TT_TT Ok... is Lee actually going to get a chance to heal at any point during this journey? The poor guy'll die before the second season at this rate.

I like how you're revealing bits and pieces of Lee's past without blurting out the whole story. Of course I'm curious as to just who Jiro is... I mean, I can pretty well guess how he met Lee and came to be traveling without any family (does Haku ring any bells?), but just how highly placed was his father that he knows Zhao? Still I'd rather get the story a bit at a time...

I'm even more curious about Lee though... you managed to start the story right AFTER the encounter with the pirates & Zuko, but made no mention of the Fire Nation prince. Lee is also skilled with swords and I believe he is a fire bender based on his feverish mumbling. Lee is a common FN name that Zuko takes on at some point during the show, there's no reason to believe that an AU encounter with Jiro wouldn't cause him to don the name earlier. He seems to be in the right age range... even when Aang is captured by Zhao you make no mention of Zuko. Instead we see Lee save the Avatar with the aid of his earthbending companion.

Am I on the right track here? Or is it truly coincidence and you're just playing with our heads?

More information will come out around The Deserter, especially on Jiro. Though after wiki'ing Haku - I only saw his introduction, I never actually saw his backstory - I will admit you're onto something with the comparison there. Though his pyrophobia and then his pleas to his father while flashing back kind of give that away majorly, along with his scarred chest.

Look at it this way. No matter the outcome, you may rest assured that Cowriter and I are playing with your head. ^_^

Jk. :D I'll wait and see where you go with this. ^_^ (And yes, the MAJOR hints in this chapter had a lot to do with the Haku parallel that I drew, but some of those conjectures came before the "NO DAD!" cries.) :P
