Background History: Born and raised in a small fishing town called Chikura in one of the most rural parts of Japan, Sasuke’s family had always been very poor. Fugaku was a fisherman, but made little more than enough to feed his family, and especially in off season they often found themselves near-starvation in the run-down little home they lived in. As soon as they were able, both Sasuke and Itachi were on the boat helping their father, while their mother stayed at home and worked in the fields, gathering what food she could from their gardens. It was a tough life, and one Fugaku didn’t wish upon his sons, but no matter how hard he worked it was never enough to save and put aside for the possibility of their children going to school and rising up in social class.

In his younger years, Sasuke didn’t have a lot of time to play with other children, but because the community was so small, everyone worked together and formed a sort of unity that Sasuke enjoyed. Despite being so poor, he was happy with his family, and though he did think often of something more, he didn’t mind his place for the time being. He let his dreams of college and business rest, too young to really dwell on them and too naïve to care much about anything other than having fun whenever he wasn’t working.

When Sasuke was ten, a gaijin came into town and stayed for a few nights. Not getting many travelers, and especially not foreign ones, the entire village was curious about this man, who held himself high and wore expensive clothes, obviously rich. He took a liking to Sasuke and Itachi in particular, telling them stories from where he was from – America – and talking about his business, a corporate executive for a large sales company. He told them he was actually on business in international affairs, attempting to forge a new market. After a few talks, Sasuke let on that he’d always wanted to visit other places and get out of Chikura, upon which the man thought for some time before telling him that was a possibility. Both he and his brother could come to America and work for him, he would pay all their expenses and they could be fresh, new faces for his company, to help it branch out. He made the offer to their parents, who were understandably wary and fearful of the entire situation, but as the man stayed for longer and slowly won their trust, they decided that this might be the best and only way out for their boys, and to a country that would hopefully give them much more opportunity. The man was charismatic and persuasive, and soon Itachi and Sasuke were packing what little belongings they had and hugging their parents goodbye, promising to write all of the time, and return home when they were wealthy enough to visit. It was a very tearful and heartbreaking separation, and Sasuke cried for awhile afterward, hanging onto his brother.

They left and arrived in the metropolis of Tokyo, and the man with them lavished them with new clothes and good food, taking them around to visit the sites of the city while he arranged the plane flight back to the U.S. All of this made Sasuke forget his woes, and garnered even more trust for his new benefactor. Things were really looking up for both of them, and even though his heart was still aching from missing his parents, Sasuke had the optimism of a child who doesn’t see obstacles in their way, only believing that soon he would be rich and able to not only visit his parents, but give them enough money that they would never have to work hard like they did ever again. Ahh, youth.
