This is the worst way for anything to happen she thinks. Especially when she's on the verge of crying again because the defensive sarcasm did hurt because Sarah did care about him a lot. Hurting him was the worst thing that could happen.
"It was too late to turn around after I finally stopped running long enough to think sensibly..... at least I thought it was..... and I don't want to do this just because I need you. I want to be here because it's you, and I guess that's just as selfish as running like I did."
And now she can't even look at him.She's afraid of what she might see at this point.
