ASK TONKS!
hello friends and welcome to ask tonks which will serve the purpose that the ask nagini post did!

- the harry potter universe as written and explained by jkr
- the sorters universe as written and explained and decided by the mod team
- the logistics of being a witch or wizard in modern muggle society
- any folklore you may have questions about
- any abilities you make have questions about
- anything else you could think of
- don't ever call me nymphadora if you want an answer.

my main role is to answer your questions but i will also monitor anons from now on in addition to the great mod team we have already. if i don't answer your questions right away, don't worry because i will get to them as soon as possible! if i feel like i can't provide a correct answer for you, i will consult the other mods before replying and if i feel the question is a big one and answer requires all mods to agree then it will be discussed with them prior to answering you.

ask tonks is now open for business and my current hair colour is: RED WITH RAGE!!!!!

q: i think this was answered before but can a character have any religious belief just the same as muggles would or would it be out of character to talk about it?
a: religion and magic exist pretty noninclusively, so witches and wizards can have whatever beliefs exactly as muggles do! it mostly becomes a matter of how your religious beliefs and magic co-exist in your own head.

q: dear nagini if someone is a very new animagus/just done training, is it possible for them to get stuck mid morph?
a: definitely! the problem with magical abilities is that they are very influenced by your emotions, as evidenced by the bouts of magic performed by young witches and wizards. and inexperience also plays a role, so being new to it means you could very well get stuck mid-shift.

q: NAGINI what are your views on the exrtra ciricular classes as see on the hpwiki? like alchemy, earth studies, etc and would we have them at sorters or not? if so do you think maybe we could either get a headcount or something in a mod post possibly, since i know you guys originally didn't want to set down schedules because they might be limiting but... I don't know it just sounded like fun TY IN ADVANCE
a: my understanding is that anything listed under "elective" classes is something that takes place during a classroom period. alchemy in particular is a "if there is a high enough demand" class, which is to say unless a certain number of students inquired and would be proficient enough to take the course, it's not offered. otherwise i believe the other elective classes are consistently there. in order for alchemy to be an offered course, in the interests of "reality" there would be need for a headcount and basic run through. i myself am willing to deal with this after i get a chance to talk to the other mods, so we'll get back to you asap about it!

anything listed under extra-curricular is something that takes place out of your schedules class blocks, with the exception of flying for first years. apparition is restricted to those who will be 17 by the time the next examination takes place for licensing, but otherwise they are a bit of a free for fall, with the exception of advanced arithmancy. also magical theory appears to be a first year requirement, and from my understanding is more of a scientific/lecture class than one in which you perform any actual magic.

also regarding the set schedules, i do remember it was a prior mod who felt it would be too much of an issue to produce a "standard" schedule for each year, but again, if everyone wanted and the mods agreed, i'm sure we could work something out. it mostly poses a problem for people who already created their own schedules and the hard work they put into them, so while a basic guideline of what everyone else in your year is doing when could possibly come together, an actual set schedule of "this is at this time in these blocks" probably wouldn't be very probable until the seventh years have completed their schooling and we could implement it for sixth-turning-seventh years and new coming sixth years. HOWEVER a basic scheduling tabling for the extra-curriculars just so we don't have twelve different sets of muggle art classes could be possible if the demand is high enough.

all in all, i'd say give the mods a chance to talk it all out and we'll get the extra classes put into place for everyone

q: can we have alchemy as an available elective? it's on the wikia/pottermore http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Alchemy_%28class%29 maybe one of the more science inclined professors could teach it?
a: i'm a bit lazy so i'm gonna c&p from the comment above: "alchemy in particular is a "if there is a high enough demand" class, which is to say unless a certain number of students inquired and would be proficient enough to take the course, it's not offered. otherwise i believe the other elective classes are consistently there. in order for alchemy to be an offered course, in the interests of "reality" there would be need for a headcount and basic run through. i myself am willing to deal with this after i get a chance to talk to the other mods, so we'll get back to you asap about it!"

so just let me get a chance to talk to our other mods and i'll get back to you with it!
