"So, I'll see you there?"
Tallie nodded and smiled at every person she passed that day in Hogsmeade, revelling in the sound of the snow crunching under her feet as she made her way to the Three Broomsticks. She was alone, but it didn't bother her; it was planned that she would meet Wes in the pub for their first offical 'date', and the excitement and nerves in her chest made it feel like a flight of butterflies were trying to escape. Once inside the warmth, she shook the snow off her cloak and bought herself a butterbeer, with which she settled in a cosy corner of the always-busy tavern. Though she tried to keep her eyes off the door, she couldn't help but hopefully steal glances at it every few seconds.

Wes had jumped the steps outside his home in his haste to get to the Three Broomsticks, and was taking strides as long as his legs would allow to get there as quickly as he could. Per his mum's request, had to come by and see the family for at least a little bit. They weren't aware he had a date but he could tell that the absence of Chase had begun to spark Tilo's suspicion, so he took that as his cue to leave.

Luckily Wes didn't live too far away from the pub and he found himself outside its door in fifteen minutes. Taking a breath, he entered, and looked around for Tallie. Able to see over the heads of most of the crowd, he spotted her sitting in a corner and, grinning, maneuvered himself through the groups of people.

"Sorry," he said, sitting down and pulling his hat off of his head and shrugging off his cloak. "My family's completely mad. Thought it'd be wiser to fend them off before meeting you here lest they come after my head."

At the sound of Wes' voice Tallie looked up with a wide smile, moving over to give him room to sit down. "It's no problem, I have been waiting here long." It was true: she had made sure she'd meandered down to Hogsmeade as slowly as she could persuade herself to, so that she could avoid the anxious waiting part once she was sitting down. "I wouldn't mind a mad family sometimes - mine's so boring, it makes the holidays a real drag. It must be weird though, living so close to them yet never seeing them?" Tallie asked curiously, thinking of her own family situation. She lived in the south of England, so whenever she came to Hogwarts it felt a million miles away: the idea of her parents living just around the corner seemed like an odd one.

"I'd offer to give you mine," Wes said, shaking his head. "but I wouldn't wish them upon anyone, least of someone I actually like." He smiled warmly at her as he took a sip of his butterbeer, and leaned back in his seat. "Oh, my mum makes sure I see them," he said. "Many a Howler have I received from that woman for not gracing them with my presence during Hogsmeade visits. It's the curse of being the only boy -- my sisters could easily trick her into thinking she'd already seen them as there are so many of them, but of course I tend to stick out a bit."

He looked at her and considered what she said about her own family. "Yours can't be that bad," he said, and then smirked. "I imagine you had to have earned that sassy attitude from somewhere."

"Oh, so that's the noise I always hear in the Great Hall?" Tallie said with a smirk, "Though I can't disagree that you stick out - you're, what, seven feet tall?" As she said this she looked him up and down to exaggerate the difference in their heights. Though she always took the mickey out of him for it, she secretly loved that he was tall: it was like he was there standing over her to protect her.

"I do not have a sassy attitude!" Tallie protested in what was, on the contrary, a very sassy attitude, accompanied by a nudge in Wes' direction with her shoulder. "No, they're very dull and unexciting, my parents. University professors the both of them, so all they ever go on about is their subjects and the importance of a good education. It drives me a bit stir crazy in the holidays, being stuck with them the whole time."

"Yeah, seven and a half," Wes said, nodding in all seriousness. "The woman even made sure to stretch me out so that I'm about a foot taller than everyone else, so it's not even physically possible for me to hide. Cruel, eh?"

He grinned as she nudged him. "Well, that at least explains being a Prefect," he said, glancing at her badge. "If you're looking for entertainment, you can feel free to drop by my house sometime during the holidays. I can't guarantee that you won't fear for your very life but I suppose it beats talking about school during break." Wes hoped that his dropping in the invitation sounded subtle enough.

"Wow, that's very impressive. You should try out for basketball with stats like that," Tallie said, keeping up the idea that both of them were talking seriously, which was of course not the case - she loved their sarcastic style of conversation, because usually when Tallie would say something in her solemn, sarcastic manner people would take her literally, then try and feel clever by correcting her. But, Wes understood her perfectly.

Her eyes brightened when Wes mentioned that she could visit over the Christmas holidays, though she tried not to let on quite how much the idea excited her. "I might have you take you up on that offer, actually, especially since I was considering staying at school this Christmas, so I'd only be around the corner. Anyway, you know how I think that danger adds some excitement to one's life," Tallie said with a wink, thinking back to their first encounter in the owlery. It felt so long ago now, but it had only been a couple of months.

"I've asked for them to offer it at school," Wes continued playing along. "But they seemed to think I'd just make all the players look bad seeing as I'd barely need to jump." Wes shook his head to show this was not true at all. Sports had never really been his forte, though he did -- badly -- play cricket every now and again with his dad and uncles.

He brightened, however, at her accepting his offer and he nodded his head to her last statement. "Indeed, I remember," he said, smiling in response to her wink. He propped his elbow on the table, resting his cheek in his palm and brushed his other hand against hers lightly.

"Of course, of course, we don't want to ruin the rest of the school's self-esteem - that's why I'm not on the quidditch team, naturally." Though Tallie was trained in the art of sarcasm, that lie proved too much and a small giggle escaped her. Her performance on a broom truly was atrocious, and twice during her first year flying lessons she had ended up in the hospital wing so that the nurse could fix the minor bones she'd managed to break.

Tallie smiled and looked down at their hands when she felt Wes' touch hers, and in response she stroked the side that rested against hers with her little finger, looking up at his expression. From the way she tilted her chin up to keep eye contact, she noticed that she had moved closer to him while they had been talking. "So, what is exactly so lethal about your family? Because if it's just that they're a bunch of girls, in case you haven't noticed I also happen to be a girl, so I'm pretty used to them by now."

"I think it's quite noble of us, really," he said, his voice a bit quieter now that she was sitting a little closer to him. Wes didn't move his hand, but his smile grew slightly wider at her response.

"What isn't lethal about them?" he said, laughing a bit. "They're a bit better now that we're older but when it's just us at home, it's running around, yelling, gossiping about Bollywood celebrities, blah, blah. Of course I get thrown in the middle. For some reason they think I enjoy it. I've been trying to convince them I'm a boy for years now, but they won't have it."

"Well, we are as honourable as they come," she said with a shrug as if it was obvious, taking a swig of her butterbeer and shuddering at the sudden warmth. Tallie was utterly content at that moment, with Wes and in a lovely atmosphere.

"Maybe it's all the time you spend with Chase that confuses them, I mean, you two are very close," she teased him, grinning, "maybe you need me round to show them otherwise." Tallie looked down then, a little embarrassed; she always forgot to think before she spoke when she was with Wes.

Wes' mouth dropped open in amused shock. "Oh yeah," he said. "I'm sneaking out right now, actually. If he knew I was here with someone else, I'd have to sleep on the couch tonight." He laughed at the mere image. He stole a sideways glance at Tallie. "If that is what's confusing them though, then I suppose it would be a bit useful to keep you around."

"Oh, so you're cheating on Chase with me, are you? Morally, I don't think I can be part of a thing like that," Tallie's tone was scandalised, and she mimed starting to get up and leave, before laughing and settling down in her seat again. "Well, that's sorted then. You can introduce me to your 'mad' family, and you can prove you are in fact a member of the male species." Tallie was pleased with this result, shown by her accompanying grin.

"Here I thought you enjoyed a bit of danger?" Wes said, mimicking her scandalized tone. "I feel so lied to." He laughed as she sat back down and nodded. "I'm glad we have an arrangement," he said, taking a sip of his drink and looking at her from over his mug. "It's always nice to mix business with pleasure."

"Danger yes, breaking poor Chase's heart no. You can't use my reckless nature as an excuse to go around deceiving your best friend!" Tallie admonished him, and she wagged a finger threateningly. They knew they were both joking, but she loved their mock arguments. "So, if that's the business finished with, then ..." She let her voice trail off, and she raised her eyebrows suggestively, a half smile on her lips.

Wes looked at her wagging finger and back at her, raising his eyebrows in amusement. "I know the poor bloke looks like a pansy, but he can handle it, don't worry," he said reassuringly.

The corner of Wes' mouth lifted in a side smile and he looked at her innocently. "What have you got in mind?"

Tallie frowned as if in thought, and said, "Well, I guess that's okay ... either way though, let's not ruin his peaceful state of mind, shall we?" She raised a finger to her lips in a 'shh'-ing motion, looking as beatific as she could.

At Wes' question Tallie shrugged, widening her eyes. "Surprise me," she suggested, her head cocked to one side. She knew she wasn't playing fair, but then she had never said she would.

"Don't know if that would be wise," he said, looking around at the rest of the pub and then back at her, with a coy grin. "In a family institution like this one."

Tallie giggled, feeling ever so devious. She couldn't but think, this is what being a teenager is all about. "Well, maybe you'll just have to give me a teeny, tiny example of what you were thinking of," she said quietly, subconsciously leaning further towards him.

Wes gave her a well-if-you're-sure look and he leaned forward til their faces were so close, his lips brushed lightly against hers as he spoke. "This is about as basic as I can get," he said softly, before kissing her once and sitting up straight again.

Tallie's eyes fluttered closed when Wes moved closer, and her heart was thumping, so loudly that she felt certain that Wes must be able to hear it as surely as she did. Even as he kissed her, her lips were curved in a small smile: it felt so good to be there, with him, knowing that he wanted to be here as much as she did. As she felt Wes move away she opened her eyes again, sighing happily. "Well, I'm glad we had the same idea in mind," she said faintly, leaning back and turning her head to look at Wes.
