After the rescue....

The flight to the brush is fantastic. On an evolutionary scale, Starhaven is many millions of years behind Earth. While there are hers of small mammal-like creatures, there are also giant reptilian herbivores and land-bound carnivores that look like thy are best left alone. Birds of all types and fashions fill the air, flying strikes with the heroes only wheel away at a moment's notice. Overall the land is untouched, wiu it's people living in harmony with the nature around them.
Once out in the brush, they all land and Sunsinger offers his final words of advice: don't hunt after dark. Deadfall are daylight predators and oncethe night falls, he boys are best protected by a fire. It will keep the more fearsome predators away. After assuring Henry that he will guard his Green ring with his life, Sunsinger is gone, leaving the teens to heir own devices.
With the loss of the ring, Henry's wearing just his street clothes. He flexes his hand where the ring once was.
"Okay. So... Josh, can you sense any big beasties around?"
Josh is dressed in some civilian clothes as well but seems to have gone for something specifically for jungle travel. He shifts a little awkwardly with his weapons and closes his eyes.
"This planet is amazing..." he murmurs. The healer is silent for a long moment. "There's something big in that direction but I'm not sure what yet," he says, pointing.
Ava on the other hand is wearing something much more Starhavenish. He's dressed in soft buckskin pants and shoes, though he's opted to wear nothing from the waist up to keep from encumbering his wings.
He looks in the direction that Josh points and draws in a deep breath. "we should find the high ground. " he says. "That will help us get a better idea of the land. Do you guys wanna try going the direction Josh suggests?". Avalon is supremely thankful he's worked so hard on his English, save a thickening of his accent, he has little trouble communicating without his ring any more.
"Sure," Henry nods. "Head for the hills?"
Josh takes a deep breath and finally opens his eyes. "Alright. Lead the way."
It would have been much easier for Avalon to fly through the thick brush, but he stays on the ground with his friends, trudging through the jungle. Thankfully many of the creatures are so big that what equate to deer trails for them are quite wide and passage for the boys. It's a short hike, and soon they climb a bit and then find themselves atop a rocky hill and able to overlook to valley below. Avalon though keeps looking up and behind, wary of anything attacking from that direction.
"I think we're going to have to go deeper into the brush." he says softly, shaking his head a bit. "Feartail like cliffs to nest on.. and this area is too hilly." he then hrms a bit and says "I'll be right back, I'm going to scout."
Henry nods. "Go ahead, Blue."
Josh reaches over to place a hand on Ava's shoulder. "Relax," he whispers. "I'll sense anything before it gets close. No need to fear a sneak attack," he says, having noticed Avalon's wariness.
When Ava mentions going off alone, Josh looks a bit nervous himself. "Don't go too far..." he trails off softly.
In all honesty, Avalon feels safer in the sky than on the ground on Starhaven, and for good reason.. there are many giant predators that would love to make him a snack, where as the biggest and most dangerous predator in the sky is in fact the one they are hunting. Still, he offers Josh a small smile and nod to his words, and then spreads his wings and leaps into the air. He wheels up into the air, riding thermals with ease, trying to find what he's looking for.. and he does. Without much trouble at any rate.
Within a good few moments he's making his way back down, his bearings on track now that he's gotten them. Back upon the ground he motions to the east, his tone soft as he says "There's a ridge a little bit that way, shouldn't be too far to get to if we follow this trail. I can see the cliffs on the other side of the ridge, so I'm figuring that there's a river valley or canyon below, which should give us a good area to search."
Henry nods. "Lead the way," he gestures.
Josh keeps careful watch on Ava. When he comes back down, the healer nods. "Yeah. The path is mostly clear of other life forms so it shouldn't be hard."
The teens set off, though the terrain is still rugged and gets progressively more and more hard to traverse as they reach the ridge. They seem to be heading upwards in altitude, but it's hard to tell exactly until they actually get to the area Avalon has been talking about.
Of course it's been a long day already, and as they start nearing the ridge, the sun is beginning to start it's march towards darkness. It's not setting yet, but if they intend to find some place worth staying, it would best be done before nightfall.
"We sure didn't get too far.. but at least we got here." Avalon says cheerfully, before he heaves out a sigh and then asks "Which way do you guys think? We might be able to find a cave if we went down the canyon. Though up here it's going to be easier to travel in which ever direction we settle on."
Henry's gotten pretty sweaty from the long, warm walk, and he's taken his shirt off for the walk. He wipes his face with his shirt.
"Let's stay here. Set up camp out on the ridge. That way, we can see if a Feartail heads overhead, and if we get attacked by a predator, we won't be locked in anywhere." Henry grins. "Plus, sleeping out under the stars will be nice."
Josh's shirt just ends up opened. Sleeveless and thin, it's just hanging on him. He's not sweating yet but the heat is bugging him.
"Yeah, here is fine," he says. "The novelty wears off quick," he says softly. "But it'll be nice with you guys."
"If we're lucky, it'll only be a few nights." Avalon says to them, grinning widely. The heat is something that doesn't bother him really for he's mode designed to deal with it. That or he's been on Starhaven enough times that he doesn't even think about the heat any more.
"Let's try and find a spot then get settled. Build a fire.. all that.." he says. "We should also try to find something to eat, but I can take care of that better form the sky."
"I'll build the fire. Ava, you find an animal to eat, and Josh, you find some edible plants. We meet back here." Henry moves off to the shrubs, looking for some wood they can use.
Josh squirms a little, not liking splitting up. "Okay," he says after a moment. "Just don't go too far," he requests, heading out into the shrubs in search of edible plants.
Luckily, it's not too dangerous in this area. Avalon takes off with his spear and knife and is gone for a good bit, hunting for anything that might be unlucky enough to come across his path. He returns as the sun is finally starting to sink lower in the sky, two small rabbit like creatures already cleaned and ready to be roasted. He made sure to get them ready out of Josh's view out of respect for the healer.
When Henry returns, he's got a large stack of wood he's managed to chop to pieces with the hand-axe he brought. He's hoping it should be enough to keep them going through the night. He's got the fire going, with other pieces off to the side to be fed to the flames as needed.
"We'll probably want to sleep in shifts," Henry suggests. "That way, we've got someone awake in case of predators, and keep the fire going. I don't mind taking the middle shift."
Josh is gone the longest of the trio. He stopped to enjoy the feel of the planet, heal a broken tree, and very carefully examine the plants. When he returns, he's got an armful of edible plants and even some berries.
"Okay, Henry. I can take the first shift," he volunteers. "Make mine double too. I can last longer without sleep."
Ava nods to what Henry says, and leaves his kill with the other teen as he ventures just into the brush to find what he is looking for.. sticks about an inch wide and long enough to stake the rabbit-things on. When he returns he starts to ready their meal for cooking, his eyes turning between the two others. "Alright.. if that's what you guys want. I am usually up early any way so it won't be hard for me to get up a few hours before dawn and take the last shift." he agrees.
Soon he has the rabbits angled over the fire and settles down next to it, his wings pressed against his spine. "So.. here we are.." he says with a small little smile. "I almost miss Rock Band."
"There's something to be said for camping, and getting away from Rock Band for a bit," Henry notes. He glances at Josh. "I mean, as long as you can go home afterward... right?" He leans back, looking up to the sky.
Josh blushes at the mention of Rock Band. "Well...I can still sing if you guys want me to..." he offers bashfully. "And yeah...having a home to go back to makes things good." |
