Did We Play to Become Only Pawns in the Game?
Corey was visiting Marlow. He'd brought food. Eventually, he headed over alone to one of the other rooms with his bag and knocked.

Kael had been reading a Midgard book, a tale of a human captain's quest for vengeance against a creature called a "whale" when he heard knock. He marked his place and answered the door.

"Oh, hello. You are Cait's brother, Corey, yes?"

"Hello. Yes, that's me. I'm in the neighborhood for Marlow, but I told Argo I'd bring you one of my homemade burgers while I was here." It's a Traditional theological fact that the line of Hercules and the smell of cooked beef go together like asphodel for Persephone or apples at Halloween. But still, Corey has the manners not to assume too much. "If you like burgers. Otherwise, I can always just bring it home to Argo once Marlow and I have had enough."

"I have never had one, but I am not opposed to trying it. Thank you. Please, come in," Kael offers. "You say Argo requested it?"

"Thanks." Corey comes in. "Well, you know how it goes," he says cheerily. "He thought it would be a good idea when he heard I was going. He likes you, you know. Of course, it's Argo." Corey sets down his bag somewhere appropriate and removes the brown-paper wrapped burger. "Cooked it with a combination of local Louisiana seasonings and a few Nova Roman tricks. The veggies are fresh, too. Hope you like it."

"I admit he has a certain..charm to him.I am still getting used to the idea of having a sibling." he accepts the burger, smells it once before taking a bite. "Mmm, it is not bad," he says before taking another bite.

"Thanks," Corey says proudly. "And yeah, siblings can be a weird experience even when you are used to them. Cait complains about me and Rufus all the time, but we all work out okay. And yeah, Argo's got charm. I'll take nice over smart anyday, when hardly any of my people's gods can manage both and plenty can't manage either."

Kael frowned. "I've heard my fair share of stories, which leaves me even less inclined to know my father's side of the family. Well..with perhaps the exception of Argo."

"Yeah, I... you didn't miss much other than Argo. Paranoid, perfectly willing to sabotage themselves because they're too busy working so hard to prevent being sabotaged.... don't think things are important when they are --" Corey shakes it off a little. "Sorry, Dude. I didn't mean to go on a rant. And Argo... well, I love Argo. He's my friend. That keeps it simple."

"Quite all right, Corey." He sighs once. "Though to be fair, I can't say my mother's side of the family is without flaws either."

"Well, who is, really, but I'm sorry to hear that. I don't know anything about the place, I'll admit. How are they on the backstabbing and callous fronts?"

Kael just raised an eyebrow at him. "They are masters of it."

"Thank you, but one adapts. Still, I suppose I owen my father's side of the family one thing," Kael says, lifting his neck to show Corey the long scar across his neck. "When I was twelve years old his blood kept me alive until healers could get to me."

"Yes. Thank you, Corey, but it's something I have been trying harder to come to terms with," Kael informed. "I used to go out of my way to hide this scar, but I'm coming to accept it."

"Good for you, man. Might as well face stuff. Even when it stinks." A thoughtful look. "Maybe especially when it stinks. Only way anything ever gets different, right? Tables turned and all."

Corey shrugs. "Had a bit of a kick in the teeth about the world recently. Nobody's fault but my own; I'm a very lucky, very spoiled guy. I mean, I've always known that. I just... got some dots connected."

"I see." Kael reaches over to his cooler and hands offers Corey an orange soda. "I do not drink alcohol and I'm not certain of your own age, but you are welcome to one of my drinks."

"Thank you very much. Soda's perfect. For the record, I'm nearly 20, and being from Nova Roma, I was raised on three-to-one wine." Which is technically alcohol. "Never have anything stronger, but that's personal taste as much as the law." He lives in New Orleans, with among others Nick, Irina, and Argo. It's definitely a matter of taste. He drinks. "Thanks." He says again. "But yeah. A great deal of the running of the world is done by jerks. No arguing that. Except there is plenty of arguing to do about it."

"In other words there s little use complaining because they won't change, but at the same time the problem warrants complaining?"

"Well, yes. But complaining itself wasn't really the part I was thinking of. More working. If the cosmological chess games are ignoring the things that really ought to be handled becuase those things only matter to the pawns, maybe some of us just need to walk across the board, get things done." He shrugs. "I got plenty of work to do, is the thing. I don't now how much being spoiled and naive was helping there or not."

Kael just listens as he sips his own drink. "I believe I understand."
