NAME: Hannah Alice Abbott
AGE: 16, born June 2nd, 1980
HOUSE/YEAR: Hufflepuff, Year 12
SOCIAL STATUS: The surname Abbott, which Hannah has inherited from her mother, has long been associated with working class families in Yorkshire. And not the hard-working ones, either, but rather the ones that get thrown out of the pub at closing time after a few too many pints. Hannah is at Hogwarts on a full scholarship, based on her linguistic ability, and aims to be the first Abbott to break out of the working class into which they were all born.
SEXUALITY: Boys and all that goes with them have never been high on her list of priorities, but she's most definitely heterosexual.

A P P E A R A N C E

Hannah has always had what people would describe as a “cute” appearance, rather than a conventionally pretty one. With her round face and long blonde hair, she'll always be the baby-faced one of her circle of friends. Standing at 5' 2 ½'' (the half is very important to her) she doesn't cut a very tall figure, and has taken to standing on her tiptoes when around taller people to try and feel more on their level. She'd wear heels, if only she could master them. It took her several years to realise that the pigtails she used to wear her hair in made her look younger, and has subsequently ditched them.

Although Hannah's short, no-one could ever call her waif-like. She has a large bust which would look unusual on her small frame, if it weren't for the fact that she's got the hips to match. She's very self-conscious of her curves, and dresses rather conservatively. Jeans, long-sleeved tops and sensible shoes are what she can usually be found in, with the occasional skirt for a special occasion. Hannah would much rather be noticed for her personality than her looks or outfits. Not that she's got any clue about fashion, of course. She matches, and her clothes are functional, and that's all that matters to her.

There's no denying that Hannah Abbott usually has a very sunny disposition. She's an eternal optimist, and has the ability to see the best in everyone. She's not one to believe silly rumours, and when confronted with them she will always seek to find out the truth for herself. Hannah hates seeing people upset, and always aims to put a smile on the face of those near her, through whatever means necessary. Usually she keeps herself to herself, and many people believe her to be shy. However, she is simply trying to draw the attention away from herself, as she aims to be the sidekick, rather than the hero. She can prattle on a bit when she has something that she believes needs to be said, though.

Not even someone with the sunniest of sunny dispositions can stay happy all the time, however, and Hannah is no exception to this. She has a tendency to worry about people and things more than she should, even things that she can't control. Although she hopes for the best, she often expects the very worst and can often become panicky. All her friends know about this, and they know that it's not easy to calm her down when the worst case scenarios in her head get out of control. A few deep breaths and a cup of tea is usually all it takes for her to start thinking clearly again. Due to the fact she always expects the worst, Hannah hates breaking rules. She knows the rules are there for a reason and always hates the thought of things going wrong. If she can help it, she'll always make sure other people stick to the rules too. It's for their own good!

Hannah is one of the most reliable people in the world. If she's meeting someone at a certain time, she'll be there five minutes early, no matter what stands in her way. If she's asked to do something, she'll do it straight away, without question. However, this does not make her a pushover. While she'll let her friends push her around as much as they want, acquaintances and people she doesn't know well do not get the same privileges. While she still might do favours for them, she'll consider their motivations behind it and while wanting to please people, she doesn't want to be used. Hannah is also very good at keeping secrets. Anything you tell her, whether you swear her to secrecy or simply ask her to keep it to herself, she'll obey absolutely. Even secrets where it may be better to tell someone about them, Hannah will keep her mouth shut, even if questioned or threatened.

Being the oldest in a large family, Hannah naturally has a very strong nurturing instinct. She's very motherly, and always looks after the younger students. She's well known for giving calm, rational advice to those who need it – whenever she's not panicking about something herself, of course! As such, she acts very much as an agony aunt to the other Hufflepuffs particularly, although she's very much guilty of not being able to take her own advice, and needs someone to spoon feed it back to her whenever she gets worked up over something. Hannah is a realist, and while she is eternally optimistic, she knows that not everything in life is sunshine, buttercups and rainbows. She's not had the rosiest of childhoods and as a result, she's really not as naïve as she maybe first seems.

Hannah isn't a leader, she's more the type that's happy to be led. It's maybe her dislike of the limelight that causes her preference for doing all the leg work behind the scenes without taking any of the glory. However, when she is thrust into a position of responsibility, like she was when she was given her prefect badge, she'll do her very best to be a worthy leader and not lead anyone astray. She can be quite indecisive at times, wondering what's the best course of action to take, and worrying about the outcome should she make the wrong choice. As such, she often needs help in her decision making, and it's times like these that she tends to lean on Ernie.

In a nutshell, Hannah Abbott is sweet enough to make your teeth ache, rather prone to excessive worrying, painfully loyal to her friends, and always ready to give anyone a fair chance.

L I K E S & D I S L I K E S

LIKES:
& The Sound of Music. It's her most favourite film ever, and she's watches it religiously almost every week. Plus, she dresses up as a nun to every costume party she attends.
& Eastenders. It's like a form of escapism for her.
& Swearing at people in foreign languages. She can now insult people who are deserving of it in nine different languages.
& Chocolate cake. It's a vice of hers. One that she knows she shouldn't indulge often, but she just can't help herself.
& Early mornings. She's just not the type to lie in.
& Singing. While she doesn't exactly have the voice of a lark, she does enjoy stretching her vocal chords.

DISLIKES:
& Risk-takers. They make her worry too much.
& Her step-father. She's never liked him.
& Animals. Of all shapes and sizes.
& Competitive sports. They only promote rivalry and arguments!
& Smoking. It's just disgusting. Her mother does it, and the smell is disgusting.
& Morning chapel. She's been brought up an atheist.
& Angry, loud, rock music. She just doesn't get how you can dance to it!

DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: Hannah's aim in life is actually not to have any defining characteristics, so she can fade into the background slightly and get on with her life without any unwanted attention. However, she does have several things that separates her from those around her. A lifetime of looking out for others has given her an extreme selflessness, and a tendency to worry rather a lot about the people around her. It is these qualities that make her a good prefect, coupled with her need to always stick to the rules and toe the line.

INSIDE SCOOP:
& Hannah's hatred of animals stems from the fact that she's extremely allergic to cats. It's only cats that actually sets her allergies off, but after several nasty attacks she's developed a hatred of all animals with fur. It's not such a secret with Sally-Anne as a roommate, but she likes to keep it under wraps.
& Hannah can never be bothered to wear a bra. It's nothing to do with feminism, they're just itchy. And she hated it in year 9 when she first started wearing one and the guys would take turns trying to undo it.
& Although she pretends that guys don't interest her, she secretly can't wait until she finds her own Captain Von Trapp. And if he looks like Christopher Plummer, well that's just a bonus.
& She's harboured an extremely secret crush on Professor Savage for the last three years. And was extremely gutted when she couldn't fit one of his classes into her schedule this year.

H I S T O R Y

When Michael Church found out his girlfriend Jennifer Abbott was pregnant, he didn't stick around. They were both nineteen years old, still living with their respective parents in Bradford, and didn't exactly have money to burn. Jennifer was granted a council flat in the inner-city, but Michael wouldn't take her calls. While the young mother-to-be sometimes considered getting rid of her baby, she couldn't go through with it, and Hannah was born in early June, 1980. Jennifer was unsure what surname to bestow upon her young daughter, and it was only some persuasion from her mother Andrea that caused Hannah Abbott to not be named Hannah Church.

Hannah doesn't have many memories from before the age of six, which isn't much of a loss. They didn't live in poverty, but Jennifer didn't work and lived on benefits, so the little family lived frugally. She adored her young daughter, and frequently took her to the park in a pram or pushchair, dressed her up in pretty little dresses and did her hair up in pigtails. She was introduced to her father only once, but although she was a decidedly cute little girl, she didn't make much of an impression on him. Jennifer started seeing a new bloke, Harry Chester, when Hannah was three. When she was five, the twins Jake and Robert joined the family.

From a young age, Hannah doted after her brothers. She would do everything for them that she could, from bottle feeding to playing with them and pulling funny faces to make them laugh. She was at primary school by now, and was bright enough to enjoy the work and put her all into it. She was the sole bridesmaid at her mother's wedding to Harry in 1986, and the family soon expanded more, with the additions of Greg in 1987 and Harry Junior in 1989. Things took a turn for the worse, however, when Harry lost his job in the south Yorkshire coal mines. The family now had no means of support, and things weren't looking brilliant.

Hannah may only have been nine, but she knew something was wrong. She knew better than to ask questions, though, and carried on with her tasks – going to school, looking after her brothers, keeping out of the way. Her step-father was getting home later and later every night, and her mother never seemed to be in the mood to chat. An incident where Harry had had a bit too much to drink and took out his frustrations on his wife resulted in a black eye for Jennifer and the two youngest boys being taken temporarily into care. With the bad mood in the household only worsening, Hannah spent much of her time in her room, working away at her homework. It was in this way that she to excel at her school work.

The aptitude for languages that Hannah developed stemmed from such an innocent aim. In year 6, classes were started in Hannah's school to teach the students the basics of French. She found herself really enjoying being able to speak in another language, however basic the level was they were learning at. She had the idea when she was tucking the twins in one night that if she taught them what she was learning, they could talk together privately without their parents understanding them. Greg and Harry Junior had by now been returned to the household, but they were too young to be in on this secret. Harry had never really accepted Hannah as his daughter, and had always kept her at arms length. She sensed his distance and kept her own, only talking to him whenever needed. If she could have a secret language with the twins, she wouldn't be bothered by him.

After setting to work consolidating the French she already knew, Hannah started teaching it to Jake and Robert. Bored with the slow rate they were learning in school, she took a few books out of the local library, and on a whim, also took out books on learning German and Spanish. The boys made very little progress and eventually made their distaste for languages clear to their sister, but Hannah's interest had been raised. After studying the books intensely, the school noticed her speedy progress in the basic French lessons they had provided. After talking to Hannah and finding out exactly how she had been spending her time recently, they were amazed. After a quick chat with Hannah's mother, they submitted Hannah's name to a number of schools for scholarships in the languages area.

As it was late on, most scholarships at the schools they enquired into had already been filled. However, Hogwarts College had a late cancellation, and showed an interest in Hannah. After an interview and an informal exam, Hannah was granted a full scholarship at Hogwarts, commencing in September 1991. Everything happened rather fast, and it didn't really sink in with Hannah that she wasn't going to the local comprehensive with all her schoolfriends until September approached, and bags had to be packed. When leaving day arrived, Hannah hid herself in her room. It took a lot of persuasion from both her mother and grandmother to come out, on the basis that she should at least go to the school, and if she didn't like it she could go straight back home. Once she had arrived at Hogwarts, she was so nervous she was almost sick. When it came to sorting, there was no question that she was going to be in Hufflepuff. After unpacking her belongings in her new dorm, Hannah didn't join in the excited chatter of her new roommates. Instead, she drew the hangings around her bed and cried herself to sleep.

Weeks and months passed, and Hannah started to enjoy life at Hogwarts. She wasn't a whizz at sports by any means, but the lessons were fun, the other students were friendly (with the exception of a few Slytherins) and although she missed her family, she made plenty of friends. She became particular friends with the other girls in her dormitory, as well as Justin Finch-Fletchley and Ernie Macmillan, Hufflepuff boys in her year. Hannah's first few years at Hogwarts were very unremarkable. She went to lessons, did her homework, hung out with her friends and generally had a good time. She didn't make much of a dint on the Hogwarts social scene, but she found her niche and used it well.

Upon receiving rather good grades in her GCSEs, Hannah chose her A Levels with the aim of studying Law at university. Her main aim in life is to make the world a slightly better place for working class people like her family, as while her and her brothers lives weren't really tragic or that difficult, she observed her step-father's struggle after the closure of the mines and feels there are lots of advances to be made in the support system. Not to mention the way that people often look down at the working class – just look at half the legacy kids! Watch out world, Hannah Abbott is aiming for a change.
