Brief History: Olin Prescott's marriage to Sydne Gerry was not the first of such for either of them, it was his second and her fourth. While she had two other daughters from previous marriages, Laurie was the first for the future film mogul. Things seemed great, and it seemed as if the three were a perfect family... for a good eight months. The divorce happened rather swiftly, with Sydne getting a nice hefty sum of money (no less than two million dollars) and Olin gaining primary custody of their infant daughter. Sydne didn't really play a part in her third offspring's life for quite a few years to come, and with the fashionista's jet-setting ways Laurie wasn't the only Gerry offspring that was treated this way. That wasn't to say that Olin was the most prominent figure in her life, not by far. He himself was always busy and there was always something or other that was more paramount at hand. Thankfully, of course, there are certain people who find it within their hearts to take care of other people's children. Why? Who knows. But it was Rebeccah, her nanny, who was the one nearly entirely responsible for her upbringing.
Just what was her father so busy with? Well, in his younger years he had written a screen play for, produced, and directed a low budget black comedy. Just a small indie film that he never actually imagined anything would come out of it, but it managed to gain quite a bit of attention from an up and coming production company. It wasn't long after that they financed a remake of the movie, and what had originally had been destined to become a cult classic was suddenly an enormous success. That movie led to a collaboration on another screen play that he also directed, and then two more and eventually Olin Prescott had made quite a name for himself and relocated to Hollywood, California. That was where he eventually started his own independent film production and distribution company, married & divorced Sydne, and also where his daughter was raised.
From the time she was born it seemed Laurie herself was no stranger to the spotlight. Diaper and baby food commercials were only the first of many
gigs she would get. As she grew older, often all it took from her agent was the mention of her father's name. Who wouldn't want to flash the face of the only daughter of Olin Errol Prescott? A natural, they called her. It was this natural ability that got her the other jobs that her familial associations didn't. At only the age of eight she already had quite the impressive resume for someone of her age. Stints of children's educational shows, more commercials, print work, voice-overs for quite a few animated movies, as well as no less than seven roles - albeit small - in various movies for her father's company- it seemed there was nothing that she couldn't take on.
Well at least when it came to acting and modeling, school was an another subject entirely. She had never been to a public school, and her entire life was tutored by some of the area's best private teachers. This was fine with her, and it was also because of such that she really made a name for herself. Since a young girl, she'd always loved to sing and was actually pretty good at it. When she was nine her mother moved out to California with both of her older sisters, and it was actually her that suggested she take up singing professionally. It didn't take long for a plan to come into action; Laurie was to be a part of a pop group compromised of herself and three other girls her age. Surreal - as it came to be called - had quite a bit of success, and there where two national tours along with three albums before tensions between the girls forced them to call it quits.
Things happen, and it wasn't like her to just be content staying out of the spotlight by now, and she had a few more appearances in some of the more family-oriented films her father's company produced. It was also during all of that that she first actually met her two older sisters, Jennica and Rosaleigh. Apparently the entire reason for them all moving out to California was because Rose was looking into pursuing modeling, and it was that they bonded over- the love of being the center of attention. Especially when Laurie managed to score a contract with a well known record company when she was fourteen. No one expected the former bubbly pop star to move down the laid-back singer and songwriter trail, but it did work for her. Hell, she even picked up an acoustic guitar and taught herself to play. Or rather an extremely skilled music teacher did, but it was of her own accord that this came about.
No one said that making a record was easy though, but finally after nearly two years Lauressa Prescott's debut album,
Venture to Say Yes, was released. There had been publicity for months, pumping it up as everything from the "sweet escape for your everyday girl with a guitar" to "the next great voice of the generation". Never one to turn away from praise, she was quite pleased when Venture made it to number six on the Billboard charts for four weeks straight. The next year was a whirlwind of press tours, performances everywhere from in-stores to talk shows, ungodly long lines of people who wanted her autograph.... it really didn't seem to end. The summer when she was sixteen, after complaining to her eldest sister about how tiring this was all getting for quite some time, the two went to visit Jenny all the way across the country on Isle of Palms, South Carolina.
Laurie's stay didn't last as long as she might have liked - what with her business obligations back home - but it was during those two months that she had some of the most fun of her life. It was awesome, just being able to live life without worry of making sure every action was prim & proper, constantly look over your shoulder for paparazzi, and just be able to let loose, but that didn't mean she didn't grow 'homesick' for her beloved Hollywood. Saying goodbye to her sisters, she went back and was immediately thrown headfirst into all of that once more.
As she neared her seventeenth birthday, she was fast heading back to the recording studio with tons of available material, or at least she was until a disaster struck. One of the songwriters she had collaborated with on nearly half of the songs on Venture was suing, stating that he wasn't getting the proper royalties as outlined in his contract. Enter an over-publicized and extremely drawn out legal battle that ended in the offending songwriter getting nothing, as well as being blacklisted in the recording world, but it did take a good year for it to all resolve itself. It was also during this time that Olin met and quickly 'fell in love' with an adult film actress that was finally giving her hand at more mainstream venues. Within a month of meeting Astoria and Olin were married, and it seemed not long after that they announced that Mrs. Vivièr was expecting- triplets. They tried to include Laurie in their new little family, but she really didn't feel comfortable calling a woman only ten years her senior
mom.
It was decided that she would take a short vacation before recording actually started last summer, and where else was she going to go but to Isle of Palms? Yet again it was nice to just forget her worries and live life like a normal completely spoiled teenager. When she got back to California in early August the headaches started, and then came the voices. She feared she was finally cracking under the pressure and tried to just ignore it, but it was during a spot on a radio show in early January, to help bring about some early publicity for her album to be released in the spring, that she finally lost it. Laurie freaked out on air, and was rushed to the hospital. After a barrage of neurological and psychological tests, her malady was simply labeled as exhaustion. Her father and agent wanted her to start going to therapy, figuring it might help ease this all, but she outright refused. The voices didn't go away, but she soon figured out that she wasn't actually schizophrenic.... but could read the minds of those around her.
With this odd knowledge tucked away, she loaded up on pain killers for the headaches and set off back to the studio to finish her second album. They were all pressed for time, but
A Little Magic to Live By came out on schedule in late-February of 2009. It reached the number one spot on the Billboard charts for two weeks, before moving down two spaces to rest for eight more weeks. It was deemed a success and there was talk of
more tours,
more albums,
more everything... but Laurie just wanted a break. These headaches weren't getting any better, and neither was she really being able to come to terms with the fact that she could read the thoughts of minds around her. It seemed that wasn't all, she could also mentally speak to people around her, and it was starting to happen- frequently. Most people seemed to try and play it off like they weren't hearing her voice, and seeing her memories in their head. But after a rather odd encounter with the head of the company producing her records, in which she accidentally admitted to wanting to punch him in the face, she decided to take a real break.
Calling up her sister Jenny, she decided to go back to South Carolina to give herself some room to breath, and a bit of space to figure this all out.
Brief Description of Power Capabilities:She twitches. Telepathy. The ability to transfer of mental information, such as thoughts, ideas or emotions between individuals by means other than the five classical senses. While it has much potential, at the moment Laurie can only hear the thoughts of others, and is still getting the hang of being able to project and create mindlinks with people.
She still has trouble blocking out the minds of others most of the time, as well as she's not very good at keeping her own thoughts to herself.
