Basics

Name: John J. Butler
Known Aliases: James Webb, Michael Vance
Age: 39
Date of birth: September 26, 1969
Occupation: Bartender/Thief/Mercenary/?
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Relationship Status: Married

Personality

Positives: Tough, clever, persuasive, resourceful, well connected, good in a fight, quick thinking, charming (sometimes)
Negatives: Bitter, cynical, judgmental, short-tempered, violent, greedy

Summary: John Butler has seen it all and most of it didn't impress him. He is bitter and cynical and doesn't have time for nonsense. He wants to know what's in it for him and his sense of morality extends only as far as himself and the few select people he cares about. He's well connected within the world of the less than law abiding and when someone says that they know a guy who knows a guy? John is that guy. He makes it his business to know exactly which shady people are up to which shady deeds and he's more than willing to do some dirty deeds himself, if he's paid well enough. On the surface he seems very serious, and it's true that he doesn't suffer fools gladly, but he does have a sense of humor. It's just a very dark and cynical sense of humor that not everyone appreciates. When he puts his mind to it he can be quite charming and extremely persuasive, though he generally prefers intimidation as a means of convincing people to see things his way.

History

Family: Sarah Butler (wife) ([info]charmandchance), Russell Butler (father, deceased), Mary Butler (mother, deceased), Paul Butler (younger brother), Emily Burke (ex-wife), Mary Jameson-Cartwright (sister-in-law), Grace Jameson (sister-in-law) ([info]grace_alone)

Summary: John was born in Coventry, England. He's the oldest of two boys brought up by struggling working-class parents. He had a rough childhood and adolescence. John left home at seventeen and moved from job to job and city to city, conning, stealing, fighting, and falling in with 'interesting' people. He got into exactly the sorts of trouble you'd expect someone to run into if they spent time around guys with names like 'Dave the Hatchet' and 'Tony Nine-Fingers', but found it was profitable trouble and the sort he was good at. Of course he was known as 'John the Baptist'. Ask him about it, it's a 'fun' story.

In his late twenties he met and ended up marrying an American artist named Emily Burke. They settled down in her hometown in South Carolina where he quickly made new connections and continued in the same 'career' he'd always been in, now with a somewhat international twist. The marriage was a short and rocky one. After five years, countless fights, affairs on both sides, and several on-again off-again separations the two finally divorced, each leaving the marriage far more damaged than they'd entered it. Emily moved to Boston. For lack of anything else to do, John ended up on Isle of Palms. He worked as a bartender at Eddie's Bar and eventually bought the place. He's been slinging drinks there for years now. The place draws an eclectic clientele and the bar (along with it's owner) has earned quite a reputation among certain groups.

One of the people drawn there was Sarah Jameson. A skilled con-artist in need of some temporary help, they pulled several successful jobs together. In the processs the two became quite close, even with what might seem like clashing personalities. Despite his jaded view of romance, John found himself falling for her. Like a fool, he fought it at every turn and didn't say or do anything until right before she left. Years later, she came back and they picked up right where things left off. After only a few short months they ran off to Las Vegas to get married, making up for lost time.

Power

Psychometry: John can 'read' information from objects by touching them. When using his power he gets flashes of information in the form of emotions, visions, sounds, sensations, memories, and intuitive knowledge about the object and people who have come into contact with it. Emotions and emotionally charged memories are the most strongly transmitted by objects and the more recently someone has been in contact with an object the more detailed the information is. John has become quite familiar with his ability, but he's still working on filtering the information and searching for specific details. It is possible that his power may extend to future events and persons connected with an object in addition to the past and present, however this aspect has not yet manifested.
