By the time she was in Middle School, Tayuya was completely unrecognizable from the rest of her family. All of her siblings fit nicely into her parent's neat little mold, but she had taken on a different lifestyle entirely. Having mastered four band instruments and three orchestral instruments, she'd begun learning how to play the electric guitar and bass, as well as the drums and had even toyed a bit with her raspy singing voice. They'd tried to “force the devil out of her” through multiple channels, sending her to bible camp four years in a row (which she stayed at for exactly one day before getting on the canoe and crossing the lake to the band camp across the bend), transferring her in and out of five different schools, and eventually trying to homeschool her. Regardless, Tayuya had developed an attitude that couldn't be reasoned with, and that attitude got her into enough fights at school that she eventually got pretty strong, enough so that if she wasn't resentfully given what she wanted, she had plenty of ways to obtain it.

Her parents gave up on her when she was in a freshman in highschool after they found a demo tape of the progressive metal band she'd founded and fronted. The attitude they had for her was that she was going to hell, a devil spawn that they couldn't control, and so isolating her from the rest of the children was the only thing that could be done. Tayuya's name came up every week in the church handout for who to pray for, and every week, her mother talked to group about how she was going down the path of the sinner, how she'd found this or that in Tayuya's room, how she was hanging out with a dastardly crowd and how she was getting mixed up with bad people. Etcetera, etcetera. For the most part, her mother was mostly right. Tayuya snuck out of the house every night to see her friends, got drunk or high and played music so loud that God could hear it, fucked one of her many boyfriends at least twice a day, and in general, was the poster-child of what a kid shouldn't be.

Despite her reckless behavior, Tayuya was booksmart. If she read something, she remembered it, and she was very good at logic-based questioning which scored her a very generous SAT score (to the immense surprise of her guidance counselors and teachers). Despite that high school, her GPA had still been godawful, and if she wanted to go to college – and damn well she did, to study music – she'd have to take a year off or two to save up. In that year, she ended up moving out of her parent's place, bounced around the Haight Ashbury for a couple of months before moving to Nevada when her friend hooked her up with a job working in a casino. Tayuya blew that job after about a week when she bashed a customer in the head with a bottle of rum for talking shit, and was once against without employment. She played clubs and made friends for a while, bumming in her friend's apartment until she could afford a far shoddier place for herself, when she found FEEL GOOD, INC.'s ad in the back of the local paper.
