Who: Sanit and Jolene-Lucille
What: She has good news
Where: Their place.
When: Monday after Santi gets off work.

Jolene checked her appearance over in the mirror one more time before she headed back into the kitchen to check on dinner. Today had started out like any other day... she had gotten up early, fixed herself and her husband breakfast, had nearly bitten his head off when he'd asked her to pass the orange juice, and had headed in to work. Now, the shortness of her temper was, admittedly, a little strange. But she had simply acredited it to the strain she was under lately at work and had thought nothing of it, much as she had with the strange food cravings she'd been having lately. But when the sicknesses started about two days ago, she had been forced to reevaluate just what the heck was going on with her. At the suggestion of one of her co-workers, she had gone during her break this afternoon and purchased a pregnancy test. And it was positive.

It was now almost six hours later and she still couldn't shake the slight shock she felt whenever she thought about the implications of what that meant. She was going to have a baby. Santi's baby. A giddy laugh escaped her, causing Ares to perk her head and tilt it inquisitvely towards her master. "A baby," she mused aloud, and twisted away from the stove to meet the dog's gaze and smile excitedly. "Can you believe that?" Yes, she still tended to talk to the dog whenever she was alone in the house. Sometimes she'd slip and even do it when Santi was around. Old habits died hard, she supposed... she had been living alone for a while, afterall.

At the sound of the front door closing, her smile widened; she self-consciously flicked her fingers against the blonde curls that had been gathered at the base of her neck to ensure that it was in place and took a deep, steadying breath before she hurried out to meet him in the hallway. She had changed from her work clothes into a comfortable pair of high-wasted flare jeans and a fitted ivory blouse with loose sleeves, and as she moved to catch her husband in an enthusiastic embrace her bare feet were soundless against the floor. She ignored Ares as she insistantly headbutted the back of her knees as if to say 'my turn', instead wrapping her arms around her husband before he could even take his coat off. "Hi!" she chirped breathlessly, all nervous energy. "How was your day? I missed you..." And she kissed him, not even slightly aware of how extreme her emotions were; she ran either extremely hot or extremely cold these days, with very little in between. Poor Santi.

To be honest, Santiago was becoming more than cautious when it came to behaving around his wife. Normally he could read her perfectly, it had been like that since the very beginning of their relationship, but these last few weeks? Ay deus, he had no idea what was going on. Jolene was never one emotion for long, and he could never spot what was going to trigger the shift. Santiago was very good at dealing with situations he understood, but his wife was becoming a very scary mystery.

Which was definitely the reason behind his bringing home a bouquet of flowers. She could not hate flowers, right? That would save him for a little bit, sim? Unless---ay, what if she was allergic to these? That would send her off on maybe a crying spell, or completely frustrated with the fact that he did not know everything about her and---

---he should stop being scared of his wife!

Santiago gladly accepted her kiss, however, and pulled the flowers from behind his back. Okay, this was starting off well! Not much could really go wrong when there was a kiss and flowers involved, he truly believed.

A squeal of surprise was echoed by the dog's impatient barking as she unwrapped her arms from around his shoulders to accept the beautiful bouquet. Indeed, tears did spring to her eyes but luckily for him it was not because she was allergic. "You got me flowers?" Her voice was soft with disbelief, an unspoken 'awwwww' lingering in the timbre of her words. Swiping her misty eyes with the back of her free hand, she stepped away from him and only narrowly avoided tripping over Ares as she hurried away from him to fetch a vase. "Santi, they're beautiful. Really. Thankyou."

He was such a good husband. How could she have possibly been so mad at him this morning for leaving the bathroom light on? Setting the vase under the sink, she filled it and set the flowers in the middle of the table, looking up from her task to beam at him brilliantly as he came in. "I'm making that chicken you like... remember, the kind we had your mother's? She gave me the recipe." She was practically bubbling with the urge to tell him, but reminded herself that she wanted it to be a surprise. A nice surprise.

"Really?"

That was---very much a surprise! Santiago's eyes lit up as he followed Jolene into the kitchen, leaning over the stove to see (and smell!) for himself. Well! Well then! This was definitely a good start! Maybe his wife had begun to see that she had been absolutely crazy the past few weeks, and was trying to apologize?

Noooo, no, he could not think like that. Jolene was not being crazy, she was just stressed out from work! And...and adjusting to being a...wife? This new life? Deus, he did not know, he just knew that it was not fair to think of his wife as crazy, because! That was! Not...nice.

"It smells great!" he said excitedly, but not too excitedly, to stop himself from sounding sarcastic. Which he was not! Santiago grinned, crossing his arms, "Very exciting, amor!"

"It is," she agreed, and then just as quickly as she had decided to surprise him with the news over dinner, she decided that she couldn't possibly wait that long. Sinking her teeth into her bottom lip, she began to fidget right there where she stood, fingers twiddling awkwardly around the hem of her shirt. "You know, the excitement doesn't end there... I actually have another surprise for you." This was said very conversationally, only the sly look she offered from beneath her lashes giving her away.

She was absolutely, ridiculously happy, but suddenly she was gripped with an unexpected jolt of panic. What if Santi wasn't happy? Afterall, they were newlyweds... they hadn't really discussed the whole children situation. At least, not very seriously. What if this was too soon? Oh dear. Looks like it was time for another sudden mood swing. Chewing anxiously at her bottom lip, she flailingly gestured him towards one of the chairs. "Why don't you sit. That would be better."

Oh no. Ohhhh no. Wait. What was he worrying about? Surprises were good, you did not say 'I have a surprise for you' when it was the announcement of divorce. No! No, so this was going to be a good thing, but why did she seem so nervous now? A Jolene surprise...maybe she had broken something? That was not really a surprise, more of an admittance (or a daily occurrence). So...what.

Deus. He felt like he was going through the mood swings Jolene had been suffering through the past few weeks. He had been nervous and immediately excited, and now back to wary. Wary enough that he watched Jolene's eyes for a few seconds before lowering himself into the nearest seat. Santiago needed a few moments to prepare himself.

"Okay. Sitting."

As soon as he announced his readiness, she dragged the nearest chair a bit closer to him and then plopped into it. Reaching across the small distance still between them, she grabbed one of his hands and cradled it between her own, being sure to look him directly in the eye for what she was about to say. Merlin, why was she so nervous all of a sudden?! As though sensing her discomfort, Ares barked at her from the kitchen, an act that earned her a sharp 'Sh!' before she returned her focus to her husband.

"Well... I know that I've been a bit difficult lately," she began, her voice low and sympathetic. "Well, maybe a lot difficult. I just haven't been feeling myself and so the other day I mentioned it to someone at the office and she said that it didn't sound like anything serious but then someone else overheard and she said..."

She knew she was blabbering. She just couldn't help it. It was a nervous tick that would never, ever go away. But she didn't want to overload him with information, so she stopped herself mid-sentence with an apologetic wince and a shake of her head. Taking a deep breath, she squeezed his hand reaassuringly and continued.

"Sorry. But um... well, I suppose I should just get right to the point, right? So that... is what I will do. Right now."

If she had been nervous before, she felt like she was about to throw up, now. "Santi... I'm..."

Count to three, say a prayer... She met his gaze unblinkingly, and as the words came out she couldn't help the awe-struck, sheepish smile that curled the corners of her lips.

"...I'm pregnant."
