Elphias/Phoebe - "Is It Over" by Kris Allen
Elphias watched as Phoebe furiously paced the room at the Leaky. They had just come off a fairly good snog and then she had to bring up his absence from Hogwarts. They were past yelling, now, thanks to a shouting match that required some extra charms on the walls. Elphias was hoarse, his throat dry and rough when he swallowed. Phoebe wanted him to come back to Hogwarts, but for all her fervor, she couldn't convince him nor could she pry out of him the full picture of why he didn't want to return.
"Is it me?" Phoebe finally demanded when she stopped pacing. "Is this how you break up with people? Just shove them out to be on their own without a goodbye?"
The words were a punch to Elphias's gut. She couldn't be more wrong. He gave Phoebe a pained look as he struggled to come up with more than a one word answer.
"No," he finally replied, quietly. "I can't just...let you go."
That did it. Phoebe was crying, now. She wiped the tears away as if she couldn't get them off of her face quick enough. "Well, I can't do this alone, Elphias. There are only so many ways I can say it: I need you there."
"I can't," he said earnestly. "Not now."
It was a deja vu moment for them both -- they'd been shouting those words at each other not five minutes ago. But this time, instead of shouting more, Phoebe went to gather her cloak.
"Fine," she spat. "I'll just go since it sounds like we're through all together."
Elphias stood. "I don't want to be," he said as he took a step toward her.
Phoebe laughed sardonically. "What you want is the last thing I want to hear," she huffed as she wrapped the cloak about her shoulders.
She was holding her nose high, but she was shivering like a leaf. Elphias knew she wasn't any good at being crass. When he tentatively wrapped his arms around her, she went to jelly. Phoebe drooped as she turned to sob against him. Elphias frowned as he attempted to console her by petting her hair. He couldn't think of anything to make her change her mind about him. It was all his fault, anyway. What could he possibly say that hadn't already been said?
Drawing in a shaky breath, Elphias hovered his mouth near her ear. "I love you, Phoebe," he whispered.
