Fanmix: My Ain True Love (3/3)
Medium: TV
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Subject: Laura Roslin/William Adama
Title: My Ain True Love
Warnings: Spoilers abound.
Notes: A mix in three parts; hers, his, and "hell, these songs remind me of them and I want them on there somewhere but I can't find a place to fit them--aw, screw it, I'll just make an extra mix."
This is part three, or the outtakes, now with bonus Billy-and-Roslin song! Part one is here, part two is here.

Part III: Antebellum

1) Suffragette, Nina Gordon
So don't try to stone me
You don't own me, and baby, you don't know me yet
Don't try to break me, you can't take me
'Cause baby I'm a suffragette
You cannot fight me, you don't have to like me
You don't even know me yet
Don't try to break me, you can't take me
'Cause baby I'm a suffragette

This was a close contender for Laura Roslin's theme song, but Indigo Girls won out. We'll just say that this is Laura in ass-kicking, arguing-with-Bill mode.

2) Grey Sky Eyes, Carbon Leaf
So I'll try to not act so suprised
I'll feel my way, I'll underplay
All my curiosity and hide
All the questions in my skin
...You say, "You must realize that my grey sky eyes
Neither rain, nor they glow... now you know"

I think this song speaks for itself. I place it late season 1 or season 2, post-Kobol pre-Cain.

3) Antebellum, Vienna Teng
I know the border lines we drew between us
Keep the weapons down, keep the wounded safe;
I know our antebellum innocence
Was never meant to see the light of our armistice.
But how much would I give to have it back again?
How much did we lose to live this way?

I happen to like Vienna Teng. Anyway. Unfinished Business, Bill's speech. I always wondered what happened after that, between him and Laura.

4) Move Along, All-American Rejects
Your hands are shaking cold
Your hands are mine to hold
Speak to me, when all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through

This is the way they support each other and play as a team, both before and after all that coup and mutiny nonsense. Seriously, they're already married as of Bastille Day. Dunno why it took them so long to admit it.

5) Gravity, Vienna Teng
hey love
that's the name we've long held back
from the core of truth
so don't turn away now
I am turning in revolution
these are the scars that silence carved
on me

Okay, so I really like Vienna Teng. This song is so them, anyway: all the silence and yet the certain knowledge that they pull on each other.

6) The Answer To Our Lives, Backstreet Boys
This world is not at ease
We seem to hide the truth
Thinking there's only so much we can really do
It's up to you and me
To fix our destinies
The journey's here so let's take a stand
And we're not gonna take any more
Can we try to erase all the pain

I am only mildly apologetic about including the Backstreet Boys, because this song works so damn well. Seriously. Listen with an open mind, young padawan.

7) Soon Love Soon, Vienna Teng
(Soon love soon)
We will find illumination in unnatural light
(Soon love soon)
You will travel a thousand miles without leaving my sight
(Soon love soon)
We will find we never knew hatred ran so deep
(Soon love soon)
Such a wide, wide chasm of faith to leap

Seriously, Vienna Teng is awesome, you guys. This is season 4 after Revelations, trying to keep themselves together and everyone else together and maybe work out an agreement with the Cylons and keep Laura from dying and somehow, in all of that, they find a kind of peace.

8) Ache For You, Ben Lee
There's no rhyme and there's no reason
You're the secret in the back of my skull
There's no logic, so please believe me
Our love's confusing but it never gets dull

This is just them. I got nothin'.

9) Harbor, Vienna Teng
Sail your sea, meet your storm
All I want is to be your harbor
The light in me will guide you home
All I want is to be your harbor

I REALLY LIKE VIENNA TENG OKAY STOP JUDGING. Ahem.

10) Falling For the First Time, Barenaked Ladies
Anyone perfect must be lying, anything easy has its cost
Anyone plain can be lovely, anyone loved can be lost
What if I lost my direction?
What if I lost sense of time?
What if I nursed this infection?
Maybe the worst is behind
It feels just like I'm falling for the first time

I also really like BNL. So should you, they're great. Anyway, I know that Bill and Laura have been in love before, but I also think that this is where it ends, for both of them. Just like falling for the first time.

11) Something To Talk About, Bonnie Raitt
Maybe they're seeing, something we don't, Darlin'
Let's give them something to talk about
Let's give them something to talk about
Let's give them something to talk about
How about love?

You cannot tell me that people weren't gossiping about those two. Especially not after they (only metaphorically, to my sorrow) kissed and made up on Kobol.
(...so there is kissin'?) (dammit, Firefly, this is not your fanmix)

12) It's Too Late To Turn Back Now, Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose
It's too late to turn back now.
I believe, I believe, I believe I'm fallin' in love
Oh, it's too late to turn back now.
I believe, I believe, I believe I'm falling in love

Self-explanatory, I believe. And yes, this was originally the companion to "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You," but then the timing didn't work out, so it got booted to outtakes.

13) What Have I Done, Anna Ternheim
I hope you feel the way I do
I hope you give yourself up too
I'm damned to feel the way I do
What have I done
To fall so hard
For you

Just as you can't convince me people weren't gossiping, so you also cannot convince me that one or the other didn't think this was a bad idea at some point.

14) Everything, Michael Bublé
And you play it coy but it's kinda cute.
Ah, when you smile at me you know exactly what you do.
Baby don't pretend that you don't know it's true.
'cause you can see it when I look at you.
And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times
It's you, it's you, you make me sing.
You're every line, you're every word, you're everything.

But how can you let go of something that feels like this?

15) Hands Open, Snow Patrol
It's not as easy as willing it all to be right
Gotta be more than hoping it's right
I wanna hear you laugh like you really mean it
Collapse into me, tired with joy

It's not easy, it's never easy, because Bill and Laura are not easy people. But they make it work.

16) I Will Always Return, Bryan Adams
Now I know it's true
My every road leads to you
And in the hour of darkness, darlin'
Your light gets me through

You know how they sort of circle around each other? The way they fight and make up and get awkward and then suddenly they're best friends? And then somebody makes an unfortunate remark or votes not guilty or incites insurrection, but they always get over it again? Yeah, it's like that.

17) Falling Slowly, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

All this dancing around the bush does make for a slow and frustrating process. But they got there in the end.

18) Lucky, Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat
Lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
They don't know how long it takes
Waiting for a love like this...
I'll wait for you, I promise you, I will

This goes back to that strange line of hope that underpins everything they do. I know, BSG is a pretty dark show, and this is one of the most heartbreaking OTPs I've ever shipped. But think about it. The world ends, you're dying of breast cancer or at the tail-end of a faltering career, most people are angry with you, and you're absolutely alone... except for that other person in your lair of command solitude with you, and that other person happens to be the most perfect person you could ever imagine for yourself. That's hope.

19) When You Say Nothing At All, Alison Krauss and Union Station
The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me whenever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

I feel like their whole relationship is composed of silence and things they don't say. Which is why it's such a big honkin' deal when Laura actually says "I love you." They say so much in absolute silence, that the words almost make it too real.
Also because they tend to start arguing when they talk too much. Yeah.

20) Roslin and Adama, Bear McCreary
[instrumental]
I feel like it's obligatory to put this on every Roslin/Adama soundtrack ever. Also, I happen to think it's the most beautiful piece of music I've heard, because Bear McCreary is a Jedi Master, and the perfect capstone to this mix.

BONUS BILLY AND ROSLIN SONG
Because I love Billy, I love Billy thiiiiiiis much, Billy never should have died, and he was so adorable with Roslin, who was totally his adoptive mother.
All You Wanted, Michelle Branch

And that is the end of this epic, epic fanmix. *collapses*
