I think Cristina said it best:

First, Gabriel wanted a baby. Then, Rachel didn't want a baby. Third, their mothers really wanted them to have a baby. FOURTHLY, Rachel ran away to Ibiza, she was so mad that he told her he loved her (I know, right?). FIFTH!! She came back, he apologized (not for the loving her part), and promised that they didn't have to have more children.
