Winter.

"Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!" No, they weren't chanting for Sean Astin's wannabe football player. They were chanting for Holly Frass, a lean black girl with braids and a heavy brow. No one ever said it was going to be easy, starting high school after doing seven years on one of the most beloved sitcoms of the late 80s and early 90s. In fact, no one ever said anything about it at all... because most child stars wouldn't have done it. Tutors. GEDs. That was the way to go. But for some reason, Holly wanted the real school experience back. And with the money she earned from the show, her Father was able to finally pursue a life of dance without worrying about a mortgage. And Holly? Holly could pursue of life of... normalcy. Or so she thought.

Las Vegas didn't have winters life New York did. There was hardly any snow, and hardly a need for a coat most of the time. She missed the cold, the jackets, the kindness of strangers. In New York City, when you're a little kid people are nice to you. Once you develop breasts and are no longer employed? It's all fair game. "Yo Rudy, you got Mr. Huxtable's number? My girlfriend's pregnant. I want him to deliver the baby."

She couldn't even address it all, really. How do you lash back at an insult that wasn't even insulting? Instead Holly just rolled her eyes and nodded, pushing through the hallways to her locker where someone had already pasted a magazine clipping of The Cosby Show finale. "Don't worry. By the time winter's over they'll have moved on to somebody else," said a girl two lockers over, looking apologetic. Holly couldn't help but raise a brow. "How the hell can you tell when winter's over? All the seasons look the same here."

The girl laughed. "I'm Tanya, by the way. I really liked the show."

Hat.

“This is not a hat, Holly Inez. This is a crown.” Grandma Frass explained this with so much gravitas Holly never dared contradict her. At seven years old, however, she was able to draw her own conclusions privately: it was definitely a hat. A ridiculous, loud, embarrassing hat. She’d seen enough crowns in enough Disney movies to know that it wasn’t a damn crown. Her thoughts began to creep along the surface of her face, because her Grandmother turned from the mirror she’d been pruning in and whacked her on the back of the head. “Don’t you sass me, little-miss-TV-star.”

“I didn’t say anything!” Holly yelped, dramatically gripping her head to protect any consecutive blows.

“I am trying to teach you something. A valuable lesson about being your best and looking your best when going into God’s house. Being proud of being a follower of Jesus. Are you hearing me?”

Holly nodded, already growing bored with the conversation but trying to remember her manners. Despite the crown not being a crown, she had to admit there were some pretty neat sequin patterns on it. The swirling pinks and blues looked like glittering cotton candy.

“There. All done. Take a good look, because one day this crown will be yours. Can I get an amen?”

The little girl was wide-eyed, pressing her lips tightly together to keep herself from laughing. She’d never be caught dead in that ‘crown’. Grandma’s praises were pretty contagious, though, so with a little encouragement she let out the loudest amen she could muster.

The molding on the ceiling was rotted, corners filled with cobwebs and dust untended to for years. This wasn’t a room Aunt Lorraine was allowed in and no one else in the house was keen on cleaning. No, this was his room, an office with a futon and computer that was hardly ever turned on. The function of the room did not coincide with its title. No office work was ever done here. Sometimes the cobwebs thickened, twisting around themselves and forming shapes that Holly could stare at. She imagined Charlotte lived there somewhere, shy and hiding, but if she stared long enough she’d catch a glimpse of the eight legged creature creeping out of the cracks of paint. Holly’s imagination is what saved her from visits to the office. Her hope for seeing Charlotte in her web distracted her from anything that was happening below, made her numb from the whispers in her ear. Whenever she was led into the office, Holly went somewhere else. She visited Charlotte in her web, or joined Aslan in Narnia. Sometimes the bumps in reality were just unruly waves as she sailed the seven seas.
