Rough Night
Dinah Lance hated computers. It wasn't the run-of-the-mill "gotta love technology" frustration frequently uttered by cubicle cattle and students. Dinah's hatred of computers was almost pathological. She couldn't use them, didn't own them, wasn't ever going to touch them. She was even extremely wary of the so-called smartphone that Babs had given her only relenting because Barbara had made a damn good point about visual intel. She'd hated that, too, but she took the phone. Too bad it had gotten smashed when Dinah laid down her bike in a narrow escape. Yes, computers and anything remotely like them were just bad. Which was what made the evening's patrol something of a nightmare.

The call had come across the police scanner that there was a break in at 8231 Fifth, smack in a shopping district. Realizing that she was closer than the fuzz, she sped there on her bike and went right about going after the crooks. It was only as she got into the store room that she realized she had responded to a break in at the Apple Store.

The would-be thieves suffered for that.

Back home, Dinah was still full of aggression and irritation. She headed straight for the gym, relieved that Ollie wasn't using it because she really didn't want to have to deal with him taunting her about her dislike of technology. Dinah started to punch and kick at the bag, muttering everything she hated about stupid computes.

She had, however, kind of enjoyed hitting the one guy with a stolen iPad. That had been fun.

Roy stopped in to talk to Ollie, wanting to find out when he could schedule some time with Lian. Lian loved Ollie and Dinah like crazy.and talked about them the whole time they were on vacation.

He headed toward the gym, figuring he'd find the two of them training (and God he hoped that was all). When he found Dinah at least, he smiled.

"Hey, look who the cat dragged in." Roy called out, smiling. He was very fond of Dinah; she was a good friend and a surrrogate mother of sorts, having saved him from one of the worst periods in his life along with Hal Jordan. Without them, Roy wouldn't be here now to raise his little girl.

He couldn't thank her enough.

"Don't tell me. Ollie forgot your anniversary again." he jokes, stepping behind the bag to hold it for her.

	Dinah snorted and delivered another kick to the bag. "If he did that I'd just rip out his beard. He's aware this isn't an idle threat." 	Roy blinks for a moment...then laughs. Loudly. He tries to speak several times, but can't, due to laughter. He knows how much Dinah hates computers, so the Apple Store robbery must have been a special kind of hell for her. Once he stops laughing (mostly), he looks at her. 	Dinah did not like being laughed at and her ire was already up from having had to be in the damn Apple Store so when Roy started howling with laughter, it didn't really help the situation. So she punched him in the arm. "Smashed an iPad on some jerk's face. That was fun. Also found out what happens when I scream in an electronics store." (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Lian is in school. I have to pick her up in a few hours. She's great, though. She talked about you and Ollie the whole time we were away." he says.

"I'm good, too. Thinking about starting up my own investigation/protection firm, but I've got to find a building to work out of. I also need to take out a loan...

and decide if Lian and I are staying in Star City." he says.

"Bank, Dinah. I'm not asking for money." Roy says, letting go of the bag.

"I've got a general idea for my business plan, but I want to make sure that whatever I do, it still lets me put Lian first. Her mother's already ducked out on her for a million reasons that I can't fix. I've really worked to be someone that she knows she can count on.

I don't want any job, in or out of costume, to negate that." he tells her.

"Dinah, you're awesome for wanting to help. You are. But I can't teach Lian about being independent and making her own way if I take hand-outs. Besides, I /need/ to do this, not just for her or me, but to prove to Ollie that I can do it, too." Roy says.

"I didn't know you and Ollie were talkin' about kids at all. I hear he's got a new partner. You know anything about that?" Roy asks. He heard there's someone calling themselves Speedy these days, but he hasn't met said sidekick.

If Ollie trusted someone enough to bring them into the fold, there's isn't anything Roy can say about that. But he does want to make sure that this person is a good match for Ollie.

"Ollie wants kids, I think it's not the best idea. That's the extent of the conversation, Roy. Right now I just can't see it so selfishly I want you and Lian to stay right here just so it takes the heat off of me." She grinned. "But I get it. The money is still yours for the asking, though."

Dinah untaped her hands.

"I actually haven't been around much recently. There was some stuff out of town I had to deal with with the ladies. What I do know is she's a girl."

Dinah wasn't certain quite how she felt about that.

	"A girl? Hm." is Roy's reply. The idea of Speedy being a girl will take some getting used to for Roy. Now he's going to have to make it a goal to meet this person and check her out. "Wow. Okay, I'll just end my line of questions right there." Roy says.

"You should let me know when you're free and I'll bring Lian by to see you. She likes hanging out in the flower shop with you. She also said you two were going to have a 'Girls-Only Sleepover' and that no boys are allowed. Not even Dads.

She didn't look all that sad when she said it." Roy says. "Don't go teachin' my kid how to sass me, now."

"You can bring her by tomorrow if you want. I could use an assistant and she's absolutely right about the sleepover. I'll have you know, Roy, the goings-on of Girls Only Sleepover Night are confidential. The lessons gleaned from it are only the begining." Dinah playfully stuck her tongue out at Roy. "And there will be lots of sugar involved."

She laughed at that. That right there was the fun of other people's children.

"Things are fine, Roy," she said after a moment. "Honest."

"Those are my biggest concerns outside of taking care of Lian. Oh, and learning to field her questions about Jade. It's hard to tell an eight year-old that her mother is an international assassin-for-hire, which is why she can't be around for holidays or even at all." Roy says, looking down at the floor.

"Like I said, I plan to be someone Lian can always count on, but I can't hide the truth about Jade from her forever. She'll find out someway or other, so I'll just tell her when she's older and let her make her own choices on how to feel." he says.
