NAME: Evelyn "Evie" Margaret Pilliwickle
AGE: Fifteen
HOUSE/YEAR: Slytherin, Eleventh Year
SOCIAL STATUS: Her family is certainly affluent, and while they don't span centuries with their affiliations to Hogwarts, they certainly aren't sucking the bottom of the bucket. While the name Pilliwickle is well established, a few choice marriages - including the one to her mother, and later, to Mrs. Bates - have ensured that the name does not carry the prestige it once did. In spite of this slight dip in fortunes, Mr. Pilliwickle is a successful barrister who specializes in commercial law. The family does not go without, and due to their parents divorce, both Evelyn and Georgiana have perhaps been more than a little bit indulged. They may not live in the lap of luxury, but horses and summer vacations are all well within the Pilliwickle budget.

APPEARANCE: Up until last year, there was nothing very remarkable about Evie Pilliwickle. In fact, compared to her beauty of a sister, she has always been decidedly plain and even a little on the odd side. With set eyes and a particularly round face, the baby fat that once made her cute has lingered in a way which makes her seem younger than she really is. Plump cheeks are matched with plump lips, perfect for pouting and sulking, both of which she is well known for. Her skin is neither particularly pale nor tawny, but a slight rim of red can often be seen around her otherwise bright blue eyes, giving her the distinct appearance of someone who has spent a good deal of their childhood sick. Though that isn't the case, the effect is the same, and makes it seem as if she's constantly missed a night of sleep. Despite these unremarkable features, there's something to be said for the power of a smile. If and when Evie chooses to do so, some would go so far as to call her pretty. In fact, she pays a surprisingly close amount of attention to her wardrobe and make-up, and has become rather more vain over the course of the summer. For someone so apparently against all that is feminine, she seems acutely aware of how to put together a flattering outfit.

Standing at around 5 foot 4 inches, she's neither tall nor short. Her body weight is average, the baby fat visible in her face still shaping out a slightly rounded stomach and arms. Despite the fact that she's far from a stick, she hasn't been exactly blessed with curves, either. Being only fifteen, she's more or less in the throws of developing, which she finds entirely infuriating, and she's still hoping she'll land the voluptuous breasts her sister was renowned for. As it stands, that doesn't seem incredibly likely, but she hasn't lost hope yet. She may not be a Victoria Secret model, but there's no doubt that something has changed about her, and she doesn't exactly mind the attention. Her hair, which has always been kept in tight pigtails, has been chopped and styled and helped to offset the youth in her face. A non-descript sandy blonde, it frames her round face and sometimes gets in her eyes, causing her to constantly flick her bangs away with a toss of her head. All of this is secondary, however, due to the fact that Evie's face is generally consumed with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. Some of her favourites include the "Die" and the always popular "Bite Me". In all, everything from the haughty way she holds her shoulders to the scowl visible in her thick brows gives one the impression that she isn't the sort to be crossed.

DESIRED PB: Indiana Evans :)

PERSONALITY: When people come across someone who is cold, they tend to try and create histories to explain away their harshness. Often, a bad childhood, lack of attention and affection, or some lack-lustre story about the death of the nuclear family is accredited. In Evie's case, there is a good deal of wiggle room for one to argue that her parents' less-than-tidy divorce has contributed to her aggressive nature; perhaps there's a grain of truth in it, too. But so far as Evelyn - or Evie - is concerned, she's just like this. Being mean comes naturally to her and what's more? Is she likes it.

One of the first things that one might notice about Evie is the frequent and liberal way in which she expresses herself. She has no filter. What comes into her mind, inevitably comes out her mouth, even if she isn't the sort to constantly chat. Hurting people is like a sort of game to her. She is able to hone in on someone's weak spot, be it a physical defect or a certain area of insecurity, and goes in for the jugular. Usually, she pairs her most aggressive comments with a self-satisfied smirk ("You've gained thirteen pounds; it all went to your stomach.") which only serves to make the hit that much sweeter. Despite the satisfaction she gets in seeing other people hurt, it doesn't mean she goes out of her way to do so. There's a hint of apathy, which is completely feigned, that tends to make her appear languid, even lazy. From the way she slowly moves her eyes to meet someone’s stare to the soft scoff which punctuates the end of her insults, she gives the impression that someone should be so blessed to be lashed at by her tongue. Her sentences are short, compact, and to the point, often delivered with the sense that she's being annoyed. There is no beating around the bush, nor is there waxing poetic for hours on end. Just self-satisfied, brazen punches.

Evie's mean streak isn't just skin-deep. Despite a frosty exterior, years of wanting new ponies and dolls has made her acutely aware of how to pull the right strings. When she wants something, there is absolutely no stopping her, no matter how many toes she might step on in order to get there. A typical Slytherin, she's ambitious and cunning, and can talk out of one side of her face while using the other. Her forked-tongue, especially when it comes to adults, has been the leverage needed to wiggle her way out of many a sticky situation. But the manipulation doesn't stop there. In general, it tends to have much deeper and darker undertones. If she wants to hurt someone, blunt jabs are just the warm-up. Conniving and aggressive, Evie is the sort who, once burnt, will sit and stew for hours on end. Her plans are vary, at times simple snooping paired with blackmailing, at other times complex and involving accomplices. This is where her master manipulation comes in.

Her philosophy in life is simple, and was discovered mid-divorce while reading one of her father’s law texts: humanity is nothing more than a vicious bunch of slimy animals fighting one another for the biggest portion of slop. As Hobbes put it, humans are simply beasts organized by civil society. Essentially, Evie’s outlook is entirely bleak; despite having respect for a smattering of philosophers and writers, it’s on a purely intellectual level, and she guesses that if she knew them in real life, she’d be just as disgusted as she is with those around her. This pessimistic outlook, however, remains conservative in so far as she sees a general superiority in her kind, if only for ruling purposes. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t realize that 99% of her Slytherin classmates are about as useful as a brick being thrown out the window, it simply means she understands their place in the constructed order of civilization. She can, therefore, find enjoyment or entertainment in others’ company; she can muster up civility if she wants to, and isn’t opposed to friendly conversation, even. The overriding face remains, however, that she understands inherently that none of them, classmates, family members, friends or otherwise, are worth a stitch. There is no saving, and there is certainly no larger picture. Everyone is an idiot.

LIKES: Existentialism, Sylvia Plath, animals, Baudelaire, gory films, orange juice, the macabre, philosophy, Kafka occasionally, some Poe, the French on principle, decadance, Restoration poetry, modernism, murderers, pyschology, the anatomy of violence, cults, Paradise Lost, the mythology of the Bible, laughing at religion, Voltaire.

DISLIKES: People. Gryffindors. Hufflepuffs. Ravenclaws. Some Slytherins. You. Everything not on her 'like' list.

INSIDE SCOOP:
√ Evie absolutely, completely, LOVES animals; loves in the obsessive, would-throw-red-paint-on-someone-for-wearing-fur kind of love. Perhaps it's because she sees humans as so entirely lost and animals as being so essentially innocent. It is only towards her pets that she shows any sort of affection, and it's the only thing she'll really and truly cry over. Her father used to encourage her to become a vet, but the idea of having to cut into a poor dog or cat drives her to tears. They remain the only living creatures for which she will shed tears over.

√ Some of Evie's tendencies err on the side of obsessive-compulsive; despite seeming somewhat apathetic at times in regards to her classmates, she holds some perfectionist tendencies. She likes proving herself The Best, and is therefore a very sore loser. Her notes, for example, are immaculate and her room, spotless. Though Evie knows how to work a teacher, she would never hand in something second rate - she'd just hand it in a few days late, because she decided at the last minute it wasn't good enough.

√ A part of Evie - a small part - would very much like to fall in love, but not for the reasons most people do. She sees it as something of a social experiment, as she's convinced it would fail. Her parents own sham of a marriage is proof enough for that. Rather, she's interested to see the chaos which might come from such a situation. It might be better to say, then, that Evie would like someone to fall in love with her; afterall, being in control is very much her number one priority and explains why she doesn't drink or do drugs.

HISTORY: The marriage of Bartholomew Pilliwickle and Margaret Richardson was far from spectacular; despite the Pilliwickle's rather long-standing connections with the world of prestige and respectable money, the name had somewhat diminished from fashionable circles during the previous generation. World war politics and some questionable investments had seen something of a decline in the Pilliwickle fortune, though nothing that sunk them to total obscurity. Their manor secured and the intelligence of Bartholomew ensured that they would never go without. This new status, however, made them easy targets for those of the ladder-climbing persuasion. The Richardson's were an unremarkable family, nouveau-riche of the most obvious kind, and saw this as their in to the inner circle. For certain, a family such as Malfoy or Black would never marry their somewhat spastic and slightly erratic daughter, Margaret. But for reasons unknown, her wild nature and pretty looks caught Bartie's eye. To say he was in love might be something of a stretch; young and naive, to be sure, but in love, certainly not. He found Margie endearing, a little wearisome, but being rather apathetic to marriage in general, being such a young man, allowed it to play out conveniently before him. By the time they were twenty-three, the two were married and the Richardsons felt certain that, with the right amount of grooming and attention spent to their future grandchildren, they'd be well-established and on their way to historical remembrance.

Working as a barrister, Bart left his young wife home while he himself spent grueling days, establishing himself in the judicial legacy which had been left to him. Not one to simply rely on those who'd come before him, Bart was able to make a name for himself apart from his surname of Pilliwickle, as was soon a rising star in the family firm. His focus shifted to the lucrative field of commercial law after some persuasion on the part of his father and his young wife, who knew enough to know that it would mean a big bump in his paychecks. While Bart climbed the corporate ladder, Margie was doing something along the same lines domestically. Entertaining guests, both male and female, drinking one too many gin and tonics in the afternoon, and gossiping like something outrageous with the more elite wives of the circle she and Bartie found themselves on the fringes of. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that if one needed something a little on the sensational side, Margie Pilliwickle was your one-stop shop. However, this didn't mean her reputation was well-regarded. While Bartie was making friends easily, his young wife was almost certainly un-doing any of his hard work. Her flirty nature and penchant for slurring her speech made her an easy target of scoffing. If everyone wasn't so well pleased with the way young Mr. Pilliwickle had turned out, there would have been no hope for their offspring.

In the midst of all this chaos, it's a wonder that any children were conceived at all. It seems that in the brief interludes in which Bartholomew actually managed to make his way home, he used his time wisely. A daughter, Georgiana, was succeeded five years later by a second, Evelyn. The two girls would mark a milestone in the Pilliwickle family, but the situation hardly changed. Business went on as usual, almost in spite of the toddlers; save the extra staff member acquired vis a vis a nanny, there were few signs of anything unusual. The young girls never went without, but Margie ensured that their toys were contained in the top-level, Edwardian style nursery. While Georgiana took the spotlight, Evelyn was somewhat quieter, apt to play on her own than to join in on her sister's lavish stage productions. She took an early knack to her riding lessons as well as the violin, and her surly disposition was a marked constrast to her sister's larger-than-life persona. While her mother doted on Georgie, her father tried to foster his daughters interest and has always been an absolute sucker for her pout. Despite her cantankerous nature, her childhood wasn't exactly unhappy. Her parents' marriage, however, was. In the midst of society teas and studies in latin, Margie and Bart were in the middle of crisis. Her drinking and his dedication to the office ended in catasrophe when, a day after her eighth birthday, the two announced they were filing for divorce. Margie was furious, and began the bitter campaign against their father that day. In the end, however, her vindictive edge was what left her with nothing. Despite a hefty settlement, both girls opted to live with their father.

The divorce certainly did a number on Evie, but Georgie seemed unphased. Happy to have the freedom and upper hand when asking for something (guilt! what a marvelous tool!), she flew through Hogwarts with poor grades and the single goal of marrying rich. Majoring in keggers at the posh university she was sent to, she found her mother a perfectly admirable idol and tends to mirror her in every way. Due to this gap in age, she also managed to miss a good deal of the second most devastating event of Evie's life. Already angry, when Mr. Pilliwickle met Mrs. Bates at an annual Hogwarts Parent Night, security levels were raised from irritated to irate. The marriage has been a total shock to Evie; for one, an active maternal figure in her life had been largely absent; furthermore, the addition of a brother did not bode well. Not only was he a boy, he also had the misfortune of being an absolutely atrocious Gryffindor. The war had begun. Matty, according to Evie, is everything a human ought not to be. The territorial tug-of-war began the instant he moved into HER house with his second-rate bloodline and smelly boy paraphernalia, besmirching HER good name. Blackmailing, tattling and even, occasionally, stealing have defined the way Evie treats her brother. In spite of this upheavel, however, her marks have far from slipped. In fact, this new competition in the house has spurred her to achieve more and be better. In everything she does, she considers Matty and how it might work to her advantage. These days, Evie is constantly on her feet and if history is any good indication of the future, she won't be stopping anytime soon.
