o1. Because I wanted to parallel the fact that he's bloody brilliant but never achieved rank in canon. Because he lacks commitment. He doesn't exactly envision life beyond his Itachi finale, so it's not as if he sees an urgent need for a degree. That, and if a whole clan died and he's the lone inheritor, he's loaded enough.

o2. I think he is and isn't. He probably feels a duty to find his brother, to both settle and (DUNDUNDUUUUUUN) ~*~ avenge ~*~ the issue of their family - but he also probably... doesn't know what he'll do when he's confronted with Itachi.

o3. XDDDDDDD I dislike uber-angst and tend to translate a character's :'( in anything and everything that allows me to avoid rampant emote. So I'll have to go with, "There's a frightened kid tucked away in the shell," instead. He has his moments of odd clinginess, actually: he's OCD enough to get oddly jealous of things that take attention away from people who should be focused on him, he tends to absentmindedly pre-plan to have Suigetsu along whenever, he can't handle failure for the life of him, he's really stuck re: his sight, and he all but shuts down when he's cold. And he's very, very easily impressed by acts of (at least apparently) gratuitous kindness. I think finding Sasuke's soft spots is just a matter of realizing that he's 99% of the time whims and half-truths. A solid block of the boy's replies are "aaa," "hmm," and "tsk." He's usually not involved enough to aim for sentences, let alone actual malice XD
