Samantha felt herself numbly walking through the streets of Istanbul. The afternoon was a flood of images and scenes playing over and over in her mind. And no matter how much she wanted her mind to stop going back to the stadium, to catching up with Thomas and then hearing him--seeing him, and everything that was there, she couldn't stop her mind from drifting there. She was a firm believer in the idea that there were places and moments that tied ones being to a place. She had strong roots in home, and over the past year she'd found strong ties to new places; Thailand, Norway, Egypt...Scotland, England. And now Istanbul. That tiny crossroads a block and a half from the Eurocup stadium. This was supposed to be a lighthearted trip, something surprising and fun and--it wasn't supposed to turn out like this. This was supposed to be a place that she felt tied to in a good way, not...this.

She bit back the tears as they began to grow fresh in her eyes again. It had taken so long for it to feel like their relationship was a normal, functioning one. She was always busy, he was always busy, and somewhere in the hustle and bustle of their lives they fell into a groove. Samantha always trusted that those stolen moments they had would be enough to keep things tied together, no matter how far apart or how long time separated them. And maybe it was foolish of her to fall for a Quidditch player. She knew what Victoria had gone through, she knew the risks of it. But was there ever anything normal about her relationship with Thomas? She wanted to say yes but...part of her wanted to argue that it wasn't the normal definition of normal.

The feeling of being in the city was overwhelming. She felt as if everything was closing in on her as the realization of the entire situation hit her. His words came pouring back to her and as she walked back in the direction of her hotel she started piecing them together.

What are you doing here?

I ran into someone from my past on New Year's and it's got me twisted.

I'm trying to be honest.

I haven't seen her in a long time and...I felt
crazed. I thought that I was over...

I don't think I'm being fair to you.

It's not you...

I just need some time, I'm sorry it had to be like this.

She felt her breath becoming shallow as her steps down the street slowed mid-thought. Oh God, she couldn't---she couldn't breathe, she was stuck in a foreign city with--with him and--and she didn't want to think it but it felt like the words he used. Had he gone back to his ex? Was he--no, he would never do that....but she never thought things would end so abruptly between them, either.

She squeezed her eyes shut, thinking of the only thing that grounded her, that kept her from falling apart time and time again. The air shifted, there was the scent of the sea and when she opened her eyes she was in the middle of a deserted square; the Ephesus ruins. Being in an old, ancient place seemed to be the only logical solution to Samantha's mind. She sunk down to a nearby step, the crumbling stone grounding her as she began to sob.
