.: Crush :.
“Who is that?”
Donovan nudged Rafe Kirke in the side to get his attention, rolling his eyes as the Gryffindor let out a dramatic
ow. The blonde rubbed at the new sore spot in his ribs as he looked around.
“Who’s who?”
“That girl over there.”
He tilted his chin as a way of pointing in the general direction of the blonde in the red and gold robes, knowing that if he used his hand it would just draw way too much attention. He remembered thinking she was pretty back when they were being sorted, but he was too anxious about which house he was going to be placed in to pay much attention to the name that had been called before she went to sit on the stool. She was even pretty with that ridiculous hat perched on her head.
“Who, Maggie Brand?”
Once again Rafe would get an elbow to the ribs, harder this time because he had said her name loud enough to get her attention, causing Donovan to quickly turn his attention down to the potions textbook that was sprawled out in front of him. He dared to lift his stormy blue eyes from the pages to see if she was still looking over at him, thankful to see that she had gone back to talking to her friends. Letting out a breath of relief that he hadn’t realized he was holding in, he looked over to see that Rafe was once again rubbing at his side, hunched over.
“I think you’ve caused internal bleeding…” he moaned, causing Donovan to let out a snort. “You’ll live.” His voice lacked sympathy, knowing that Rafe had a pension for dramatics. He closed his book and gathered up his quills. “Oy, where are you off to? You going to tell Brand you fancy her?”This time he made sure his voice was low enough for his teasing to only be heard between the two of them, though he still protected his side from being attacked just in case.
“I don’t
fancy her,” the eleven year old replied, sounding a little more defensive than he had meant to. “Just think she’s pretty is all.” He tried to play it casual, but Rafe grinned at him.
“You
definitely fancy her. It’s adorable, really. You want me to tell her? I’ll write it in a note, and send it to her during Charms! ‘Dear Maggie, my friend Donovan fancies you. Do you fancy him? Please check yes, or no…’”
Donovan stood to his feet, his things under his arm, trying to ignore him. “I’m going to the library.”
“Why?”
“To find a spell that will
actually cause internal bleeding.”
Rafe went silent as he watched his friend get up and leave. “Very funny, Rookwood.” He called out to him, though when Donovan didn’t acknowledge him, Rafe swallowed thickly and gathered up his own things, chasing after him.
“Hey, I was just kidding! It was supposed to be
funny!”

.: Drunk :.
“He’s out cold.”
The words tumbled from Donovan Rookwood’s mouth through a grin that could not be contained, trying to get Gabriel and Rafe, who were both in hysterics on the couch, to stop laughing long enough to help him pick up Jonas from his living room floor. They had all gone out for a night of drinking, though they hadn’t expected the musician to try and keep up with his three friends, who were bigger and had a higher tolerance.
“I don’t think he’ll know where he is when he finally comes to,” Gabriel had stopped laughing long enough to form a sentence, wiping at his eyes which had started to tear up because of how funny he found the entire situation. Donovan snickered and nudged at him with his toe. “I’m more worried about what Kobe is going to do to us when she sees what we let happened to her husband,” he admitted, which finally got Rafe to stop laughing.
“Why do
we always get blamed?” He asked, brows raised as he got himself more comfortable on the corner of the couch. Donovan was just glad that Danielle had taken Cole to the Corner’s to spend the night with Rachel and the boys, since he was sure they would have woken both of them up by now. Donovan just crouched down next to Jonas before finally acknowledging Rafe’s question.
“Because
we actually know better. He’s like the kid in a candy store that eats everything without parental supervision.” He moved from his crouched position to take a seat on the chair, all of them still watching Jonas be unconscious, laying on his stomach in the middle of the living room.
“Was anyone keeping track of how many he had?” Gabriel asked, and Donovan laughed at the question. “I couldn’t even tell you how many
I had. I wasn’t aware we were supposed to be keeping a tally.” Gabriel smirked and then looked down at the sleeping Hufflepuff.
“He does look quite peaceful, doesn’t he?” Rafe asked, causing Donovan to let out a hum of agreement before they all went quiet for a moment. Donovan was the one who finally broke the silence.
“…am I the only one who is tempted to grab some ink and draw something on his face?”
Gabriel and Rafe both looked at him, the both of them grinning like idiots. Clearly they were on the same page, and Rafe finally found the strength to get up from the couch and run into the other room. “I’ll grab the quills!”

.: Working :.
"I give up."
Donovan groaned as he folded his arms over the stacks of parchment that he and Rose had been jotting down ideas on for the last hour and a half. It was almost Christmas, and he had this idea to do something really special for Danielle. They had been dating since their 4th year, and this would be the last big holiday they would be spending together while at Hogwarts. The whole problem was he had no idea what the hell he was supposed to get her, so he had asked her best friend to help him work on something. He didn't just want to get her a nice piece of jewelry, or perfume, since Dani wasn't the kind of girl who went crazy about those kind of things. She was a very practical person, but he found that practical people were usually the hardest to shop for because they didn't really
want many material things.
"No! No, these are all really good!"
The blonde assured him, picking up some of the ideas that had been pushed to the side because he thought they might either be incredibly lame, or too extravagant. It was hard, trying to find middle ground.
"But they're not
right," he said, though he didn't lift his head up from the table so his words were rather muffled as he spoke into the sleeve of his sweatshirt. When he finally did lift his head, he had his elbow bent, pushing the heel of his hand into his cheek.
"I think you're over thinking this too much," she said with raised brows, stretching her arms above her head. "She's going to love whatever you get her, you know." She smiled at him, and he sighed a bit before he leaned back, now rubbing his hands down his face, letting out another groan.
"I know I'm over thinking this..." he admitted, his hands finally dropping down so he could turn and look over at the Ravenclaw. "But have you met Dani?" A brow raised. "That girl over thinks what she wants for breakfast in the morning. I don't think I'm being completely impractical, here."
Rose snorted, knowing this to be true.
"Maybe you should
make her something," she suggested with a raise of one shoulder, almost as though she was throwing out the idea as a last resort. Donovan thought about the idea before he rolled his lips under, having a thought.
"I know she's always going on about how much she hates carrying loose parchment with her all the time. She takes such extensive notes, she's always losing pages in the halls..." his voice trailed off, and he looked over at Rose. "I should make her a book."
"...a book?" She asked, her head tilting slightly to the side as she looked at him with great interest.
"Well not a book to
read, but one she could write in. It would just take some leather and parchment. I would need to figure out how to bind them together of course, but it'd be something I know she would use every day."
"Oh, maybe you could have it engraved!" Rose suggested, and Donovan smiled over at her.
"I think we're onto something, Knightly."

.: Flustered :.
“Sit up straight, you’ll wrinkle your robes if you keep slouching.”
Augustus smirked down at Donovan, who was currently slumped down in his seat at the table his family had been assigned to. He was
bored, and his older brother had been spending most of the night flirting with every girl who gave him the time of day, leaving the youngest Rookwood to his own defenses. It was another fancy party that he hadn’t even wanted to go to, hosted by people he was sure his parents had never met before. He heard his father say something about this family being a ‘good connection’ or something like that, and they had dressed up both of their children in the finest robes they could afford (and they could afford the very best, of course) in an attempt to present themselves as the well-off, put together pureblood family that they were.
“I don’t get why I need to be here,” Donovan said with a sigh as he sat up in his seat, reaching out for the goblet of water that was in front of him.
“Because Mum and Dad are trying to introduce you to your future wife.”
Donovan rolled his eyes, thinking he was just messing with him, but when he turned and saw the look on his older brother’s face, his eyes widened.
“Wait, what?”
Augustus laughed and reached out to mess up Donovan’s hair, causing the 8 year old to immediately lift his arms in an attempt to fix it.
“They’re going to parade you around, and you’re going to be told how
precious you are, and one or two of them may pinch your cheeks,” and with that he reached out to demonstrate, further aggravating his younger brother. Again, the eldest Rookwood sibling would laugh before shaking his head and venturing off to find whatever girl he had been speaking too last. When Donovan was left alone, he reached up in another attempt to fix his hair, though he jumped when he heard his father calling out his name. He swallowed roughly and obeyed the instructions to come towards him, making sure to smooth down the front of his robes in case he
had accidently wrinkled them while he had been sulking, earlier. He noticed that his father was standing beside a woman and a young girl, and immediately he started to wonder whether or not Augustus had just been messing with him, or if he had been telling him the truth.
It was so hard to tell, most of the time.
“Donovan, there’s some people I’d like you to meet. This is Mrs.Englewood,” his father began, allowing his youngest son to extend a hand out towards the woman. “Nice to meet you, ma’am.”
“Oh, aren’t you precious?” she cooed, causing Donovan’s cheeks to turn a shade of pink. At least she hadn’t pinched them, but he was suddenly starting to feel incredibly uncomfortable – even more so when she turned and placed her hands on the girl’s shoulders, moving her over so she was standing directly in front of Donovan.
“This is my daughter, Rachel.”
She was a pretty girl, and seemed to be more comfortable with her surroundings than he was.
“Hi, Rachel.” He said, a bit lamely. His father didn’t seem too pleased, but quickly smoothed things over by inviting her mother to go and get a drink at the bar. “Donovan, keep Rachel company, would you?” The boy nodded his head, and once the two were left alone, he looked over at her. They stood in awkward silence for a moment, with Rachel folding her hands neatly behind her back, looking around and letting out a dramatic sigh.
“So…” he started, reaching up to fix his hair again. “Nice dress.”
He was so uncomfortable. He was
never this uncomfortable around new people, but his brother had planted the idea in his head that he was going to practically be forced into marriage with the next girl he met. That girl just so happened to be Rachel.
“Thank you,” she said, clearly pleased with the compliment. “I saw it in a shop and new I
had to have it. It was the nicest one they had.” She twirled the skirt a bit, and Donovan smirked.
“You look pretty,” he said earnestly, though he felt his ears get red. “I mean I’m sure you would look pretty in anything, but I just meant…it’s a nice dress.” He was sure him getting all flustered was probably making her think he was a total idiot, though she just lifted a brow at him before her lips upturned into a small, coy smile.
“You think I’m pretty?”
Donovan hesitated a moment before he nodded his head. Rachel’s smile widened, and her chin lifted slightly, clearly pleased by his affirmation. He suddenly felt a bit more relieved, and not nearly as awkward. This could have been a lot worse. He could have been introduced to some troll who called him out on acting like a loser.
“I think I heard my brother mention something about cake. Would you like to get some with me?”
Rachel thought about it for a moment. “I suppose I can have a piece, so long as I don’t get any on my dress.”
“I’ll help you clean it off, if you do. It would be our little secret.”
She beamed at him before she stepped to his side, looping her arm through his as though they had been pals their entire life. Donovan smiled at her as she raised her brows expectantly.
“Lead the way!”
