Unlikely Friendship? - test scene
It was a girl's night in; just the two of them.  Honestly, who would have guessed Emmeline Wagner and Valeria Richards would be sitting together in the Baxter Building, curled up in their own printed blankets with popcorn and an assortment of movies (which were not necessarily chick flicks).  For Valeria's sake, there were videos that were educational.  But for Emily's sake, they were Monty the Moose videos.  There was also a romance movie here, and a suspense flick there.  Not that they'd watch them all, but it was a good pile to choose from.  Emily chewed a mouthful of popcorn while Val popped in the first movie.

Friends Her Own Age were something that her mother was telling her that she needed more of. And while Valeria was perfectly content to just spend every waking moment of her time in the lab...a little socialization couldn't hurt every now and then, she decided.

Besides, Emily seemed nice enough. And Monty the Moose was entertaining, even if his films were meant for children.

Valeria pressed play, sitting next to Emily. "Comfortable?" She asked, as she opened a soda and took a sip.

"Oh yeah," Emily replied, grinning. "Dad and Talia are missing out the benefits of being able to snuggle into a blanket. So glad I didn't get fur."

"Your father makes the fur work for him, though." Valeria said, grinning.

She paused, thinking of what to say next. Sure, she could solve quantum equations in a heartbeat, but social situations? There was a reason she never really got out of the lab much.

"So...how are your parents, actually?"

Asking about her family made for good conversation. It was a start, at least.

Emily was going to hone in on that statement and poke a little fun at Val. But she opted to answer the question and drop the poke.

"They're doing wonderfully as always," she replied. "I think Dad took Mom on a little mini-vacation this morning. Not sure where, but they'll be back by the end of the day tomorrow. What about your parents?"

"They're doing well," she said. "Dad's been doing a series of lectures for the graduate students at ESU. I sit in occasionally, though I know them by heart."

...She did help write them, after all.

"Oooh, cool stuff." Not really her thing, but she could appreciate that Val was interested in all that science-y and mathematical stuff.

"What about Mrs. Richards?" Emily asked. "Anything exciting going on with her? Or hey, what about Franklin?"

"I've always enjoyed it," Valeria said.

"Mom is enjoying retirement from heroing actively, though she gets a little bored sometimes. And Franklin is well. He's been seeing Katie Power a lot, lately."

"Your mom and my mom should get together sometime and have a relaxing day," Emily suggested. "And leave our dads to do all the work around the house."

She laughed at that last part. Truthfully, her dad took part in quite a bit of the household chores.

"Ah, I see. I hope that's going well for him."

Valeria laughed a little. "I think my mom might enjoy that. Dad's a different story."

"I think it is," she said. "At least, that's the impression I get when he talks about it."

She laughed at the idea of Reed Richards doing chores. Emily could just picture him in an apron and yellow gloves.

"You ever talk to Franklin about anybody you're seeing?" Emily asked, grinning.

Valeria turned bright red.

"I...I'm not dating anyone. I...don't have time."

"But you've gotta have your eye one somebody, right?" Emily prodded. "What about Aleron? I know Gron-el is some major eye candy at least."

Not like she was going to give any looks to Aleron though, given the whole 'cousins' thing.

Valeria slouched down into the couch. Science was much easier than thinking about dating!

"They are both...nice, I suppose."

She chuckled.

"I'm sorry, Val" she said. "Let's find something else to talk about."

"It's quite alright, Emily. You were just making an attempt at some friendly banter. I know it was not truly your intention to make me uncomfortable. Dating and boys have just never been something that I'm good at. Not as easy as say, building a particle accelerator. Now that's something I could do in my sleep."

"It's okay. Not everyone is a genius."

...And then she realizes how condescending that sounds.

"Not that I'm calling you stupid! I don't think that at all!"

Emily laughed a little.

"I know," she replied. "I'm not offended. The Lord has plans for all of us. His plan for me didn't involve genius level intellect. I can't complain, since I know he has something special planned for me somewhere along the line."

"That's a good way of looking at it, I guess." Valeria said, nodding. She wasn't really a religious person herself, so she wasn't going to say something that would really offend Emily. "I'm just glad I didn't offend you."

Valeria's opting to be silent on that particular subject was most definitely the smart choice.

"No worries here," Emily said as she happily scooped up another handful of popcorn.

Valeria smiled. "I'm glad."

They sat in silence for the rest of the movie. When it was done, Valeria turned to Emily.

"What do you want to watch next?" She asked.

"How about... this!"

Emily grabbed one of the notorious Simon Williams movies.

"This has got to be good," she said. Good didn't necessarily mean good, either. She was sure Valeria knew what she meant.

Valeria raised an eyebrow. "...Simon Williams made a good movie?"

...Yes, sarcasm goes over her head sometimes, folks.

Valeria laughed. "For a second there, I thought you were one of those crazy Simon Williams fangirls who thinks all of his movies are cinematic gold...even though most of them are just so cheesy
