Dad had his phone off for a pastoral thing. Mom, Jane, and Gail were all in their classes. Ruth must be in class or have broken her phone with all That Stuff. Clara really needed to start talking this out now, and not a single member of Team Morgenstern had their phone on.

Except one.

"Jay?"

He recognizes the number, but is rather surprised - especially by her tone. Typically, Jay is the last person anyone should call with questions.

Still.

"What's up?"

"I've kinda got a Situation here -- not a bad Situation, like an opportunity and stuff, but I'm still kind of apprehensical and no one's answering their phones and of course Sister Drina says she'll wait until I can talk to Mom and Dad, but I gotta start talking this out before it gets weird, Jay."

"Ok, sister Drina? What does a nun have to do with this opportunity? Because this is already weird."

"Well, with all the superheroing, do you know any Lanterns?"

"In passing anyway, yeah. Petra's dad, Dex... why?"

"Did you know they come in blue? It's apparently kind of an outer space religious order, but they seem compatible with the Principles." Jay'd be familiar enough with the catch-all term for 'religiously dovetailing with us and not some kind of stealth-bigotry thing.' "And it's all very interesting, and they think I should join up, but -- it's a week in space. So obviously, I've got to talk to Mom and Dad about this; I can't just run off to outer space for a week," No matter how absolutely awesome that is.

"Yeah, but they let you go to camp based on expanding your horizons and meeting new people, even when they don't know a lot of the folks involved. The Blues, from what I understand, are good people... and if it could wait til after the bowl game, I'd be willing to volunteer to go with you."

""Really? Jay, you're the best obvious-future-brother-in-law ever. That might work. Sister Drina seems like she's into taking the time and doing it right. And either way it helps with explaining it to Mom and Dad if you and Ruth know what's up with things."

"We get a couple of weeks entirely off once the season ends, if she can wait. By the way, I have tickets for you."

Clara squeals a little. "Thanks, Jay! That's going to be great. And I bet Ruth's excited. I'll call you back after I've talked to her some more and -- here's hoping! -- Mom and Dad get home."

"I don't know." he admits. "I think she's a little sick of football at this point. But I'll tell her you called."

"Oh." Sounded like there might be something problem-y there, maybe. "Well, that too-shall-pass. She'll get back to liking it again eventually. After all, we've reached the point where you two have been dating too long now for me to ethically marry you, so it's obviously going to be you and Ruth, leaving plenty of time for her to get over any weird phases." Jay can hopefully hear the smile through the phone. "Just saying. But yeah, thanks, please tell her I called."

"Don't worry, you'll always be my #2 favorite girl. Ruth just cheated and got a head start." he teases, in friendly fashion. "I will though. I bet she'll be glad to hear from you."

Giggling. "Thanks, Jay." And she hangs up the phone and goes to find out about timing and consider how to ask her parents about joining a paramilitary outer space convent.
