A day at the aquarium [Mar. 15th, 2010|12:35 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
After the stuff with Chthulu and the disaster that was her birthday, doing something as normal as going to work was a nice change of pace. Cait had missed working and had missed the animals at the aquarium. Living with the Titans at the tower helped keep costs down and Cait' small paycheck went a lot farther these days.

Cait was smiling as she walked through the aquarium. After work she was planning on going down to the bay to check on Hope. Cait was thrilled there was a pink dolphin in her backyard. She said hi to Hope and the pod every morning before work and every evening after work. Hope was creating quite a stir with the residents of San Francisco.

The recent troubles in the area had drawn Josh in to the San Francisco area rather quickly. He figured his abilities might come in handy in an area that had been through so much trouble. He realized a bit too late that he didn't know the area well and had no idea where he could find a hospital to sneak about in.

Instead, he made his way to the aquarium since he'd heard some excited people talking about it on the streets. He ended up stopped by a tank containing local aquatic life and enjoyed watching the fish swim about. "Lucky little guys," he murmured in an amused tone. "Wonder if anyone around here could use some of my help," he continued to talk to himself. He wasn't paying too much attention to what was around him, confident he wouldn't come under sudden attack while there. And if security asked him to leave, he'd just leave. No reason to fight.

Cait wasn't watching where she was going. Her mind was a million miles away. She turned a corner and ran right into someone.

Josh let out a surprised little noise as someone suddenly walked into him. He stumbled slightly to the side but kept from falling over. Quickly he turned to see who it was that collided with him and put on a smile.

"Hey, sorry about that. Are you okay?" he asked, hoping he wasn't about to get yelled at.

"Oh my gods! I'm so sorry!" Cait apologized profusely. "I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."

Josh blinked a few times and then chuckled. He wasn't expecting apologies but he wasn't going to complain about it. "No, it's alright. Totally my fault there. I should've been paying more attention instead of just staring at the fish," he said.

The young man paused as his powers sensed something a bit off about the girl before him. He couldn't figure out what, but she was different than the other people in the aquarium. The healer pondered it a moment but pushed the thoughts aside. Not like he hadn't sensed odd or unusual people before.

"It was my fault. My head was in the water," she said with a smile. She looked at the tank. "Ah yes. I can see why. They are rather beautiful, aren't they? Most of these guys come from a place off the shores of Australia."

"In the water? Unusual place to put one's head while walking around," Josh chuckled. His attention turned to the tank as well. "Yeah. They're some cool fish. Never seen any like them before," he said. "Australia? Really? Huh," he let out a thoughtful noise. "I wonder if they realize they're so far from their natural home..." he trailed off. There was a pause. "Oh. I'm sorry. I'm Josh, nice to meet ya," he said and offered a hand.

"Sorry. In the clouds." She got confused with surface idioms on occasion.

"They do," she answered before she thought about what she was saying. She offered him a smile and took the offered hand. "Cait Curry. Nice to meet you."

Joshua laughed a little again. "That's not a much better place to put it," he said, in a rather good mood.

"They do?" he asked. The healer blinked and tilted his head to the side. "Huh. How?"

"They don't now exactly how far they are away from their natural habitat, only that they're very far away. Exact distance is a hard concept to explain and their attention span isn't that long."

Josh thought about it for a moment and then nodded. That made sense. "Well, I'm sure that as long as they're happy here it doesn't matter how far they are from it," he mused. "Though I'm not entirely sure how one would tell if a fish was happy or not."

Cait smiled. "I generally just ask them. They miss the open water, but they don't miss the predators."

"Well I wouldn't miss something big and fangy that was trying to eat me all the time either," Josh replied. He started to laugh but paused. "Wait. You ask them? And...they talk back?"

Cait nodded. "I do. You could say I have a way with marine life."

Josh blinked a few times. He took a moment to make sure he hadn't stepped into some hidden camera reality show before his attention returned to Cait. "So you talk to fish. Well if that's the case then having your head in the water makes more sense than having it in the clouds," he concluded with a nod.

"Yes. Surface idioms confuse me at times." She smiled. "I'm an Atlantean."

Josh was a little surprised at how Cait just admitted that. He stared for a moment then shrugged. "Well that would certainly explain why you're registering so differently than the rest of the people here," he said with a smile.

Cait never hid who she was. Well she never hid the fact that she was an Atlantean. She did hide the fact that she was an Atlantean princess. That just complicated things.

"Registering? How so?"

Josh frowned a moment. "Never actually had to explain this to anyone before," he remarked. "Well...I can sorta sense people. All living things really. And what they are. You don't register as human," he tried to explain. "Just one of the powers I have."

Cait tilted her head. "What do you have to make up for? What happened?"

Josh looked down and smiled sadly. "Both my parents well..." he shrugged. "Murderers. Mom was normal but she killed a lot of people. And my dad...well. He was responsible for much more until he went up against the Flash."

"Naw, it's alright. I'm rather enjoying actually talking to someone," Josh replied as he looked back up at Cait. "First conversation I've had in weeks."

"You do?" the healer was curious now.

"See ya," Josh offered. The healer watched Cait go for a moment before he turned back to the tank. "See you guys later too," he said to the fish. He then laughed and started for the exit. "Good day so far..."
