Hinata App~ [2]
Background: The Hyugas were a well known family in Japan, famous for their political power and for churning out some of the world’s greatest minds. An old family that could trace their linage back to the time of the Shogunate, the Hyugas were as wealthy as they were renowned. Populating career fields from police work to optometry, there was little not attainable to a Hyuga if they worked hard enough for it. At least, that’s what they wanted most outsiders to believe. A highly private and conservative group, the Hyugas had a habit of tracing lineages far too seriously, and those who were deemed ‘lesser’ through various reasons were mostly shunned by the ‘main house’ of the clan. The main house kept most of the wealth and prestige to themselves, and looked down upon those who had married outside their social status or did not possess enough talent, genius, or grace that was expected from the Hyugas. True, they took care of these ‘lessers’, deemed offhandedly as the branch house, but the treatment was significantly less than one could expect at the main house. And to make matters worse, once a male heir was secured for the main house, all else would be delegated automatically into the branch house unless they could prove themselves to be worthy of the main house.
The twin brothers, Hiashi and Hizashi Hyuga, were two such examples. Hiashi, by the grace of a few seconds, was born first, and thus dubbed the heir to the main house. All the responsibility of carrying out the family name rested on him, and though perhaps his brother was no less talented, he was brushed off to the side. Hiashi, however, managed the burden of being the oldest rather well, managing to continue to bring the family honor. He started on a pet project of opening hospitals, he wed well, and not soon after, managed to produce an heir. For all their rather conservative, and often backwards, traditions, the Hyugas don’t mind the gender of their heirs so long as they prove competent.
Hinata was born into a family where children were not seen as gifts, but the greatest showcase of someone’s talents. A child, especially the heir, had many things expected of them. They were to be graceful, polite, strong willed, driven, intelligent, etc. A tall order to be placed on anyone, and it soon became obvious that Hinata would not be able to live up to such goals. While perhaps not terribly slow and horrible, which could have been excused as perhaps defects of birth, she was average. She did not display any genius in any area, learned to walk and talk at the same time other children did, and had the gall to pick up things at her own pace. She was tutored relentlessly in manners, chores, and ways of entertaining and enthralling guests, though the only thing that seemed to stick was Hinata’s almost impeccable manners. Though many, including her own father, considered her unworthy of the Hyuga line, some thought differently. When Hinata was six, she was kidnapped as school was letting out, her driver receiving a note instead. It asked for ransom, though there were whispers of it being politically driven.
