It may be Cousin Jill's special day, but all eyes in the tiny VFW reception hall are on another couple as htey float around the floor. As the song ends, he dips her with one hand cradled at the small of her back. Danny Hildebrandt bends to kiss his wife; there's a smattering of applause.

Alison's cheeks immediately flush. She is thirteen. There is not much her parents do that doesn't embarrass her.

"Why do they always do this?" she hisses the question to no one in particular. Because Rose thinks her ugly purple junior bridesmaid dress gives her some kind of status however, she responds.

"I don't know. I think it's kind of sweet."

"You would," Alison mutters, turns back to the dance floor and oh my god are they doing the hustle? Whatever it is, it's definitely a remnant from their disco days. Her dad twirls her mom dramatically and her skirt swirls out away from her body.

Rarer than a Siberian tiger in the wild, a small smile appears on her surly, teenaged face. It doesn't last long. Her thick black frames slip down on her nose and it's gone. She rolls her eyes and adjusts her glasses, but it does not erase the tiny part of her that says someday.

"How have you not seen this, Alison? Denzel Washington won an Oscar...it's cinematic history," Alex is squatting in front of the VCR. The renter before them was not kind enough to rewind and the little box's corresponding remote has gone missing in action. "Plus...there is nothing I do not find perfect about Matthew Broderick's performance.

From the couch, Alison watches his shoulderblades move underneath the worn fabric of his Pearl Jam t-shirt. There is nothing I do not find perfect about you, she thinks, and it makes her giddy.

She wasn't sure at him when he approached her and Caroline's lunch table at the beginning of the semester and asked if he could sit with them. Now, they spend every lunch period talking about film and music and art. He's completely different from every boy she's ever met and she likes him likes him likes him. She's pretty sure he's into her, too. He hasn't come right out and said it, but all the evidence is there in the cute captions he adds to the doodles she passes him in third period and the way he always makes sure to compliment what she's wearing.

More importantly, this is the third Friday in a row he's invited her over for a movie night. As he leads her back towards the rec room, he mentions that his parents are out to dinner and probably won't be home until later. Her stomach flip-flops from the feeling of "this is it."

After he finishes rewinding the movie, however, he turns the lights off, takes a seat next to her on the couch...and they watch the movie. Well, he watches the movie. Alison watches his profile, admires the way the light from the screen highlights his beautiful bone structure.

Silently, she wills him to make a move. Robert Shaw is writing a letter to his father and all she can think is Kiss me. Please kiss me. Kiss me so I can kiss you back. Unfortunately, his eye stay trained on the screen. Alison sighs and turns her attention back to the 54th regiment.

She's almost positive he's only here because he feels a sense of familial obligation to her. Or possibly it has something to do with the announcement that today was her birthday when it sort of sounded like he was trying to beg off on the phone earlier. Or maybe he just really likes miniature golf. Whatever it is, she'll take it. He's the closest thing she's got to a friend in Los Angeles right now. Beggars can't be choosers.

After he beats her quite mercilessly, she excuses herself to the ladies' room. She returns to loitering near a bank of gumball machines. He holds up two temporary tattoos for her inspection. She chooses a skull with a rose caught between its teeth and leaves him a rainbow shaded heart framed by two leaping dolphins.

"Happy Birthday," he's flashes her a rye smile as he hands it over.

Later, they stand cramped in her apartment's tiny bathroom with their sleeves rolled up and their shoulders exposed. The top half of her skull didn't take, but his dolphins are perfect. He's frowning at that colorful little heart in the mirror when she turns to him. One corner of her mouth quirks upwards in a lopsided smile, "Hey...um...thanks for...you know. Hanging out with me tonight."

"Hey...it was fun. Besides...you know. We're family. And members of the saddest biker gang ever apparently," he flexes his arm for effect. Her reflection laughs.

She's definitely had worse birthdays.
