New Year's Eve Masquerade! For Tuesday

Octavius believed hiring someone to organise an event for him meant they would actually organise an event for him. Unfortunately, that notion proved to be a false one when the organiser left him high and dry in the middle of the month, but Octavius persevered. With the help of himself, Mira, occasionally Lottie Sweeting, and an army of lackeys, the night of the masquerade had come together as beautifully as possible.

Lottie had, for once, actually done her job, and at either entrance of the grand foyer were attendants handing out beautifully crafted half-masks to party-goers, and collecting them as people left. The ballroom was majestic and shimmering, the music was softly thrumming, the drinks were pouring, and the mood was infectious. All in all, Octavius thought, it was a satisfactory night to end a rather satisfactory year. After the chaos and excitement that had chased him all throughout 1983, he was rather happy to have had a (comparably) quiet year.

"Can you make sure Miss Warbeck is ready to begin?" he murmured to an attendant nearby who then scurried off. The Wizarding Wireless Network had, after all, promised a wonderful surprise at midnight! Octavius needed to ensure everything went perfectly.

The flash of a nearby photographer made Octavius scowl, annoyed was he at even the few press witches and wizards who had paid handsomely to be at the charity event tonight. The publicity was good, no one could deny that, and the masks concealed everyone's identity at least marginally so there was no grievous intrusion on privacy, but that didn't mean Octavius enjoyed their presence.

He rolled up the sleeve of his dress robe to check his watch, then his eyes darted back to the stage. It was five minutes to midnight! What, for heaven's sake, was Celestina Warbeck taking so long to appear onto an already dressed stage? Shaking his head agitatedly, Octavius cut through a path through the brightly coloured bodies in the mingling crowd to check on his star performer.

OOC Read this for questions, or ask me! Fluid time, so feel free to thread before/after kisses. Again, the "compulsion" to find your kissing partner kicks in 5-10 minutes before midnight and could be anything from thinking you should walk and get some punch to being mystifyingly sexually attracted to the masked stranger at your side. HAVE FUN! GO WILD ♥ AND HAPPY NEW YEAR'S MY GORGEOUS GALS.

Bertram had been certain that his party-going days had been over when he'd had another child come into his life -- and perhaps that hadn't been so bad, because now that he actually had the time to be at the New Year's party, he was yawning so badly that he was certain he was going to fall asleep before the ball dropped. Bianca hadn't been on board with the outfit that he'd chosen, but he insisted -- it was his favorite outfit, all right, and he rarely got to wear it now that they were 'stay at home stick-in-the-muds'. She'd relented, he was sure, only because he had been on the verge of making them late.

He touched Bianca's arm lightly and murmured into her ear that he needed a pick-me-up if he was going to survive the rest of the evening, walking over to the drink trolley and asking them to make him a double espresso. He glanced up at the clock, then back in the direction that Bianca had gone -- only to be distracted by a woman between his lovely woman and himself. She was someone, he was sure, that he knew -- but something about her drew him to her side. He downed the espresso quickly and walked over to the woman, placing his hand on the curve of her hip as if he were certain that it belonged there.

"I don't know how I missed you on the way in, beautiful."

This year was ending quite splendidly! She and Ralph had both settled into their respective careers and were the most loving, doting parents on the planet! Little baby princess Victoria was the prettiest, smartest, most wonderful child on the planet, and now she was going to have a little brother or sister to join her ranks! Miranda couldn't be happier about being pregnant again. She'd always talked about having a million little Ralph-babies, and here she was, well on her way!

It was just as exciting to be one of the WWN's stars helping with hosting duty. Miranda was interviewing guests and taking questions herself, it was really a lot of fun to be a name that people recognized! A voice, even! Some of the guests knew who she was right away even with her mask on, because they recognized her character's voice! It was so exciting! JUST SO EXCITING!

Her arm had been resting on Ralph's, listening in on a conversation he was having with a fellow masked party-goer, when she began to drift away. Her fingers slid down and grazed his hand before completely leaving his side, and she moved through the crowd, stopping to think...where was he? It felt like he'd been missing for ages. Miranda had been looking toward the stage when she felt the hand on her waist and she turned, a smile slowly spreading across her face.

"You've got me now," she said lowly, pushing forward to drape her arms around his neck, this masked stranger's neck...He was everything she'd ever wanted, who was that Ralph guy, anyway?

Miranda couldn't press her lips to his fast enough.

Not entirely sure that his coffee hadn't had something else mixed in with it because of the way he was suddenly feeling giddy and light-headed, Bertram found himself firmly not caring that this was the case. So what if he had apparently had more to drink than he'd thought? Tonight was a night to relax and not think about either his children -- or his wife, apparently, because he could barely recall who he'd been looking for before catching sight of Miranda.

"Hmm," he purred quietly enough, draping his arms around her waist to whisk the woman closer to him, to press her warm, soft body against his own so that he could show her just how happy he was to see her, "well--" his suave sentence was cut off by the kiss, one that he leaned himself easily into. He began backing them toward the nearest exit carefully, not stopping until he felt a wall hit his back. If that kiss was anything to go by, he was going to need somewhere private with this bird sooner rather than later.

He broke the kiss to bring the hand that had been hovering on her hip lower, fingers light against her buttocks. "Now that I've got you, whatever should I do with you?"

She didn't get a chance to answer.

Bianca had lost Mira in the madness that was midnight, babies, and Miles Lufkin. Her eyes had set on the clock, feeling terrible that she wasn't with Bertram so close to midnight. They'd had a good year, with the house, with their jobs. Aaron was perfect, and even with the hiccup of Bertram's dad coming back into the picture...things had been good.

So imagine her surprise when she spotted her husband in his very recognizable, shiny suit, snogging a woman that was not her up against a wall. Bianca froze, trying to wrap her mind around the scene. Bertram had not given her any reason to distrust him during their few years together, but his past had not gone unforgotten. She was normally quite good at keeping her cool under pressure, her job required it, but the sight of her husband kissing another woman? Bianca unfroze and whipped out her wand.

ZAP!

Bertram was pulled by his ankles and hung up in the air (a nifty spell she had picked up from Severus back in school), the woman he was snogging dropping to the floor. Bianca stalked toward them, keeping her eyes plastered on her dangling husband's form. The other woman let out a shriek, tossing her mask away.

"What the hell is going on?!" she screamed, and Bianca recognized her from Hogwarts, a Gryffindor in Bertram's year. That made her fume even more, and the glare she sent Miranda caused the other woman to scurry away. Bianca turned back to Bertram, feeling as if she was ready to fling him across the room.

"Happy New Year, Bertram," she said, heart ready to burst out of her chest.

The force of the spell yanking him up by his ankles was more than enough to throw the mask off of his face. Hopefully Bianca could see the look of shock on his face not only at being upside-down but because his mouth tasted distinctly not like his own or his wife's, and he -- oh, hell. He ignored the fact that his shirt was falling very untidily down on his face, trying to relax into the spell. That was supposed to make it hurt less, right?

...apparently not, because relaxing just made him feel like he was going to fall even more. Instead, he opted to try and cover simultaneously both his face and his genitals, in case Bianca was planning to take a strike at either of them any time soon.

"Bianca!" Okay, now was definitely the time to prove that he could be cunning. Think, Bertram. He'd never been attracted to Miranda, really, she'd seen him naked already, so what had been the appeal? He looked around the room at the other 'happy' couples, some of whom had turned to stare at him -- and their masks.

"Oi! The masks!" And that was about all he felt safe saying, at least until Bianca had (hopefully) put him down.

Red, she was seeing---"The masks?

Bianca blanched, waving her free hand around while her wand stayed steady. "What, did you confuse her for me? Can't tell your own wife that you saw get dressed in this glittery getup before we left for this party?"

The noise of the crowd grew louder as the official countdown to midnight began. Bianca looked around, completely confused as to what had everyone so much more riled up than a normal New Year's celebration would. And then---she spotted a brawl. More than one! What was happening? She couldn't ignore the fight, she was always a hitwizard, but..

Frowning, Bianca flicked her wrist and flipped Bertram upright to drop him back down to the ground. Part of her wanted to stick his feet to the ground and let him stand there and wait for her to come back (which, at this rate, might not be until 1986). She stepped forward, wand still at the ready.

"What the hell was that, Bertram Pascal Aubrey?" she seethed, throwing his middle name in there for an extra verbal punch,

"A spell! It was a spell!" He was suddenly and completely convinced of that, because -- okay, how did he explain this when his wife hadn't been wearing one of the masks?

It struck him rather suddenly, though, that it wasn't really an excuse. How often in the past had he used 'I wasn't in control of my actions' as an excuse with exes, knowing full well it was a lie? She had no reason to believe him about saying that.

He grunted as he was dropped, dusting himself off and slumping his shoulders again.

"I'm sorry." That was it, that was all he was going to say about it.

"I'll just -- go home, take care of the kids. Or, uh, let you -- smack me around a little. One and then the other?" He looked to her hopefully, praying that he seemed as sincere as he felt.
