personality
DETAILED PERSONALITY: At first impression, Hermione is intelligent and a bit of a know-it-all. She doesn't mean to be bossy and overbearing, but it tends to be how she comes across. Really, she's just always felt a need to prove herself and to be the best. Always having the answer - and speaking up loudly when she does - is just one way she has of showing that she's capable of anything.

In reality, Hermione is bossy, determined, brilliant, logical, curious and downright fierce. Once you have earned her friendship, it's yours for good. Sometimes her fierce temper will get in the way, but it never lasts forever. She cares too much for the people in her life to stay angry forever and she's not likely to completely give up on a friend even when they have wronged her.

It's probably not obvious, but Hermione is a little bit insecure. It's nothing her parents ever said or did, but she's always have an insatiable need to prove herself - to study harder, work harder, be better. When you add that to her natural curiosity, you get a girl who is virtually a walking encyclopedia.

Hermione isn't your typical girly girl at all. Oh, she definitely has girl emotions and a tendency to act quite like a girl, but she's not good with clothes or fashion or makeup. She's that girl most boys overlook, or so she thought until she caught Viktor Krum's eye. All the same, Viktor and Ronald are the only boys who ever expressed much interest and that's perfectly fine with her. She's never really wanted anyone but Ron, anyway.

FIRST IMPRESSION: Bossy, know-it-all.
LIKES: Sweets, books, Ron.
DISLIKES: Cruelty towards animals and creatures, inequality, bullying.
HABITS: She bites her nails.
HOBBIES: Reading, knitting.

appearance
DETAILED APPEARANCE: Hermione's most distinguishing feature is her extremely curly, extremely unruly hair. She's of average height and build, slender but not athletic in the slightest. She favors casual clothing and her appearance tends to be a little mussed. Living in the dungeons doesn't exactly make it easy to stay well-groomed.

HEIGHT: Around 5'6"
WEIGHT: About 130 lbs
EYES: Brown
HAIR: Brown and bushy.
TYPICAL SCENT: Natural with a hint of light floral perfume.
TYPICAL STYLE: Very casual. Hermione favors jeans and t-shirts.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Bushy, unruly hair. She had buck teeth when she was younger, but that was corrected after she had to have her teeth shrunk when she was hit by a hex.
PLAYED BY: Tamsin Egerton (first choice), Anne Hathaway (second choice)

history

DETAILED HISTORY: Hermione was born the only child of Edward and Rosalie Granger in a quiet little neighborhood Hampstead. As their first and only child, she was definitely a bit spoiled and doted upon. Between her parents and grandparents, she was never without attention or affection and she certainly grew up knowing how it felt to be truly loved.

Her parents were a little strict with her, particularly about her diet, but that was to be expected from a pair of dentists. Hermione was never allowed to eat sweets or do anything else that would be bad for her teeth. It wasn't something she really missed, though. She'd sneak to occasional sweets from friends at school as she grew older, but she was perfectly okay with following her parents' wishes most of the time.

From the time she was a young child, Hermione was curious and adventurous. She was a stickler for the rules, but that didn't stop her from trying and learning everything she could. She took plenty of art, dance and music lessons as a small child and she spent her spare time exploring the neighborhood as far as she was allowed and reading every book she could get her hands on. She was 5 when she got her first little chemistry set and other educational toys followed shortly after. Her parents wanted to encourage her sharp mind and they had the means to do so.

There were odd little quirks that were quickly dismissed both by Hermione and her parents. They told themselves it was merely a vivid imagination when Hermione started to show her first signs of magical ability and Hermione didn't argue otherwise. She was sure there was something more to it, but she didn't want her parents to think she was mad or something. She was sharp enough to recognize that people who thought they could do magic usually ended up locked up.

Life went on as normal, but Hermione started to read everything about magic she could get her hands on. It wasn't much in the Muggle world, of course, but it brought her some degree of comfort to feel that she was working towards learning what was going on. Then right after her eleventh birthday, she received her Hogwarts letter. It should have been a shock, but Hermione felt relieved more than anything. Here was an explanation for the things she could do. Rather than wait until her first term was about to start, Hermione went to London as soon as she could to get her school things and spent a great deal of her spare time in the coming months reading everything she could about Hogwarts and about the magical world in general.

Hogwarts was full of more adventure than one should properly expect in a lifetime. Hermione didn't exactly make friends right away - she was too much of a know-it-all and very bossy - but after they rescued her from a troll in the girls' bathroom, it was impossible not to make friends with Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley. Before the end of the term, she would consider them her very best mates, especially after the three of them worked together to save the sorceror's stone from falling into the wrong hands.

The adventures only grew more and more dangerous as the years wore on and Hermione was consistently in fear for her own life as well as Harry and Ron's. She was terrified something would happened to one or all of them, she was terrified Voldemort would come back. She didn't let that fear control, her, though, even as things did happen to them all. She found herself petrified by a basilisk, Harry nearly had his soul sucked out by Dementors, Ron broke his leg and learned his beloved pet was actually a Death Eater in disguise. Scariest by far, though, was when Harry's name was pulled from the Goblet of Fire. Not only did she have to contend with the likelihood that Harry would get himself killed, but she was caught in the middle of a stupid fight between him and Ron. It was completely ridiculous.

Hermione was appalled when no one wanted to believe Voldemort was back after Harry came back from through the maze with Cedric's body. After that, after Harry going to trial for protecting himself and his cousin from Demontors and that awful Umbridge woman being sicced on Hogwarts, something needed to be done. Harry teaching them and their peers defense was only logical and she set to work finding a way to keep it all secret. Soon enough, Dumbledore's Army was born. Hermione had always been a little weaker in Defense Against the Dark Arts than her other subjects, but thanks to Harry she got a lot better at it. Good enough to survive the skirmish at the Department of Mysteries, anyway. Somehow, she even managed to sit O.W.L.s and do reasonably well in the middle of all of it, too.

In her 6th year, Hermione was determined to keep up in her studies - N.E.W.T.s were right around the corner! She was just as determined to help Harry, too, of course. It made her angry when he constantly did better than her in Potions, but especially because he was using that stupid Half Blood Prince's book. She was honestly worried for him and who could blame her? In the end, she'd like to have said she told him so, but she held her tongue. After all, when all was said and done that year, Dumbledore was gone and the contents of a book hardly seemed important in comparison. She also was able to forget how angry she'd been with Ron all year in the aftermath of all of that. She'd been hopelessly jealous of Lavender when he'd snogged her, realizing consciously for perhaps the first time that she wanted it to be him even though she'd been entertaining thoughts of more than friendship with him since fourth year. None of that mattered in the end, though. It was Ron's hand she wanted to hold at Dumbledore's funeral and that was all that really felt important at the time.

It was a given that she'd be at Harry and Ron's side the following year as they hunted Horcruxes. Before she could do that, though, she had to do the hardest thing she's ever done to this day - wipe her parents memories of her and send them away. It was hard to do, but she knew it was necessary. Shortly after that, she apparated to the Burrow - it was convenient being of age to do so - and it felt better being with Ron and his family. By the time it was time to collect Harry from the Dursleys, she was better able to focus on what needed to be done. She spent the interim weeks planning and preparing, packing away the things they would need. When she and the boys found themselves on the run, she was prepared.

When she looks back on it from today, Hermione isn't entirely sure how they did it all - stayed alive, escaped Death Eaters time and again, destroyed the Horcruxes. She's not sure how she kept it together when it seemed as though Harry was dead. She's not even sure why she picked that moment in the Room of Requirement to kiss Ron, but she's never for a second regretted doing so. Hermione and Ron have had a rocky road, but she hasn't regretted a moment of it - except for maybe all the times she's flipped out on him over something stupid and nearly lost him as a result. No matter what cold feet she gets from time to time, she couldn't be happier that they're about to be married.

writing samples
FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE:
These are samples from another game. I hope that's okay!

I'm am not overly fond of how drafty the castle is this time of year. I'm going to have to find the time to knit myself a sweater. Perhaps some warmer socks, as well.

[Private to Ronald Weasley]
I know it's been some time since I've been in touch, but I do think we should speak privately and soon. Let's compare our schedules and see when we can find the time for a private conversation.

[Private to Violet Boardman]
How are you adjusting, dear? I know it can be a bit unsettling when you first arrive, so don't be afraid to ask me any questions you have. You want to be careful about what you say or ask in front of them.

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: In-Progress thread at another game.
