Except the ground does come up hard and fast - the hammer catches it first and there's the sound of splashing. However, as it is in dreams, where Lavi should have hit the bottom with an earth-shattering force.... he lands on a giant lily pad.
He may have fallen through a whole in a tree trunk - wherever he is now, it looks more like a moonlit forest. The lily pad he landed on is about the size of a king-sized bed, and the moon passing over the sky is impossibly large.]
