Of course animations and comics are art. And the best ones from the 30's 40's often made reference to the world of art. Dali is an interesting character; he actually worked at the Disney studios for a while.
Pursue animation art and/or the art of comics. There are several galleries downtown (Chelsea) that feature animation art.
