Title: Melas Oneiros
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Rating: PG-13 for disturbing imagery
Summary: Song has a horrific nightmare.

Song slept badly and dreamt worse, of a barren plain bisected by a pit spewing smoke enough for a company of firebenders. Heat surrounded her, warping her vision and making her sweat. Her scar throbbed, then flared with pain as though the wound was fresh, and she cried out.

She found herself at the edge of the pit, staring down through the flames within to the monsters cavorting throughout the bottomless expanse. She saw lizards that flew, red eyes glaring and baleful. She saw a dragon with the face and torso of a woman, covered head to tail with glittering scales; it grinned at her and its mouth dripped blood.

She tried to scream, tried to flee, but fear rooted her in place and gripped her throat. Coldness swept over her, and then a black serpent rose from the pit, writhing and shifting forms nauseatingly. Its maw opened as it roared, and the cries of the damned accompanied it. Now she screamed, and screamed, and then she was a catsquirrel and yowling as the serpent snatched her up, drawing her to its mouth to consume her--

Warm hands, fever-hot, fire-hot, slipped around her, dragging her away from the gluttonous nightmare and against a firm, solid, real chest, and Song opened her eyes to stare into Zuko's golden ones.

He looked concerned (and wary), and rather than scratch him as she so often did, she turned her face into his chest, all but trying to climb inside his shirt. That dream, that nightmare, had seemed so real-! Had she been a girl, she would have flung her arms around him and sobbed, but she was an animal now and could not.

Zuko held Shou Mei close to him, slightly astounded that she hadn't drawn his blood yet. Uncle slept still; Zuko thought sourly that the old man could probably sleep through a hurricane, let alone his pet's yowls of fear.

He hadn't even known catsquirrels could dream.

But what else could have terrified her so? He could feel her tiny body trembling against him, her face shoved inside his shirt as she hid from whatever demons her nightmare had visited upon her.

Whatever it had been, it must have been horrendous - he was positive Shou Mei hated him as much as she adored Uncle, so for her to accept his comfort...

Zuko sighed and gently stroked her mottled fur, smoothed her bushy tail, and made certain not to move suddenly - Shou Mei had thus far only scored him with her front claws. He knew the back claws of any feline were much worse. "It'll be okay," he told her softly as he settled down with his back to a tree. "Nothing's going to get you. It's okay." He kept stroking her gently, feeling her trembling slowly ease.

When Iroh woke with the dawn, he first blinked and then smiled at the sight that greeted him: his nephew sleeping against a tree, with Shou Mei cradled in his arms and softly purring.
