over there. What if he'd wrong? Delilah felt horrible for even thinking it, let along almost saying it aloud. But they didn't know anything about this guy, he had just shown up out of no where and suddenly had all this information.

"Don't you think you should ask this John guy a few more questions before racing off?"

Matt turned quickly to face Delilah, "I'm not! I'm not going---I just need to---I need to think."

There was a great panic striking him fiercely. Was he wasting time? Was he being played for a fool? There was no reason, no---how could this man have known his brother's name? Matt had kept Caleb such a closely guarded secret that sometimes he forgot details about his former life. It had been over ten years since he'd lost his little brother, ten long, miserable years that Matt had kept bottled up, and now it felt like the cork was about to burst and was ready to explode.

He had to breathe, he had to think and breathe. Matt put his hands on Delilah's shoulders, attempting to steady himself. Five minutes ago he was dancing on cloud nine, and now he felt like he was hurtling to the ground breaking the sound barrier.

"I'm--let me take you home and...and I've got to go back to my place. I'm got to think, I have to---" Matt shook his head and shut his eyes to catch his breath. Good or bad, Matt was certain that his life was going to change forever. His eyes flashed open and he looked at her, a nervous smile creeping on his face. "Please, I've got to do this."

Delilah stopped short not expecting Matt to turn so quickly. She didn't know what to do, what to say. She froze at his words. She wanted to go with him. Be some sort of help. The last place Delilah wanted to be was back at her flat with nothing to do but fret over how her boyfriend was dealing with the fact that he may know where his brother was.

It stung that his first thought was do drop her off and leave her behind while he dealt with it on his own. That he didn't want her there to help. Though what could she really do? Sighing slightly, Delilah reached up to cup his face gently. "Breathe, rainbow eyes. This is your thing, remember? Sunshiney optimism that is almost blinding, but you've got to remember to breathe."

She gave him a small smile and a kiss. "I'll just stay here, I think I saw Nora earlier, so I can make her entertain me." It was a lie, Delilah had no idea if Nora was at the party or not, but she didn't want Matt to think he was leaving her all alone. And if Nora wasn't here, there was always Charlie. "You go do what you need to do, and if you need anything, let me know, okay? I'm right here."

Carys stretched her legs down the bench of the picnic table, sipping quite quickly from the bottle of beer she'd swiped from the table across the way. Who had time to wait on line for a new drink? The party in the park was nice, a relaxing afternoon that was sorely needed. She'd done her quick interview with the broadcasters, Snitch! always having been one of her favorite media outlets. Carys did what she had to do, and now it was time to drink until she couldn't remember anything.

"Michal Conway," Carys crowed, lifting the bottle to toast her approaching friend. She grinned widely, swinging her legs down to the grass and only wincing slightly at the pain in her ribs the twisting motion caused.

She patted the space beside her on the bench, beckoning her friend over. "I have not seen you in ages, come, come. Share a drink--on second thought, wrangle another because this one's almost empty."

How silly was it that the alcoholic drinks didn't refill themselves? How many glasses of water could a person possibly want to swallow? Carys shook her head at the thought, leaning back into the table and pressing her elbows into the wood.

Michal paused, own drink in hand, and stared down at Carys feeling vaguely curious and mildly perturbed. When was the last time he had seen a beverage of the alcoholic kind in Carys Llewellyn's hand? And when was the last time she had openly asked for one? And, wait---

He withheld glancing around, knowing Carys would not take kindly to any indication of seeing if anyone else was present to watch over her (yes, that was the word). She was here alone as well? Michal frowned slightly. Unusual.

"Carys Llewellyn," he replicated Cary's tone, stepping forward to Carys with a slow pace. Maybe he was drunk, and had entered a reality state in which everyone else was entirely more smashed than he thought he himself was. That was possible. But not at all likely. Easing down in the spot indicated, he took his time to speak again.

"What kind of drink?" Michal wondered aloud after finally sitting comfortably. This party pinic gathering afternoon had him in a surprisingly good mood-- or at least amiable. Was that what exposure to sunlight did to you? Michal docked his sunglasses back atop his head.

Carys pointed a stiff finger to reprimand his incorrect name calling, but she didn't particularly feel like being much of a Parkin these days. She dropped her hand to his shoulder, eyeing him as she tried to figure out how serious his question really was.

"A bottle of milk--what kind of drink, sheesh! You're wasting my valuable time, Lynch," Carys said with a laugh, sulking forward as she pulled away from him and stared out at the party. Perhaps she could use her superior eye-contact-making skills to bring a waiter over, or maybe even summon a bottle from across the way. Surely there would be no problem with a glass bottle shooting at high speeds across a crowded party, yeah?

Bollocks. Carys slumped a little more before she shot up and twisted to face Michal, crossing her legs underneath her. Her spring dress (DRESS!) and flowing-in-the-wind hair gave a completely different impression than her current state actually was, and Carys preened for a moment. She felt nice and pretty for the first time in weeks.

"You ready for the season? Any top secrets from Falmouth I can try to get out of you?" she poked him in the side, causing herself to let out a loud laugh, which was cut short by a throbbing pain in her ribs. Carys continued to grin, but pressed her hand to the spot to apply some pressure. "I bet I could get my darling Howell to spill."

His brows rose high, and a lingering ill smile permeated on his face. But before Michal could react further, or more importantly take the time to create an appropriate and insightful response, a sharp jab to his side distracted him. He reacted fully, twisting away from Carys' blunt force of a hand.

"Oy!" Michal let out, and immediately rubbed the tender spot under his ribs with his hand. Carys was well aware of how freakishly strong she was; he did not appreciate her even in the slightest manner of potential maiming. He scoffed as he picked up the edges of his shirt to check, in fact, if a large and purple bruise hadn't already formed. He found himself quite shocked when it hadn't.

"Howell wouldn't tell you anything," Michal stated, perhaps a bit darker than necessary. But, when it came to secrets and Howell Williams, Michal couldn't help but feel disgruntled; it felt like his young friend was keeping more and more from him everyday and less inclined to make Michal privy to any of it. He frowned further, and feeling especially cross now that his fleeting good mood had been ruined, spoke again quickly.

"Michal you haven't played since August, are worried about that at all?" he began, talking in a much higher tone that implied a female speaker. The fact that it matched, to the best of his ability, Carys' welsh accent undertones was completely purposeful. "As your friend I've been thinking how that might be worrisome."

He dropped his shirt, and turned his full attention back to Carys.

"Pfft, Falmouth secrets. Please," he grumbled, also docking his shades back over his eyes. "More like Catapult secrets. Everyone knows the land of prim and proper has galleons worth buried under that pitch, I should be asking you about that."

CAMERON

Nicola looked down at her timepiece. Was it time to leave yet? Was it within social grace to depart? Despite believing there really wasn't much of a pre-set etiquette at a social gathering that had grass as the floor, Nicola wavered uncomfortably. She did not usually descend herself to such low-brow events, but after Mattie had invited her, she had thought... perhaps it would be nice. Of course, that had all been before she watched her sister, in horror, belt out a four minute ballad entitled "Nicola."

Her hand gripped her opposite elbow tighter. She had, in a moment of weakness, vaguely agreed in attending, and then in another moment of weakness suggest that Cameron Montgomery escort her because it would be a marvelous way for him to meet more people in England! And wouldn't that be nice?

Nope.

Feeling uncomfortable, as if the entire audience knew that she was exactly the Nicola Mattie had been referring too, she put on a brave smile and attempted to act as if nothing was wrong. She turned to Cameron beside her, thankful that it looked like the band was taking a break of some kind, but not keen to allow a situation in which Mattie could approach her.

"Well!" Nicola clapped her hands together, speaking quickly to break the uncomfortable silence brewing. "It looks like the performance is over." It wasn't. But she couldn't stand here any longer. Pitifully hopeful, she looked up at Cameron. "Would you like to get going?"

London was starting to grow on Cameron despite his efforts to hate it and everyone who had lived there. It turned out that when he quit feeling sorry for himself, that most were quite pleasant to him and not everyone had known his brother or family. He enjoyed his flat, nicer than his one in South Carolina but not extravagant. He was starting to like London and he wasn’t quite sure how he felt about it.

Cameron certainly wasn't expecting to have such a great time out at this event that Nicola had invited him out to. He had been thinking on what he could do while staying in London, as he never really considered not working an option. He considered for a while, picking up work at a local apothecary again, but he couldn't ever seem to manage to let himself go apply. He only really liked keeping track of the finances of the shop anyways.

Sitting here surrounded by other people who had more money than they knew what to do with, Cameron supposed there was a potential job opportunity if he could somehow manage to--- Cameron was pulled from his reverie with Nicola's clap. He blinked at her slightly confused as he was almost certain the music wasn't done. And he really didn't want to go just yet, as he couldn't remember the last time he had enjoyed just being around people.

Nicola seemed on edge though, and he was her date. "I suppose. If you would like to go." He said a bit enthusiastically. "Though, I was really hoping to get at least one dance out of you before we left."

Her brows shot up, and Nicola pulled her bottom lip back in muted surprise. Of course, she hadn't really thought much of the idea, only a little as until recently she had been faithfully designated to another. But, she would be lying if she said she hadn't entertained the idea, however small, of becoming more intimately acquainted with Cameron Montgomery. Was he suggesting such with one day? No, of course not, but Nicola knew very well how things could sprout and change from one simple five minute exchange.

But she so felt very uncomfortable at the thought of staying here even a moment longer.

Nicola stopped summoning select items back into the picnic basket she had brought along for treats. If it was just one dance... she put her hands down. Mattie would never approach her if she was obviously occupied with someone else, too. No, her sister knew far better than that! This thought eased Nicola's discomfort significantly.

"Oh very well, you've convinced me!" Nicola let out, dropping her hands to her lap. She smiled, genuinely, and placed her wand back into her hand purse. "Do you enjoy dancing Cameron?" she asked as she stood up, taking a moment to ensure her clothes were still perfectly pressed despite sitting on the ground.

Cameron smiled, taking Nicola's hand to lead her to the dance floor. He was pleased that the music put on during the intermission was a bit slower, as most of the dances he knew were more prim and proper than fast and fun. Resting one hand on her waist, and taking hers in his other. "Every now and then." He mused, leading her in time with the music. "My Auntie made me take lessons when I was younger. She thought it would help me be less shy."

It worked, for the most part. He was standing here after all, dancing with a very beautiful witch. Nicola intrigued Cameron. All prim and proper, easy to tell she came from money. Normally, it was something he avoided, but there was something about her that had him hanging around. He was certain that he could learn much about English Wizarding Society from her. What was expected, the gossip, who to talk to if he wanted to pursue this inkling of an idea he had.

First though, he wanted to know more about Nicola. Like if she was more than her pretty robes and high society. Like what about this event made her so fidgety. He thought for a moment it was his company, but if that were the case, Cameron doubted that she would have stayed when he asked for a dance. "What about you, Nicola?" Cameron asked spinning her gently. "Do you enjoy dancing?"

Jaw ajar, Nicola marveled at her date. He was a very good dancer, sweeping her off her feet in the moment so entirely she couldn't control her ever-so-slightly gapping mouth. It took a couple of moments, but with time, Nicola eventually collected herself proper again. Who knew that Americans could move so well?

Nicola watched Cameron's face carefully until he began to notice, and quickly averted her gaze before he could catch her staring. She tossed her hair back with a slight head nod.

"I do enjoy dancing," she responded faintly, perhaps not as poised as she thought she was. Her body still felt a bit warm, and her face a bit pink. "I enjoy it very much. Ever since I was little I would---" Nicola began, but quickly cut herself off before getting too carried away. What had she been about to say? That she would dance to the songs her sister would practice? The sister that just performed on stage not moments ago?

"--- I would dance about the house like a fiend." She smiled, vaguely, now feeling even less capable of making it through this afternoon. She had been risking enough being seen here by any of her less-than-amicable socialite dignitaries, and now all these memories and emotions with her sister it seemed quite impossible from hiding it all from slipping onto Cameron's radar.

Nicola swallowed. "You were shy when you were young?" she smiled. "I find that difficult to believe seeing you now."

He grinned at the thought of Nicola dancing around her house. It was a bit hard to imagine, as she seemed to have little patience for silliness. Though he was sure he if he tried, it wouldn't be to hard to drag it out of her.

Cameron's hand tremored slightly at her comment. His shyness was a direct result of starting school and learning about his parentage. School wasn't easy for him, and it took a lot for him to get past that. Everything that had happened over the past few months had almost sent him spiraling back to that.

To have Nicola say that, well then he had to be doing better than he had thought. "Ah, well," he chuckled slightly ducking his head. "I use to have a stutter for a bit, but that was years ago."

As the song slowed to its end, Cameron paused not quite ready to leave. Eventually, not able to think of an excuse to keep a hold of her any longer, he let go of her hand. He looked around the crowd, confused as to why she was so desperate to leave. This was the most he had felt at home in ages. "I suppose, uh, you would like to leave now?"

For not the first time upon becoming acquainted with Cameron, Nicola's jaw dropped and her mouth formed into a tiny circle. "I had no idea!" she revealed, quiet shocked.

A stutter? Why, she had no idea, there wasn't even the faintest of hints in his manner of speech or persona. How difficult was overcoming a stutter, she wondered. Extremely, Nicola could only assume, as accomplishing anything perfectly took many hours and a substantial amount of devotion...

Nicola had just been about to ask if he had been teased in school when Cameron dropped her hand and stopped dancing. Over already? She blinked, pulling herself out of her own thoughts to reacquaint herself with her surroundings. Her mouth snapped back shut, and uncomfortably formed into a pressed squiggle. She would like to leave, as with every passing second the likelihood of getting trapped into a situation with Mattie was high, but the sad longing in Cameron's voice made her heart twinge with guilt. He had been very gentleman-like all afternoon, not once asking about her erratic bouts. It would be very inconsiderate to demand departure when he felt so content with staying a bit longer...

Wringing her hands together, Nicola pulled back her lips to form a thin line. Eventually, she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "I would not mind staying longer," she began, something of a nervous smile now appearing on her face. "As long as you wish to enjoy the atmosphere as well."

It would be harder for Mattie to track her down if she was constantly moving, yes? "But only if you tell me more about when you were younger," Nicola hastily stipulated, and turned to hold out her bent elbow for Cameron to take so they could properly walk together.

"Hi!"

Hands up, Max only faltered slightly when he ran into his former housemate. With a sheepish smile, he quickly thought that this hadn't exactly been how he wanted to run into Mattie, more figuratively than literally would have been preferable, but there wasn't much that could be done about it now. Not that--- Max found himself floundering within his own thoughts; there were much worse than bumping head first into the person he had been trying to get the attention of.

"Sorry!" he said, palms facing up apologetically. Smiling briefly, Max looked down and rubbed the back of his head before looking back to Mattie. "I should have said something when you were walking up..."

He'd admit, Max felt a bit guilty that this had been the first performance of hers he attended. Or, professional performance at least; he was fairly certain her Common Room or courtyard strumming didn't count much. But it had been many years since they had been in Hogwarts, and that hardly excused his poor support. Smiling fully, he removed his hand from behind his neck and gestured at Mattie.

Waiting a beat, he then stated, "You were--- that was great!"

Her blush bloomed across her cheeks. Mattie had known that some of her friends would be in the audience, but she had been focusing all of her attention on finding her sister that she hadn't spotted their faces. For Max of all people to be the first to greet her was overwhelming, and she really, truly hoped he hadn't listened too closely to some of the lyrics of her opening number.

It was so easy to fancy a person from a distance. Mattie's time in the muggle world allowed her to truly fantasize about the what-ifs and maybes when it came to her friends and family back in the magical community. Now that she was stepping back into their world, perhaps she wouldn't be able to so freely express her feelings if it meant having to confront those she was actually writing about.

"Thanks!" she said, truly grateful. "I feel like I'm more background noise than anything, with all these famous players milling about, but." Mattie bobbed her head back and forth in a pleased manner. Even if she was just providing some atmosphere for the event, it was a great way to meet people and see how the crowd responded to her music.

"Are you having fun? Are you here with anyone?" Mattie asked quickly, not realizing that she had not-only-rhymed, but had not so discreetly inquired if he'd brought a date. Merlin, her blush was never going to fade.

Max couldn't help but think that Mattie must be overheated and dehydrated with how red her cheeks had become, so he quickly opened his palms and looked down to his pockets... and remembered that he had long ago disposed of anything edible, food or beverage, and therefore was unable to give anything to her to help with that.

Or he could buy her a drink? His eyes immediately lit up at the thought, and Max wasted little time in turning and pointing to a stand he had just passed a bit away behind him.

"Let me buy you something to drink!" he suggested with so much enthusiasm, he had nearly forgotten she had asked him a completely different question. One hand dropped to his side and the other to the back of his head, he rubbed it abashedly.

"I mean, yes I am," Max nodded. "And, no, not really." Realizing that made it sound like he was quite possibly a social outcast or looking to hone some stalking skills, he quickly amended that statement. "Melania said she would come with me, but then she had to make an important trip to Italy, so then I just decided to go stag."

He shrugged his shoulders. Actually, if Melania had had her way, he would be in Italy as well no doubt helping carrel Melania's younger brother into some sense, but after last time, Max had, politely as possible, asserted he would visit next weekend if Melania was still there. He also had school to not miss, and it was just--- it was better this way, even if it meant Melania being a bit cross with him at the moment.

A drink! That would be splendid. Mattie gladly followed him to the stand and tried not to be too picky when it came to what sort of refreshment. Slipping into the seat beside Max, Mattie was reminded of all the nice times they'd had in Hogwarts. They'd had a good group of people in their house that year, and the only drama that Mattie may have run into was trying not to embarrass her little Slytherin sister. Though, when Melania's name was brought up, the word drama blared between her ears. She took a long drink in an attempt to hide her flash of memories about Max's best friend.

"Italy must be beautiful this time of the year," Mattie said, putting her drink down. Her family used to travel a lot when she was little, but as she grew older Mattie had brewed up excuses to stay behind and miss the trips. She'd begun to feel uncomfortable at the highly formal settings, unable to manage the long evenings without growing antsy and preoccupied with inappropriate things like sneaking away into the gardens with boys, or---hm.

Mattie patted Max's knee excitedly, "I'm so glad to see you! How's your job going? Oh, I was scared no one would show--We should do this more often! I don't necessarily have to be on stage, of course--what's the biggest beast you've healed?"

Her mind flitted a bit when she was excited and Mattie took a deep breath. She sent him an apologetic smile. "Er--I mean, if your schedule isn't too busy, of course. Maybe then I can get my questions out in an orderly fashion..."

He glanced down at his knee for a moment, temporarily distracted by Mattie's sudden touch. Max stared, thinking for a brief moment before slipping back into attentive consciousness. Had she ever done that before? In school? Had that been... something they did?

"Uh," Max faltered, his mind still lagging to catch up. What had been the question? Questions. He let out a laugh and rubbed the side of his face slowly. Eventually, his mind caught up and he attempted his best to answer her questions. "Um---"

"A winged horse," Max nodded with enthusiasm, raising his hands up wide and far apart to help emphasize just how big the magical creature was. Of course, it hadn't been all by himself and he would hardly call it a job yet, as he felt he was doing much more studying than being paid to do a job. But his studies would lead to a job, so that was what mattered, in the end. "I love it, I love what I'm doing and the people in my program, and it's really--- it's really nice, it feels right."

Looking down at his knees, Max swallowed before continuing. Smiling faintly, he turned his head slightly to look at Mattie out of the corner of his eye. "It would be great to see you more. It's been very long, I'd almost forgotten...." Max trailed off, relatively unsure of what he was even saying. His mind still felt slow, lethargic from the heat and hyped up from... well, he wasn't sure what, but it felt on edge. Perhaps from attending this event lonesome; usually wherever he went it wasn't without a partner to attend with. "It's been a long time."

Estella bit on the end of her straw, the condensation of the cold bottle of water in her hands making it hard to hold onto. Her eyes scanned the gathering, which was nice and relaxing, but in her current state she was not happy to be there. The past few weeks had consisted of early mornings and late nights at the studio under the guise of intense rehearsal for the spring recital. Estella had put all her attention on the performances, which helped her hide her real source of anxiety.

It was amazing they were even here, though Estella supposed that the captain of the world cup winning Irish team would be the main attraction for a quidditch company's event. She was so extremely proud of her husband, but she'd been keeping a distance since...

Estella sighed and pulled her hair into a ponytail as she watched Caden approach. Maybe she could feign illness and go home early. Not that she would have much trouble with that, as just the smell of the meat cooking on the grill was causing her stomach to turn. The thought of lying to Caden sent another massive wave of nausea through her, but---but she didn't know if she could tell him the truth.

Josef was busy chasing Eloise Midgen around the grassy area, and Maggie held back her laughter as the girl's father crawled under a picnic table after the two almost four-year-olds. She ducked her head to catch her own daughter staring up at her with wide eyes, nearly begging to go run around as well, but Maggie held Adeline tightly to her lap. The baby gave her every excuse not to walk around and mingle at the low-key event, and Maggie was going to use her to her own advantage for as long as she could.

Since Geoff's banishment from the league and the controversy his captainship of the Germany team created, there had been quite the sour taste in Maggie's mouth about the sport she used to love so much. There was a time where no sort of media coverage could bruise her ego, but the past few years had certainly done a number on her. Much of it was her own fault, decisions that she'd made were not always the best, but a person grew weary when time after time after time she had to suck up her feelings and simply deal with the ramifications.

Maggie's guilt over knowing about Geoff's gambling problems and not doing much but scolding him about them ate at her daily. She had no idea where her brother was, she hadn't spoken to him since a run in in New York, and all she feared was that those men who'd come after him had finally gotten their man. And--and the league still had questions, and her parents still had questions, and---the preseason was starting and she didn't feel ready, she didn't feel like doing much of anything, and---and---

She winced, Adeline whacking her straight in the nose as if she knew her mother was off on one of her mental ramblings.

"Thank you, sweetie," Maggie said, rubbing her nose. She watched as her husband approached, an upside-down Josef in tow.

Lottie didn’t need much to keep herself entertained. She quite enjoyed people watching and an event such as this was perfect for such a thing. She had been busy the last week out searching for jobs, determined to find something by the time Jake had returned to England (that and her father had banned her from wallowing in the house during business hours). Jake. Sighing into her drink, Lottie rested her chin in her hand. Jake Bexley. She wasn’t quite sure how to take their last parting, but it left her with a similar feeling that walking away from him at Kings Cross did. Everything was different, but some how seemed the same. When was the last time she wrote anything not related to the gossip she gathered from the WWN? Yet here she was writing letters-- wasting time she should be spent looking for a job researching---

“Excuse me, Miss?” Charlotte startled at the sudden voice interrupting her thoughts. The man standing opposite where she was sitting offered her a smile, and she frowned not feeling in the mood to have some stranger flirt with her. “Is anyone sitting here?” he asked, and before she could open her mouth to answer, he was sitting across from her, polite smile still on his face.

How incredibly rude. “Apparently, you are,” Lottie bit out, fighting to remain pleasant. Who did he think he was?

“How lucky am I to have spotted you here.” It irritated her how comfortable this man had made himself sitting across from her. Charlotte raised a brow, she had no idea who this person was. Or why he was sitting here speaking to her. “Oh. Sorry,” he continued when she didn’t say anything, “I tend to get ahead of myself at times. Name’s Andrew Finwick . One of the great minds at Snitch!

“Am I suppose to be impressed?” She asked dully, returning her attention to the crowd. She was sure she had spotted Lynch talking to someone gossip worthy.

Andrew laughed. “No, I suppose not. Its always refreshing to run into people who aren’t impressed mere titles. I have to admit though, you had me impressed.”

Charlotte blinked, her skin prickling with goosebumps. “I’m sorry, but I’m not interested.”

“You haven’t even heard me out.”

“I don’t need to, there’s-- I’ve-- I’m not interested in frivolous dates at the moment.”

He laughed again and this time she felt offended. “I’m not trying ask you out on a date. I’m trying to offer you a job. Well at least an interview, they’d have my head if I just offered you a job straight out and not even know your name.”

She froze, unsure of what she just heard. Her attention finally back on the man sitting across from her. It made no sense whatsoever. Lottie didn’t even bother trying to apply at Snitch! after her disastrous interview with The Prophet, certain she had been blacklisted from any sort of media outlet. “Excuse me?” she breathed, not daring to hope she heard correctly.

“I was sitting a couple rows behind you at the World Cup final. Overheard a bit of your running commentary you were giving your boyfriend. It was spectacular, we could use someone like you at Snitch! now that we have a radio show.” Lottie just stared at him unable to think of anything to say. He shifted in his seat slightly. “Though I suppose I could be wrong…?”

“I-- Jake isn’t my boyfriend,” she said weakly, not sure why she was bothering to correct him. It wasn’t like the innocent mistake bothered her, but it was the only response she could think of.

“So it was you then?”

“Maybe? I mean, I suppose I was going on a bit to Jake, but sometimes the commentators just use the same stats every game, it gets boring.”

Andrew just grinned holding out a card to her. “Exactly. How about you come by the office after the weekend. See if you can impress some of my colleagues.” She took the card, studying it. It could easily been a ruse. How hard would it be to pretend to work for the company hosting the party.

“I don’t know…” Charlotte flipped the card over in her hand. It seemed to easy. Too good to be true.

“Miss---” Andrew trailed off.

“Sweeting,” she offered hesitantly, to which he just chuckled again and murmured something about of course it is.

“Well Miss Sweeting, what’s the worse that could happen?” He asked standing from his seat. “Enjoy the party. I hope I see you Monday.”
