Nobody but Avalon is Home

Glancing up, Ava offers a bit of a smile as he says "Yea.. luckily I've not gotten sick or anything since I came.. Although my ring helps with that too.. Does yours work that way?" Glad for the subject change, he sits back and starts to relax, his expression brightening a bit. "Josh is a sweetheart though, he's my best friend." he grins then, "And worth more than just having around for healing. He's a really good listener and fun to hang out with."
Alex blinks and lifts his hand. He peers at his ring and frowns. "You know...it might but I'm not entirely sure. Mine doesn't come with a built in instruction manual. I haven't been sick since I was real little anyway though. Before the ring," he shrugs.
He smirks as Ava goes on about Josh, suppressing a pang of jealousy. "Sounds like you lucked out getting Henry and your healer," Alex remarks.
Feeling the pang of jealousy, Ava takes on a gentle expression as he reaches out and pets at the back of Alex's hand. "A lot of what happened between the three of us is.. fate. I was sent here to be Henry's partner and he didn't appreciate it at first. You simply have not crossed that point in your life. I am sure that you will find what you are meant to find when the time is right." he says.
Tilting his head to the side, Avalon says "Maybe you should start training with us - Henry and I regularly go out to space to train."
Alex tenses up and glances at Ava warily. The whole 'empath' thing hasn't clicked with him. "I don't buy into the fate stuff, dude," he said. "And even if it is pulling the strings...it's got a sick sense of humor," he mutters, still bitter about the whole thing with Goldstar.
"Training? Like what?" he asks, curious now.
"A lot of people don't believe in fate the way that I do.. but part of that comes from growing up on Naltor the way I did - everyone there is a precognative, so it's kind of hard to get away from what the future is supposed to be for me." Avalon explains. "I'm not precognative, but my mother is.. I ended up empathic because of her genetics though."
Hopefully that would put Alex at ease.
"Mainly just maneuvers. We like to be sharp and not hesitate in the line of duty, y'know? Maybe it would do you some good to hang out with more Lanterns and do.. y'know.. Lantern stuff?"
Alex blinks. "Psychic powers..." he trails off, shaking his head. "So, you can read emotions? Must be helpful," he says, stretching. He does relax though.
The wielder of the Starheart ring laughs a bit. "There are no other Lanterns like me other than Grandpa Alan and Aunt Jenny," he says. "But I guess I can come hang with you guys for awhile if you'll have me."
"Just because you've got a different kind of Lantern Ring doesn't mean that you're not a Lantern." replies Ava with a smile. "I don't see you as any different than.. say.. another of the spectrum."
He smiles a bit more, then says "You're still a Lantern, even if you're a different type. You're like.. a cousin."
Alex smirks and holds up his hand, letting his ring flare up. "See, I'm not part of the emotional spectrum though," he says, having been doing his homework on lanterns for once.
"See, long before the Guardians even made those idiotic Manhunters, they tried to contain all the magic in the universe into one place. This became the Starheart. A long time ago, parts of it fell to Earth and was carved into a lantern. Eventually that lantern ended up in the hands of my Grandpa Alan and he created a ring from part of it," he continues to tell the tale, creating little constructs as illustration.
"So as you see, my ring isn't connected to the Central Power Battery on Oa and doesn't use the green light of willpower. It's magic," he says.
"A cousin?" he asks, quirking a brow.
Ava blinks a time or two as he listens, not really knowing the whole Starheart story. "Well.. still, just because you're not connected to the central battery doesn't make you a lantern too. I mean.. I'm not connected to Oa.." he smirks, "I'm connected to another central battery, one of Odym but.. Still."
He grins a bit to the other teen, adding "Yea.. Like a cousin, kind of."
Alex chuckles a little and shrugs. "Yeah, I know about the Blues and Reds and Indigos. I talked with another Green when I was in space and she gave me the low down on all of the other corps," he says. "I get what you're sayin' though," he adds.
Alex then laughs and reaches over to ruffle Ava's hair. "You're an alright dude, Avalon."
The ruffle causes Ava to flush a bit, and he ducks his head after Alex pulls his hand away, looking quite happy about the compliment. "Thanks.. I think?" he asks before grinning a bit at the other teen. "Dude means.. guy.. right?"
Alex laughs again. "Yeah, that's one meaning for it," he says. "The most common one," he adds.
Tilting his head to the side, Ava looks down at his ring and then makes a confused expression as he says "I'm being told that a dude also is a type of cow." That causes him to laugh, and he flutters his lashes at Alex playfully as he says "Am I some sort of cow?"
Alex shakes his head and gives Ava a playful little punch to the arm. "No, not a cow but you could be hung like a bull," he jokes, winking.
"Dude is just one of those words that has tons of meanings." |
