Mandy was born one of six children to a magical couple who is obviously still very much in love, even to this day. Those close to the Brocklehursts often like to joke that you would think they would know about the various methods of preventing babies, but the truth is that their large family has always been a very happy one and Mandy grew up surrounded by people who loved and adored her, which is never a bad thing.
It was no surprise when she received her Hogwarts letter at 11. Being a pureblood, it was something expected and Mandy had been showing little signs of magic since the age of three, anyway. It was no surprise, either, when she was sorted into Ravenclaw. Even at 11, Mandy was already a bookworm and her frequent explorations around the neighborhood often got her into trouble. There were Muggles and Magical folks alike in their neighborhood and that fascinated Mandy. She wanted to know why they were different. She wanted to know everything about the Muggle things that she didn't have growing up. Their sports, especially, fascinated her and she begged and pleaded her way into a large collection of Muggle books long before her own schooling began.
Hogwarts was amazing for her. It was beyond anything her parents or older siblings could have described and she was fascinated. Mandy quickly soaked up everything Hogwarts had to offer her, excelling in many of her classes and working hard to keep up in the others. As a magical child, she'd grown up loving Quidditch, of course, but she was blown away by her first flying lesson all the same. Mandy was a natural on a broom and she was instantly taken with the freeing feeling being on a broomstick gave her. There was nothing like it.
After being stuck as an alternate her second year, Mandy finally nabbed an open Chaser position in her third. Ecstatic owls home soon followed, along with begging her parents for her very own broom. They relented, though she was forced to spend her holidays working it off in her dad's shop. She didn't mind, though. It was easily one of her favorite places to spend her time, anyway.
As her life at Hogwarts continued, she started to think about the future. She thought about trying to play Quidditch professionally. She thought about going into research. She thought about opening a shop of her own in Hogsmeade or Diagon. It was the last of those that she ended up settling on, opening a bookshop in Hogsmeade first and a few years later branching out to a second in Diagon Alley.
Before she could do that, though, she had to get through her seventh year. Mandy isn't proud to say that she's one of those students who ran when the final battle started. She was never a part of the DA and she didn't feel remotely brave enough to stay and fight. It's something she feels a little guilt about, even now, though she reasons that her staying couldn't have possibly affected the outcome, so she tries not to dwell on it.
She should have stayed and fought, but when the attack on Hogwarts began, Mandy first cowered in the Great Hall and then she ran. She has never been very brave and while it may not have been the right thing to do, running felt like the smart thing to do. She got out through the tunnels, like so many others, but a part of her will always feel a measure of guilt for the ones who didn't get out, the ones who gave their lives during that battle.
Nevertheless, life went on for Mandy in the aftermath. She grieved deeply for Terry, but even that passed and as selfish as it sounds, her life continued much as it had. It was a much happier Hogwarts she returned to as she finished up her seventh year classes and sat for her N.E.W.T.s, even if she did miss Terry's presence in the common room. Life went on, it seemed, even after the loss of one of your closest friends.
She'd thought about pursuing a career in research or applying to work at the Ministry. Mandy had even entertained thoughts of trying out for a pro Quidditch team. She'd thought of opening up a bookstore in Hogsmeade or Diagon. In the end, she applied for a position at the Ministry. It was nothing lucrative - just an entry-level research position, but she enjoyed it.
Work aside, Mandy began an on/off relationship with a boy she'd known at Hogwarts not long after the war ended and they left school. Mandy had always considered Michael one of her closest friends... and more. Her heart had been torn between him and Terry Boot, both of whom she'd dated off and on their past few years of school. With Terry lost in the final battle, it was easy to cling to a reunion with Michael. They resumed their relationship once more and when he proposed she happily accepted.
It wasn't an easy marriage, though. Mandy was working long hours at the shop, Michael was spending too much of his time in training at St. Mungo's and when it came down to deciding to start a family, they found themselves unable to conceive. It all snowballed together and resulted with a fair many shouting matches between them. They tried to sort things out time and again, but after 10 years of marriage, they went their separate ways.
Mandy lost not only her husband in the divorce, but also one of her very best friends. To say she was heartbroken would be an understatement. She became quiet and withdrawn in the months that followed, frequently overanalyzing her own actions and wondering if she could have said or done anything to salvage the relationships.
Now, a couple of years later, Mandy is just starting to get back out there. She's been on a few dates recently, though not with anyone special. She's also recently started to pursue adoption. Mandy desperately wants a child of her own and she's decided to make it happen rather than waiting to Prince Charming to come along, sweep her off her feet and give her the family she desires.
PERSONALITY. LIST AT LEAST 5 TRAITS THAT DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTER; EXPLAIN WHY.
OUTDOORSY - Mandy loves the outdoors. She loves being out in nature and she enjoys activities like camping or spending the day at the beach. She's much more at home outside than in.
FRIENDLY - Mandy is the sort of person to say hello to a perfect stranger, to strike up a conversation with someone she doesn't know well or doesn't have much in common with.
ATHLETIC - Mandy played Quidditch in school and even though she no longer plays, except maybe in a quick pick up game with old teammates and friends, she makes an effort to keep in shape. She goes flying now and then and goes for a run every morning.
OPTIMISTIC - Even when life is getting her down, Mandy is always one to try and look at the bright side of things. She always hopes for the best and expects things to work out, somehow, despite her fears. Rather than focusing on what is wrong in her life, she tries to be focused on what she has to be thankful for.
BOOKISH - If her occupation and former house don't make it obvious, Mandy loved books. She'll read pretty much anything and everything she can get her hands on and she's always looking for new material. She's fascinated by new things and subjects.
CHEERFUL - Mandy has a cheery, bubbly disposition and excepting the period directly after her split from Michael, it is rare to find her without a smile on her face. It is unusual to find her without a smile on her face,
LIKES TO COOK - Mandy loves cooking and baking. She's not a gourmet or anything, but she enjoys trying out new recipes and she's often baking batches of cakes and biscuits to send to friends or bring to her various neighbors. She loves to eat, too, so it's a good thing she does all that running to work off the calories in those sweets.
LIKES -- Literature, running, Quidditch, nature/camping. DISLIKES -- Cramped spaces, licorice, empty bookshelves. GOALS -- To keep her shops successful and raise a big family of her own. FEARS -- Never managing to have a family of her own. She's terrified being unable to conceive with Michael was her fault and that her attempts at adoption won't work out either. WHAT THEY ARE BEST AT -- Charms & History were here best subjects. WHAT THEY ARE WORST AT -- Transfiguration & Divination were her worst subjects. YOUR CHARACTER'S MOTTO, OR A QUOTE THAT YOU FEEL REPRESENTS THEM WELL -- "I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion." -- Henry David Thoreau
Mandy has always been the friendly, bubbly sort of girl most people find easy to get on with. Her curious nature made it obvious why she was sorted into Ravenclaw, but she was always friendly with those outside her house, too, having a friendly smile for any who might approach her. She loved to socialize and still would to this day if there was much of it to be done. Mandy is very much a people person. She likes being up on the latest gossip and trends.
Rather than being one of those simpering girly girls, Mandy is a big lover of nature. Camping, hiking, etc are some of her favorite past times and she hates being cooped up indoors for long. She loves flying for the freedom it gives her. She likes the weightless feeling she gets on a broom and the way the wind whips through her hair. It's been a long time since Mandy has had a chance to play a game of Quidditch and she misses it dearly.
Mandy is a loyal, understanding friend to have. A Ravenpuff at heart, she values her friends and family and there is little she wouldn't do for them. She's not a very patient sort, but she's always willing to listen to a friend in need and she likes to think she gives pretty good advice, especially in matters of the heart. Her mother writes trashy romance novels, so of course she's an expert at such things!
CONNECTIONS & PLOT. Are you filling a wanted storyline? If so, list it below in addition to providing two connections of your own to be added to the page. If you aren’t filling a connection, please provide at least three. There is no maximum.
* Phoenix Housing Tenant. This was a wanted storyline that I am filling by having Mandy live conveniently on the floor below Stewart and Andy. :)
* The one who got away. Mandy dated this guy on and off during school, and in the aftermath of the final battle, they found themselves together again and soon married. The marriage failed miserably between their careers getting in the way and an inability to ceoceive when they were ready to start a family. At some point, she told herself it just wasn't meant to be, but if we're being honest, there's a part of her that still has feelings for him. Michael Corner.
* The close girlfriends. Mandy has always made friends easily, but she feels closest to the four girls she shared a dorm room with. They aren't all here today, of course, and she still mourns the loss of Padma in the war, but she's grateful for the others. Morag MacDougal, Lisa Turpin & Su Li.
* The employees. Mandy opened her first shop in Hogsmeade several months after the war ended and a few years later was able to branch out to a second store in Diagon Alley. These are the people who work for/with her in either shop.
* Fellow Merchants. I imagine that Mandy would form a friendship with the other shopkeepers in Hogsmeade/Diagon. She would go out of her way to meet her "neighbors" and be friendly with them.
* The family... I have been intentionally vague about her siblings to allow for more flexibility if anyone wants to pick them up, but Mandy has 3 brothers and 2 sisters. The Brocklehurts are a very close family, so I would love for some or all of her siblings to be brought into the game.
