The Black Manor home is full of victorian decoration and gilded furniture. In keeping with the family motto, only the very finest, purest vanities are used within the house. The sheets are silk and the doilies are spider thread. Vials of the highest, finest, purest blood are worn as jewels, and valued more than rubies. Between the secret passageways that thread their ways between the walls, magicked to change paths every so often, and the family portraits that line every hallway with their accusing, prying eyes, there is never a moment of privacy within the quarters of the Black home.

drawing rooms

Naturally within the Black Manor, there are two sitting rooms, both on the first floor, one for the men and one for the women. The men's drawing room is decorated in a lavish blood red, with chess tables and hunting trophies as pieces of interest. The men's drawing room is also available as an office to any guests who insist on conducting their very important business while on vacation. The men's sitting room also comes complete with its own liquor cabinet and billiards table, for unwinding or entertaining through business talk. Books of particular interest to only the male population at the Manor take up a small bookshelf to the right of the door. Pulling one specific book, however, will open one of the few documented secret passages in the house, this one leading through the walls to the women's sitting room, where the men enjoy eavesdropping. Meanwhile, in the women's sitting room, the fairer sex is free to pursue their hobbies and talents away from the men. Located beneath a private sun room, the women's drawing room contains a white piano, painting supplies, baskets of needlework, and, thanks to the dumb-waiter that leads down to the kitchens, a never-ending supply of tea and teacakes. In a curio against the far wall rests the Noble and Most Ancient Black Family China, the tea set that is the subject of constant warfare between the elder Black women. This room acts as the woman's escape from the pressures of being a wife and mother and the doors are charmed to refuse entrance to men or children.

dining

The formal dining room is also located on the first floor. It is here that all the planned meals occur. Breakfast is open ended, and available until 11:30 in the morning, so all those who enjoy their lie-ins while on vacation may. Lunch is also prone to drop ins and walk throughs, considering the important and busy lives that all the Black family and friends lead. Dinner, however, is served promptly at 7:30 each evening, and all the guests are expected to be in attendance so as to inform each other of their day's adventures. Exceptions are made for the infirm or the called away. Formal dress is preferred but not mandatory, although you run the risk of being subject to the most vicious, but always well-intentioned, gossip at the mouths of the Black women should you show up in less than your evening best. In the event you miss a meal, however, or find what's being served not to your liking, the kitchens are located downstairs in the basement, where another team of house elves is ready and waiting to take short orders. They have all received stern instructions not to dish out sweets at the whims of children, but of course, the house elves are easy to wheedle, threaten, or beat into submission. The hired human help makes grocery runs into town roughly once a week and, like the house elves, are under strict instruction not to allow children to sneak along, but, also like house elves, are easily beaten until giving in.

library

Apart from the private, specifically chosen collection of books within each of the drawing rooms, there is an expansive library taking up the entire second floor of the manor. Organized into sections by topics, and with several small reading rooms, the library is a favourite retreat of Blacks of the more intellectual inclination. It is quite easy to get yourself lost amongst the maze of shelves, or sunken too far into the comfortable plush furniture to ever want to leave this part of the home. However, one look at the family ghost, Faustus Black (died a proud 100 years ago, as he will be glad to inform you) will warn of what happens when one delves too deeply into knowledge.

bedrooms

Bedrooms and suites are located on the third floor. Families vacationing at the Black manor all receive a suite of apartments to themselves, whereas the actual family members all have rooms either to themselves, or to share with a sibling. Boys and girls may not share rooms unless they are married -- in fact, the men's and women's rooms are located on opposite sides of the floor to prevent misbehaviour, although Missus Druella will kindly attest to the rule's spotty enforcement. Within the rooms, fireplaces are kept roaring and beds are turned down by industrious house elves, always available to fulfil any other requests guests may make.

There is nowhere in the world more beautiful -- or more dangerous -- than the private grounds at the Black family vacation home. Between kelpies in the pond, screams in the woods, and the consistent rumor of dragons in the hills, every element of beauty in the scenery that surrounds the manor comes with the sharp edge of death lurking at the edges.

gardens

Like any respectable pureblood family, the Black Family Manor has more than it's fair share of landscaping. Directly behind and to the west of the home are the several gardens. They require quite an amount of upkeep, in large part performed by house elves or hired help. The gardens are home to both magical and nonmagical plants, some of which are poisonous and many of which are deadly. The idle flower plucked can become an instrument of death, so do please keep your hands to yourself. After all, every rose garden has its thorns. In addition to the various and sundry floral life, there are also plenty of wide empty grasses in the safer regions that are perfect for picnics or family lunches when the weather is nice. Also contained within the gardens are the animal menagerie, where various larger pets are kept, the croquet field, and the small half-court quidditch pitch for those who feel so inclined. (Many of the elder Blacks feel quite strongly against the sport of Quidditch -- it's not nearly the same unless one is playing with a live snidget.)

pond

A ten minute's walk beyond the edge of the garden, situated in the northeastern corner of the grounds, is the pond. It's a small, algae growing body of water. There are frogs that live in the cattails along the shore, and kelpies that live in the seaweed at the deeper end. There's a small wooden boat that can allow you to sit at the middle of the pond if you'd like, or, like the many Black children, you can simply wade your way in. A rope swing hangs from the limb of a large oak tree for jumping right into the water on particularly hot summer days.

woods

Surrounding the manor on three of four sides are the woods. The woods are a subject of great dispute for the parents and children who stay at the vacation home. Many of the Black parents insist that it is far too dangerous for their precious little children, but that, naturally, does not stop them from venturing in. It's a standing Halloween tradition for the bravest of the youngest generation to attempt to stay the whole night through inside the forest, although none to date have been able to. The young Miss Bellatrix holds the record. On particular, full mooned nights, a harrowing shriek can occasionally be heard coming from deep inside, but that falls under one of the many things that the family considers to be inappropriate conversation. During the daytime, however, the woods lose some of their mysterious, frightening ambiance, and are slightly more welcoming to exploration. There are many clearings within walking distance, one of which contains a gazebo and chess board. This particular clearing is an excellent place to go when one distinctly wishes to be left alone, especially for children escaping punishment, because the hike towards it is not something mothers in their best dresses would like to attempt.
