He certainly doesn't want the second. But he feels awkward so he makes a desperate attempt to change the subject. "Um wasn't there someplace you wanted to go today?" There might have been, he's not sure, but hopefully it works. This was a completely normal conversation to have with her on his lap in the cramped front seat of a leaky car right?
