I want to be the back-up person. The one behind the curtain, behind the scenes. The assistant, the gopher, the grunt.
In school, I'd rather be working the lights or the scenery or the curtain or, because of a lack of anyone else TO do it, the stage manager for the talent show. I was the production manager for the newspaper - I preferred it to writing, although I was the news editor, as well. The PM role was created for me by the adviser - I was just that good at getting the paper ready for bed, and I followed up on everyone else getting their work done on time.
At work now, I far prefer to be working in the background of the websites to being expected to perform on the UI. You wouldn't think that, given how much I use my journals, but it's true. You all are my friends, and they are...strangers.
I think that's why, although my time is far more limited these days (
I'm a background person. But I don't think I'm a wallflower. I don't like being in charge of everything, but I'll take direction on what needs to be done and direct others from there if necessary.
I don't think I'll advance beyond my current job, despite what my boss says. She's got it too together, carrying so much in her head and being cool and collected at the same time (she has her moments, lol). She knows the right way to say things and also WHAT to say. Me, I'd stumble and fall with the weight of all she's carrying - it's why she has two assistants now, me being one of them. But you know, I don't WANT her job. I want someone who can do it WELL to do it, and that someone isn't me.
(No, people who know who I'm talking about, she's not planning on leaving (that I'm aware of), I'm just sayin'...)
I'm nearly forty-one years old. I'm older than John Lennon was when he was murdered. I know myself. I know what my limitations are, my shortcomings, what I can work on and what I just accept as true. Sometimes something new comes along and I have to analyze how I feel about it, what I should be doing with it.
Gods, I think I've hit that middle-age....but I still feel no more than thirty, if that. And how many folks can truly say that when they're older in actual years, eh?
