Her hand twisted around the cap of her mascara, making sure the black liquid substance covered the brush that was inside. Bringing it to her eyes, she applied it to her long lashes, and then placed the tube of makeup back into the drawer it had come from. Turning her gaze back to the mirror, she took a moment to stare at herself. It wasn’t because she was being self involved, not this time anyway, but because she was once again reflecting on how the last couple of months had been for her, her family, and the rest of the wizarding world. How much more pain did the world have to endure before things could go back to being the way they used to be? A sigh escaped her lips at the thought, reaching down to grab the tube of gloss that needed to be applied to them. Once that was done, she rose to her feet and shuffled over to sit on the edge of her bed. She grabbed the brown heeled boots that were sitting nearby, rolling her jeans down over them before standing to adjust the flattering scoop-neck sweater she was wearing.

Going for her wand, she made sure to grab her jacket and her scarf before apparating to the location that had been chosen by Darren. She couldn’t lie and say she wasn’t surprised when her boyfriend had asked her to meet him there, without having a reason. Or, she didn’t think there was a reason. Sure, Christmas was approaching, but she wasn’t expecting him to do anything like this.

Arriving at the bridge, Devon looked around and noticed she was alone…or, she seemed to be alone. Her hands slid into her pockets, looking around as she approached the edge of the structure she was standing on. Leaning on it, she looked over into the water that was rippling beneath it. Yet again, she began thinking about everything that had been weighing on her mind before she felt a hand touch her waist. She jumped a bit and turned around to face Darren, her mouth curving up into a smile at the sight of him, leaning her back against the side of the bridge; her arms wrapped around him, pulling him closer.

“Hello, stranger..."

So, he was a little late. Darren didn't know how long she had been standing there, nor did he really care. This was an overgrown park in the middle-of-nowhere Muggle Ireland. She was safe and really, that was his only concern.

Hands going to the old stained concrete of the bridge railing at either side of her waist, Darren leaned some of his weight into Devon. He kept his eyes on hers and didn't take-in a good look at the rest of her. He didn't need to; he already knew every inch of her and it didn't much matter to him what she chose to wear. Breathing in a slow huff of the cool air, he simply stared into her eyes. She was undoubtedly confused and even a touch sad.

Darren slowly blinked. His arms sidled to be tight around her. "I'm going to teach you something," he told her before shifting to drop his forehead near hers. Their temples grazed. "Think you can handle it?" he said against her ear as her hair tickled his nose.

The way he looked at her with those excruciatingly green eyes of his made her completely forget how cold she was just a moment ago. The way his arms wrapped around her made her feel safer and calmer than she had in a while. Her arms moved to slide around his neck, her heart beat picking up speed as he leaned down towards her. All of the other relationships she had been a part of in the past were nothing compared to what she had with Darren. Sure, it was far from perfect, and there had been plenty of men who she should have stayed with, who would have given her everything she wanted in a heartbeat…but you couldn’t choose who you fell in love with. This man, this…horribly flawed man, he had her heart. Sometimes she didn’t think he realized that, because he hadn’t been very careful with it in the past…but things seemed to be getting better. She didn’t know if her heart could handle any more pain, considering it had just been dealt a nearly lethal blow when she heard the news about her parents…

Her eyes stared deeply into his, though they shut as he quietly spoke into her ear. She swallowed roughly, keeping herself as close to him as she could be, speaking softly. “I don’t think you would let me get into anything you didn’t think I could handle…”

Darren sighed nasally and shifted his feet. Drawing back, he brought a hand up to cup Devon's jaw. He absently rubbed a thumb against her cheek. His forehead settled against hers. Darren's throat bobbed as he swallowed.

"But I've done that," he said pointedly. His eyes met hers only to dart away quickly in shame. "I've left you more than once. I can't understand why you trust me."

She leaned into his touch, her arms sliding down so one of her hands was on his shoulder, while the other reached up to rest over his. His words made her shut her eyes, and she let out a soft sigh at the thought, opening them to meet his eyes, just in time to see them turn away from her. She blinked, still focused on him even though he was doing his best to avoid her. “…no…what you do, is run away whenever you don’t think I can handle something. This is the first time you’ve actually asked if I thought I could.”

Moving back from him enough to see him, she placed a hand on his cheek, using the other to lift up his chin to make sure he was looking at her. “…you can’t understand why I trust you…but I can’t explain why I do. I just-…I don’t know…” She paused, biting at her lower lip for a moment before she continued, bringing her hands down to rest on his chest. “…do you not think I should? Trust you, I mean…”

She felt like they had had this conversation before…

Her touches didn't faze Darren. He was too wrapped up in his own head for them to be comforting. He numbly watched her fingers, until they lifted his chin.

This felt silly. Bearing his soul was not his point in coming here, but his mouth was getting away from him. He always had doubts. He couldn't help himself. He could barely put up with himself, so how Devon could bear it all? He had no idea.

"No," he replied with a slow shake of his head in defeat. "I don't." He tilted his face into her touch and met her eyes, again. "But I want you to trust me."

It wasn’t exactly the answer she was expecting…and her eyes reflected that. What was this? Why had he asked her to come to the bridge? Was he trying to lead into something, by telling her he didn’t think she should trust him? Had something happened? These questions ran through her mind in a split moment, only stopping when she felt him move beneath her hand, glad to hear him continue so she could stop driving herself crazy. Sure, she was still wondering why she was there, and would be until he actually told her, but at least this wasn’t looking as bad as it did just seconds ago.

“…and I want to trust you, too…but I also want you to prove that I haven’t completely misplaced my trust in you…that I’m not a complete idiot, like everyone else seems to think I am for trusting you…even you, apparently.”

It hurt him to hear her call herself an "idiot." She wasn't an idiot, she was just... Well, he supposed this was the definition of unconditional love. He was simply too ignorant and avoidant to see it.

"That's why I brought you here," he told her softly, smiling for the first time.

She tilted her head a bit when he finally gave her some sort of hint as to why she was there. “…oh?” Her curiosity was eating away at her, but his smile made her do the same. It wasn’t often she got to see him smile anymore, since there wasn’t much for either one of them to smile about. Most of the time, if she didn’t look miserable it was because she was forcing herself to look happy. That was getting exhausting.

“Well then, what are you waiting for?” She asked with a smile that was genuine, but small.

Seeing the slight upturn of her lips gave Darren a little hope that he wasn't going to completely foul this up. There was a reason for them to be here, however archaic and silly it might be.

"I'm going to exasperate you, right now," he told her. Darren ran his lips together before he asked, with finality, "Do you trust me?"

The warning he gave her made her smirk again, but she listened intently as he repeated the question he had already asked. She paused for a moment, not because she needed to think about it, but because she wanted him to believe her when she said it. She wanted to make sure he noticed how she was looking at him, staring deep into his eyes as she said her answer with utmost sincerity. "...yes."
