Test Scene
As incongruous as it might seem in the face of all his other cultivated skills, Adric Fandralsson always found gardening to be strangely meditative. Pulling weeds, managing seedlings, warding off pests, harvesting. Even if it was only his little patch of earth behind their home, Adric treasured it. And when all was said and done, he did grow some very nice leeks and cabbages. Onions were still a bit trickier, and the crops of berries varied from year to year, but he'd managed quite nicely.

So, anyone that comes across the ranger will find him looking very much at peace, gardening trowel in hand, as he works at liberating a particularly nasty weed that had sprung up during his most recent absence. The acid drakes had been harder to track than he'd anticipated, and leading the more heavily armed individuals to them, without alerting their quarry, had been an even greater challenge. Still, it had all been settled in good form, with no casualties, and acceptable injuries; and Adric now had a set of blow-darts carved from drake-fang among his equipment.

He'd spent the last while on duty in the farther reaches of the realm, as evidenced by his winter gear and furred cloak, but despite having been called back recently, he hadn't had the opportunity to see his brother. Their schedules just hadn't allowed it. Casually walking up behind him, Brandr looks over the younger man's shoulder to see what he was up to.

"Weeds particularly difficult this time of year brother?" He couldn't claim to understand Adric's love of gardening, but everyone had their own hobbies. At least this one produced some good food.

"This one is especially fierce." Adric gets the point of the trowel beneath it's root-ball, finally. "I'd have been able to pull it by hand, had I had time to tend to it before my most recent work in the field."

He doesn't rush, giving the weed due care in its extraction. No sense having it drop seeds that would put down roots of their own. He disposes of it, then stands, brushing his hands off before clapping one to his brother's shoulder. "Well met, brother. How fare the Hawks?"

"Work has a way of getting in the way of things," he smiled understandingly as he watched Adric dig out the root with interest. It had always fascinated him, the care with which Adric dealt with his garden.

"Well met to you too," he chuckles and claps his own hand to his brother's other shoulder. "Well enough. New postings shalt start soon they say. Until then I am free for a short time. And you? How fares your work?"

Adric gives a polite nod and then frees himself, making a lap of the garden to check if the berries are ready for picking. The latest nets he'd laid over the bushes seemed to be keeping most of the magpies off.

"Quietly, and efficiently, as always. Acid drakes this time. Took me the better part of a week to find their den, and nearly as long to lead the hunting party there without rousing them." He smiles, patting one of the pouches on his belt. "All sorted neatly, though."

"Ist good to hear. And even better to see thee well brother. This work suits you." Brandr carefully treads around the garden, surveying his brother's work. "What ist the crop of the season this time? Thine last yield turned out well I have heard."

"At least as well as yours suits you." He replies calmly, picking a few berries which ripened early and tossing them gently to Brandr. "Berries, and leeks. The latter will make a very nice porridge, I imagine." Adric can cook well enough to take care of himself in the wilderness, and maintain his health, but many of the more complicated applications of his crops tend to elude him. The women and cooks always seem to appreciate them though.

"It keeps my mind clear when I am at home." He stoops to examine a leaf, gently removing a pest and placing it on a different plant, where it will do less harm to the food and more damage to weeds. "Keeps me close to the earth." He lays a hand to the ground, sighing in approval at the coolness of the soil.

He catches the berries then rolls a few between gloved fingers, examining them out of curiosity, before tossing them in his mouth one at a time. "I look forward to it then."

"I am afraid, brother, that the art of sword fighting is more in mine vein for mind clearing. It helps more than most think. But to each their own. Mayhap during one of mine days of leave we may spar again briefly."

"I should find that most entertaining, brother. Praytell, should we meet with matching blades, or do you have the mettle to face my knives at last?" A small smile tugs one corner of Adric's lips, as he allows himself a few berries as well.

"I should fully understand if you wish our sparring to be away from the eyes of the other Hawks. I would not wish to damage their morale by seeing their comrade bested."

Brandr chuckles. "How confident thou art brother. I have always been well versed with knives. They art mine secondary weapon. After the sword of course. And thou seem to forget I have bested thine knives before."

"Nay, their morale shalt not be affected by our spar. For besting thee shalt hardly increase mine standing in front of them. Though mayhap a handicap shalt increase thine chances," he smirks, gently taunting his brother.

"To handicap myself would increase mine chances of making it a fair fight, one would suppose. Perhaps if I were to put out the remaining eye as well..."

Brandr frowned. He only brought up his brother's eye when he felt he needed to make a point or scold him. But he did not like jokes about the Troll Incident. "With the way ye swings thine sword, some days it ist a surprise thine other eye remains."

"And with the way my brother swings his own, it is a wonder he still has both his feet." Adric replies without missing a beat, as the smile begins to grow a bit wider.

"If that were the case then father shouldst be one of the few in the nine realms left with feet. The rest of ye shalt have lost thine arms too for lack of any skill."

"The newest recruits to the Crimson Hawks will surely know that practice is in session when they see Brandr Fandralsson's own head roll 'cross the grounds. More the wonder will be that he was practicing by himself."

"And shortly after they shalt find Adric Fandralsson in his garden, poisoned by some plant in his garden unknown. And then Ragnarok shalt begin without the both of us."

"You always insist on destroying the world. So wasteful." Adric says, without even a dramatic sigh, as he walks back to his brother and gives him a hug. "It is good to see you again. Are you still running about with that farrier's daughter?"

"Nay, I defend, simply not the parts you hold in esteem," he responds with a small smile. The hug surprises him a bit but he returns it warmly and gives his younger brother an extra pat on the back as they separate. "Not since the last change in posts. And thee? Hath thee found a girl yet? Surely ye must have won one over in mine absence."

"Several, if you insist on asking, but generally only in--" He clears his throat. "--passing. My training, and the requests for my assistance, keep me just as busy as your duties to the Hawks."

He takes a step back and appraises his brother. "There is something... about you. Some shift in your gait." He circles him, his eye seeming like something other than human in its intensity. He knocks one of his boots against a heel of his brother's. "No injuries of any consequence... perhaps I'm imagining it." He shrugs a shoulder. "Come. We'll wash up, and I'll pour the first round."

"I understand, it ist much the same with me. There ist little time, duty must come first."

Brandr bursts out laughing. "I hath changed brother? Pray tell me how." With an amused smile he waits for his brother to finish circling him. "Mayhap it ist that I am home after a long absence. But yes, drinking ist a fine idea. One of thine few," he teased. He reaches out to give Adric a hearty pat on the shoulder as they walk away from the garden. "We hath much to converse on, it shalt need more than one round."

"Something hath changed, or something is about to. I hath been in the forest perhaps too long of late.

And drinking is ever your only fine idea, brother." Another dry smile.

"I shall pour the mead, you can see if thou can find the cask of good ale Father won off Volstagg in their last bet."
