Background History: Tayuya was born in San Francisco and subsequently adopted as an infant by a family who – in her mind – had “just grabbed a bunch'a foreigners and me, threw us all together, and tried to raise us as these crazy jesus freaks who could all get along or some shit, I don't even know”. And her perception had been mostly true; her family was comprised of 7 adopted siblings (two from China, one from Mexico, one from Saudi Arabia, two from Africa, one from Iceland; four boys, four girls including herself, the only American), and her parents were hyper-religious, attempting to set an example for their religious community by showing true harmony could easily exist when one trusted in Jesus and showed love for all. While this probably could work for some people, it didn't work because the children were existing as 'examples', and when you try to force children to be what you want them to be, it only works until they realize what you want them to be is neither normal nor beneficial.

Tayuya figured this out young. She was made to go to a band concert at her school, and even though the children weren't particularly good, Tayuya wanted to play, she wanted to play more than anything and she knew it right away. She'd ran home and pleaded with her parents to buy her an instrument – she didn't care which – and let her join the band, she wanted to join the band, pleasepleaseplease - but alas, no cigar. Her parents said she could only do chorus because she had to join the church choir. It was at this moment that Tayuya decided she was never going to forgive her parents for this unfathomable sin against her person, and true to herself, she never listened to them again. The next day, she talked to the band director, he gave her one of the school's instruments (a flute, incidentally) and she joined.
